I do Jena, I do. And for a short period we do get some, then it's back to

either none or busy work, until I light a fire under their butts again.

sigh. one does get sick of having to poke and prod all the time.

Trish, That is so good. gets 5 spelling words

each week now. I think it has helped him to read

better. I help him to learn them by having him write

them on a large chalk board once or twice a week.

Other days he writes them on a paper like the teacher

wants so he practices his hand writing. I believe

spelling words have been good for . He learns them

for the test. We have not seen him use them on his own

because he only copy/writes at this point. But for the

test they give it to him like any other child and he

has to remember them. Take care enjoy the vacation.

I agree about the importance of spelling. Since learned to read

phonetically, spelling was very easy for him. Of course there are words that

don't fit the phonics but it's much easier to learn them than to have to

sight everything. It helps with speech too as if either of us is having

trouble understanding something we can spell it.

He didn't usually have assigned homework but I always had things to work

on with him. He had a full day of school, plus at least an hour and a half

in the car so it made a long day. And since I'd had twice that time in the

car I was tired too. But I reenforced anything he was having trouble with.

Had to laugh last night, as usual I told our rabbit, " This is the last

time I'm sweeping tonight, if you make any more mess you'll have to sweep it

up yourself. " always says , " He can't do that. " and last night he

added " He's not human like you are. " I guess it's an honor, at least he

considers me human, altho there are times when I hate to admit it. The last

part of this routine is, " Well, then he'd better not make any more mess. "

And that always breaks up. Which of course is why I do it.

Incidentally, we don't have any carpet, makes it easier for to

get around, so it's not so bad cleaning up after the rabbit. This is the

only one I've ever had that wasn't at least paper trained, and usually litter

box trained. He's a sweet guy tho. Jessie

I have 3 or 4 spelling groups each year, depending on the range in my class.

I've found the following works very well for teaching spelling words with

the program I use (a no-longer available D.C. Heath spelling workbook, which

I flagrantly copy <G>). Anyway, there are 2 to 4 pages, which are to be done

independently. On Monday, we go over the words individually in class and

kids can work on pages. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights, write words 5

times each, _hopefully_ saying words as you write them. Wednesday night,

homework is using each word in a sentence. Thursday, we have a practice test

and correct sentences. Friday is the big test, turning packet in, but if you

make 100 on Thursday, you don't have to do the test or homework for Friday.

Kids get grades on test, homework, packet.

Right now, I've got a pre-primer group, a 1-2 group and a 2-3 group. This

program teaches sight words, a little phonics, some spelling rules and word

endings. And it uses several modalities to do it.

Parents, insist on homework--meaningful homework--for your kids. Special

needs kids need homework to reinforce classwork. Don't fall for that " they

work so hard in class we think they need a break at home " scam! Regular

classes get homework, so why not special ed classes? Doesn't have to be

much, but should relate to concepts in class.

Ahhh Neat Jessie :)

I think Sara would like an animal, she's leaning towards a bird. Ours died

years ago :( But the mess...... oh well any animal would fit in good with my

family. My family is the messy bunch I've ever seen.........I'm complaining

now lol

I have a question, what if our kids never phonically read, will spelling be

sight memory only? I get kind of down sometimes when I see Sara struggle with

reading, I usually brush myself off and say " she's only 9 and we have many

years to work with her " lol

I have asked for homework, they all say yes but none comes home. I'm the one

who makes worksheets, projects etc... for Sara to do here.

Tim has two spelling words at the moment, " it " and " in " . He spells them

with letter cards becoz he can't write well enuf and when he does write them

he mirror writes them backwards!!So he gets ti and ni with the t and n

backwards (he is left handed)!! but with the letter cards he can see the

spelling better. But he still gets to sit the test every friday, he just

sits and scribbles " words " while the others write their spellings. He likes

to be included in everything!!! I am really looking forward to the day tim

can actually write his own spellings or even copy stuff. he is very good

(legible anyway!) at over writing but even copying directly under a word he

writes it backwards. He gets to do sentence work with whole words and

chooses words from a selection of words what to write. He also does

worksheets of questions with two possible answers about his reading books,

he is really ejoying this at the moment.

