Guest guest
When eating out you need to be exact when ordering your food for instance at Dennys you could have ordered egg whites or eggbeaters cooked without butter or oils. Multi grain bread is better than the white bread and some BFLifers have made the choice to eat multigrain bread over whole wheat [it's a personal choice that if you can live with than it is ok]request it dry meaning no butter or jelly on it. You could have requested a piece of fresh fruit as well for a carb choice. Most places serving breakfast will offer fruit on the menu. With salads ask for the dressing on the side so you can regulate the amount poured onto your salad or you can bring your own salad dressing in a little tupperware container [they have ones called " little midgets " which hold a few tablespoons worth of whatever you want to put in it]. Always order foods without sauces or gravies [these usually contain lots of saturated fats]. Order baked, poached, or grilled vs fried. If you order a baked potato ask for the fixings to be on the side and not on the potato itself then eat it plain. If ordering steak than get the top sirloin vs the rib eye or T- bone and ask for doggie bag when you order it so you can put the extras of the meal in there right away so you only eat your portion size of the meal. Request that they do not bring out the bread and butter or if at a Mexican restraunt chips and salsa[that is the norm at most restraunts] this way you won't be tempted to nibble while you wait for your food. Stick to only drinking water at the restraunts as well cause sodas have cals and carbs in them than can add up quickly. Same with alcohol it is best to avoid for the most part. I hope this helps~ Joann http://www.mrsbishwitskitchen.com
Guest guest
You can cook egg whites into your oatmeal. If you beat them well and then " temper " them, they mix in pretty well and you end up with a very creamy high-volume oatmeal. Tempering means that you mix a small amount of the hot oatmeal into the eggs before adding them to the oatmeal. This keeps them from scrambling. Just make sure you use a little more water than usual. Vanilla and brown sugar sweet and low complete the meal for me! Lynda

Guest guest
> Really, if I eat breakfast my stomach growls (really loudly too lol) all day long. Sometimes that happens to me, but only on days when I *don't* have my oatmeal but eat either eggs or a cream cheese & jelly sandwich. Oatmeal can hold me 4-6 hours if it has to, but after eggs, it's like I never ate anything at all, and I have 2-3 slices of ww toast and butter with them! Guest guest
Hi Connie, I have a friend who is on Atkins and she buys the Atkins muffins, or makes them and sometimes she has those for breakfast. Sometimes she just has a protein bar or cottage cheese, or you could have your bacon or canadian bacon with a low carb bread and maybe some cheese. You could even have leftovers from last nights meal or lunch. I think the whole thing is that as long as it is good quality protein it really doesn't matter. Hope this helps. I will see her tomorrow and will ask her some some other things that might help you. Love, Hi Everybody, Has anyone been on the South Beach diet or Atkins? They both have eggs for breakfast everyday and it gives me heartburn....I can have no carbohydrates so I am not sure what my options are. If anyone else has had this dilemma please let me know what you had instead of the eggs and Canadian bacon> Thanks Connie :-)

Maybe you could have a piece of chicken and some low carb veggies or a tuna sandwich on low carb bread (or just on lettuce ....) breakfast doesn't have to just consist of breakfast foods! Guest guest
Hi Connie, I think it's ok to have your oatmeal or bran cereal in the morning and stick stringent to the low carbs the rest of the day. You're cutting out alot of carbs, so you're still going to lose weight, maybe not 6 lbs. a week... which is an unhealthy weekly loss anyway. Guest guest
I only have a few minutes on line but I wanted to tell you that I have read several articles that say that oatmeal can actually help you lose weight because it is so filling and also because of the high fiber. I really liked the message that said think outside the box. I sometimes eat things for breakfast that most would not consider breakfast foods. I have heard a lot of good things about the South Beach Diet so I bought the book so I could give you educated information about it. It is more like what I believe in which is a healthy, non deprivation eating plan beyond the first two weeks so I like that. I love potatoes and yams so that would be the problem for me. The main thing to remember is that whatever eating plan you try you should enjoy it or you won't stick with it. Guest guest
Connie, I am on a low carb but a little different from Atkins and I eat pure whole grains along with lots of vegies and certain fruits. I can't do Atkins because he uses too much soy and with hypothyroidism soy is out. I make some of my muffins without any flour except wheat bran. They are alot smaller and are really fibrous but I smear them with coconut oil and pure peanut butter and I really like them. I would be happy to share the recipe with you if you are interested. You can email me privately if you want. I have even made them and added bacon and grated cheese. Love, My problem is I LIKE my oatmeal or Bran....but can I still have it and lose weight? Guest guest
