Autism Awareness Rally Planned at Ohio Statehouse

April 19 Event is 4th Annual Rally

The federal Centers for Disease Control now report that the incidence of autism in the United States is 1 in 150 children.

Ohio individuals with autism, activists, families, and state legislators will gather for the fourth annual statewide Autism Awareness Rally at the Ohio Statehouse in April, which has been declared by Governor Ted Strickland as Autism Awareness Month in Ohio.

Rally participants will be calling for immediate legislative action to respond to this growing health crisis, including a statewide early screening program.

The Rally, which is co-sponsored by the Autism Society of America – Central Ohio Chapter and the Autism Society of Ohio, will take place on the South Lawn of the Statehouse at 11 a.m. on April 19, 2007.

The following speakers will be featured at the Rally:

Ø State Representative Bacon (R - 21, Columbus)

Ø State Senator (D - 30, St. Clairsville)

Ø State Representative Jon (R - 2, Delaware)

Ø State Representative Ken Carano (D - 59, Youngstown)

Ø Dr. Becky on - Oakstone Academy in Columbus, Founder, with several students

Ø Barron - Adult with Autism and national author from Boardman, Ohio

Ø Sinclair, Aletta Sinoff, Raman Belinson - Cleveland Clinic, Center for Autism

Ø Mrs. Georgia Backus - The Rich Center at Youngstown State University, Program Director

Ø Barb Yavorcik - President of Autism Society of Ohio, Parent

Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and is the result of a neurological disorder that affects the normal functioning of the brain, impacting development in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. Both children and adults with autism typically show difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities.
