Subject: [ ] Dr. Partington Early Registration is APRIL 14!

Dr. Partington is coming to Dayton to do a workshop on problem behavior on Sat.

May 12. although this workshop is in jeopardy of being cancelled as there are

only a handful of people registered. I have to have enough people by Sat. April

14 to know whether the workshop will be held or not. If you are interested,

please send in your registration ASAP as Sat. April 14 is the early registration

deadline. (You may be able to register after that date although the fee goes

up.) If you are interested in more information, please feel free to contact me.

Topic: Understanding and Changing Challenging Behaviors for Young Children

with Autism: Practical advice for parents and professionals

Specific Objectives:

¡¤ Participants will be able to identify the basic behavioral principles

used to analyze both appropriate and undesired behavior.

¡¤ Participants will learn how to increase appropriate behavior by

developing positive instructional control, and teaching alternative behaviors.

¡¤ Participants will learn how to observe behavior to determine why a

behavior is or isn¡¯t occurring and its probable function(s)

¡¤ Participants will learn how to structure situations so as to encourage

desired behavior and avoid unwanted behavior

¡¤ Participants will learn how to use simple but effective data collection

procedures

Workshop Description: Parents often have concerns about how to encourage

their child to behave in an appropriate manner. Attempts to get a child with

language delays to ¡°go along with us,¡± are complicated by the fact that the

child often doesn¡¯t understand what we are trying to get them to do or not to

do. Another critical factor is the fact that many of these children are not

motivated by the typical praise and recognition that is often used to teach

typically developing children how to behave. As a result, parents and

instructors often find it a challenging task to get the child to do many of the

things we need them to do. This workshop specifically addresses practical issues

and will give methods for analyzing problem situations and developing strategies

to solve those problems.

Speaker:

Dr. Partington is a licensed psychologist and a board certified behavior

analyst (BCBA), with more than 30 years experience. He is the Director of STARS

School and Behavior Analysts, Inc., in Pleasant Hill, California. His expertise

is in teaching methodology used in language intervention and shaping initiation

skills with children who are experiencing language delays as a result of

autism-related disorders. Dr. Partington has received awards from the Society

for the Advancement of Behavior Analysis and the Florida Association of Behavior

Analysis for his contributions to the field of behavior analysis. Dr. Partington

has published several papers on teaching strategies for children with

disabilities, has co-authored with Dr. Mark L. Sundberg the book, Teaching

Language to Children with Autism or Other Developmental Disabilities and The

Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills (The ABLLS): An Assessment,

Curriculum Guide, and Skills Tracking System for Children

with Autism or Other Developmental Disabilities, and has produced an

instructional video, Teaching Verbal Behavior: An Introduction to Parents

Teaching Language.