Hi Connie, Atkins made me weak. I have to have my carbs, but in a healthy form. I think you can still do a form of Atkins and use pure wheat flour that has not been enriched. As long as it says 100 % whole wheat and is not enriched, you can get away with it. Just have it maybe at one meal and then go your low carb the rest of the day with your lean meats and vegies. I agree with Liz, go ahead and have the bran cereal or oatmeal just make sure the bran has no hidden sugar. I am really cautious about eating anything with hydrogenated oils aloso. I try to remind myself if God put it on the earth, He intended for us to eat it. He gave us cows for the milk, butter, meat and cream, but I haven't found any cows yet that produce hydrogenated oils so I threw away all my margarine, and all my vegetabele oils with the exception of pure virgin cold pressed Olive oil and coconut oil. I have studied and re-studied all the low carbs and I am now doing my own version and am losing slowly, but I know this way I will keep it off. Good luck, and let me know if I can help you in any way. I have some pretty good healthy low carb recipes that I have tried off and on so as not to get too bored. Guest guest
Hi !! What a good point!! God did intend us to eat food in its' natural state. I have been reading a book by Dr. Bruce Fife called The Healing Miracle Of Coconut Oil and there is stuff in there that just plain scares me. According to Dr Fife, vegetable oils are very unhealthy for us because they become rancid very quickly. Although, the oil does not taste or look rancid, it is and very dangerous to our health. They is expecially frightening because we live in a fast food culture and fast food is cooked in veg oil. I have been using coconut oil because I too have difficulty with my thyroid. I have also been startled to read that soy and other grain products depress thyroid function. I have been using the coconut oil for about 2 weeks now and hope to see some improvement soon. Thanks and what a good point. Wayoata Re: Breakfast Hi Connie, I think it's ok to have your oatmeal or bran cereal in the morning and stick stringent to the low carbs the rest of the day. Guest guest
gee -- I realized that vegetable oils could go rancid (I actually just learned this) but I didn't realize that they could go back without detecting in in taste or smell.... eeksss... could that possibly explain why so very often I feel sick after eating at fast food places? What a scary thought. Wayoata, I know there has been discussion recently about coconut oil, can you perhaps tell me what the benefits of using coconut oil are compared to other oils such as sunflower and canola (what I currently use along with olive oil)? I always thought that coconut oil was bad for us... I guess I should have been following the thread a little more carefully. So -- now that I'm scared to death to eat anything cooked in oil (and that is probably a good thing!) -- can you guys enlighten me? Oh, I also just read a very moving article by Gerald Kein talking about the dangers of sugar... it led me to go and buy a couple books today on that topic. I think what I've been reading about that is enough to have me give up all sugar products as well (something I've been working towards anyway -- if only in my mind!). I think pretty soon I'll be down to nuts, berries, veggies, and chicken! If that doesn't help me to lose some pounds I don't know what will! Can't wait to hear about this. Guest guest
Hey Wayota, I just finished that some book. I am now reading his other book, " Eat Fat Look Thin " which is an extension of The other one and goes into the coconut diet. I'm like you, after reading that book, out went all my oils and margarines!!! Actually, I stopped eating margarine and any oils except olive a long time ago. But after reading his book, it scard me half to death. I no longer eat anything out of a box or can unless it says no sugar and no hydrogenatd oils. Wasn't that something about the soy? Who would have thought. That's one reason I could never eat any of the Atkins products. They are all made with soy. The thing that shocked me though was that raw cruciferus vegetables also suppress the thyroid and all broccoli, cabbage, etc should be cooked and only rarely eaten raw. I'm sure glad to have another believer in the coconut oil. I have been on it for a little over a month and I am amazed at all the benefits of it. Take care, Love, Subject: Re: Breakfast Hi !! Guest guest
Thank You , that is exactly what it did to me, our bodies was saying " EXCUSE ME! " . So I am doing my own thing too. It is more like what I believe in which is a healthy, non deprivation eating plan beyond the first two weeks so I like that. I love potatoes and yams so that would be the problem for me. The main thing to remember is that whatever eating plan you try you should enjoy it or you won't stick with it. Love to all, Rashelle Re: Breakfast Hi Connie, I have a friend who is on Atkins and she buys the Atkins muffins, or makes them and sometimes she has those for breakfast.
Guest guest
Amen!!! Love, Re: Breakfast Hi Connie, I think it's ok to have your oatmeal or bran cereal in the morning and stick stringent to the low carbs the rest of the day. You're cutting out alot of carbs, so you're still going to lose weight, maybe not 6 lbs. a week... which is an unhealthy weekly loss anyway. And eggs do give me heartburn! I was on this last week for 5 days and lost 6 pounds but I was exhausted and was not having fun, but the concept makes sense so I thought I would try it again, but the problem is breakfast!!!! All other meals are ok, also I am combining it with South Beach--about the same as Atkins. :-) PS on the first two weeks NO breads at all!!
