Should a child become lost or separated from caregivers, participating jurisdictions can search the database by inputting characteristics to match the child with their family. Planning for a Spectacular Summer & Transition Strategies for Next Year’s Classroom by educational consultants Wetherbee and of HOPE Mentoring When finishing the school year and planning a child’s summer schedule, creativity, organizational skills, financial resources and level-headedness are must-haves. When a child has special needs, the planning can multiply exponentially. Join Educational Consultants and Wetherbee as they make this process more manageable in a “make-it-and-take-it†workshop. Participants will leave with a checklist for finishing the school year, ideas for a successful and enjoyable summer, and a plan for transitioning to school in September. WHOLE CHILD & FAMILY WELLNESS CENTER Summer 2007 Playful Kids Description: Playful Kids is an activity-based group that teaches children how to socially interact with each other in a non-threatening environment. The group may be facilitated by either our clinical counselor, a speech pathologist or an occupational therapist. Each session the participants will learn a new skill that is built upon each week. Each child will be assessed for individual goals. Playful Kids has three levels: Level One is designed for children with limited communication and play skills. In this group, the emphasis is on your child’s accepting and tolerating friends in his/her environment, parallel play, trading objects and following routines. Level Two is designed for children who enjoy other children in their environment but have difficulty initiating play, sharing and communicating with friends. Level Three is for children who enjoy other children but have difficulty understanding other people’s emotions and non-verbal body language. At this level, cooperative play is encouraged and supported. Parent Education/Support: Parents will receive weekly hand outs on the topics covered. These hand out will include strategies to use at home. Playful Kids will be offered three days per week this summer. Participants may participate in one, two or three days. Group space is limited to 6 six participants per group and we must have three participants to run a group. When signing up please specify which day and group level. Dates: June 12 – August 14 the group meets W, Th, F Times: Level One 9:00 A.M., Level Two: 10:30 A.M. and Level Three: 1:00 P.M. The group lasts one hour. Cost: One day for eight weeks is $250. Two days for eight weeks is $480. Three days for eight weeks is $720. Payment is due in full by June 5 for groups. (The groups work out to $31.25 for one hour of therapy!) WHOLE CHILD & FAMILY WELLNESS CENTER The Ready Group Description: An occupational therapy group that meets once per week for 8 weeks to improve children’s self-regulation/coping skills with the use of the Alert Program for Self-Regulation. The targeted children would be students with coping skills difficulties who are between the ages of 8 and 10. The group would be run by two occupational therapy staff members who have experience with utilizing the Alert Program. Dates: June 5, 12, 19, 26, July 2, 9, and 16. Times: 10:00 A.M. Cost: $240 for the eight -week session. Half of the payment is due at the time of registration and the second half of the payment is due on the first meeting date. Bike Clinic An occupational therapy and physical therapy program to promote the gross motor skills necessary for bike riding. The Bike Clinic would be designed to provide tips and strategies for teaching parents how to help their children learn to ride a bicycle. The groups are offered at two different levels – beginning and intermediate. The beginning group is geared towards children who are having balance difficulties and coordination difficulties (children who have not yet mastered riding a bike without training wheels). The intermediate group is geared for children who are having difficulty with steering and maneuverability. Parents and children attend the group together so that parents learn the strategies with their children. The therapists provide individual instruction and would then allow for practice of the skills. Dates: Session 1 June 14, 21, 28 and July 5. Session 2 July 19, 26, August 2, 9 Times: Level One 9:00 a.m. and Level two 10:00 a.m. Cost: $80 Gymnastics Description: Your child will learn all the basics of gymnastics. From tumbling and somersaulting to full turn cartwheels. Gymnastics will teach children how to coordinate movements as well as strengthen muscles.