Hi, I started Natascha on a reading program myself, yes she is 14yrs old,

but it will take a due process to get school to do it. We are using the

pro-ed program, Reading milestones,(it is not that expensive and we can buy

each book seperate). I have to say we just a few times reading the first

story and working in the workbook, (i adjusted some for Natascha) she did

wrote the word boy by herself. It will be interesting to see if she has a

hard or easy time with the new words in the book, like " branch " , or " boo " .

Natascha can recognize almost all the pre-primer and primer words if given a

choice to pick the right word between two or three words in front of her,

she misses a few, not a lot. any input to that???

It does not matter how old your child is, in my opinion, just do it!! Having

picture words in other reading material, really helped to boost her self

esteem. :) It took me a while to find the best way to present the material

to Natascha. I am still learning. If the child has difficulties

writing,(spelling) have individual letters ( i think big letters) and give

the child the letter necessary for the word.

I insist on homework. The teacher doesn't always comply, so I make

something up that goes along with what they are teaching. Since I help

write most of his IEP goals, I know what to work on. He does his spelling

words, math, road signs, and just recently had to choose items from a menu,

add up the cost and see if he had enough money to cover what he wanted.

This was an excellent thing that the sub found for him. I wish she wouldn't

leave:(( His regular teacher isn't as demanding. She's too nice.

responds to strict. Well, that's another topic altogether.

That is why I like Pat Oelwein's methods for teaching reading and spelling.

She begins with things that are meaningful to the child. It and in have

very little meaning for Tim. He may have a visual processing problem, but

this could also explain things. Pat's book explains her method. She has

the kids write books about themselves and their familes. She begins with

picture of family and their names in words. She also uses pets, etc. She

adds connecting words later.

I'm with you Rick, anything that exposes kids to " words " is a good

thing....besides, I enjoy a good " word search " occasionally, and I'm 40!

All of our kids are different. We need to have understanding for the

parents whose kids have different achievements than our kids. Still

................

Jan is her own person. Some time ago on one of the lists came up a

request for an email buddy. The request was for another young adult

Jan's age and I managed to get the two of them together. Well, it is

almost comedy .. or is it tragedy .. to watch. The other young adult

is quite coherent and focused in her emails. Jan reads them and goes

almost into a rage about how words are spelled .. or miss spelled. She

sees the spelling and not the message. Now, Jan isn't perfect, but her

spelling is a lot better, for whatever reasons.

Jan has and still wants to write her friend back trying to teach her

about spelling. I've even pointed out Jan's spelling mistakes in what

she was writing back, minor though they were. Jan can't write back a

coherent story about her life and family because she's focused on this

one issue. Jan also is focused on the problem of having DS and

seemingly everyone in the world trying to be a

helper/counsellor/parent/etc .. instead of a peer and friend. That is

why she values her independence so much. Somehow, that doesn't transfer

to her not being a counsellor to a peer.

Maybe this summer I can finally have the two of them meet face to face.

It is interesting. Our kids have different achievements. I think that

is better than my previous view that they were just different.

Hugggggs to them all.

Caty took a liking to word searches a few years ago and man, has it helped her

spelling. Also writing down her assignments in her assignment book and she

loves calendars so writing down future events on it has helped her too.

Could he do his typing on some kind of word prediction program? Or would that

make it too easy?

Spell check!

English is an impossible language when it comes to spelling. I rely heavily

on spell check. No shame in it, as far as I'm concerned.

Yes, I used to do that with spelling words or christmas words at christmas, etc.

I just thought of something else....someone told me that they put their tv

settings to use the closed captioning. You still hear the dialog, but the words

are at the bottom of the screen. Something to think about.

Me too Granny! A fun game that we just found is bananagrams. Kind of like

scrabble, but less intense and lots more fun for the whole family. I have

also been playing with a spelling site called spellingcity.com. Nolan's 2nd

grade teacher uses it and it is allot of fun. You can enter your own

spelling lists then your kids can choose to play a bunch of different games.

There is even an option that you can have spellingcity do the testing. I

think it is pretty cool.
