Guest guest
Tamara - If your child is classified and unable to attend in-school due to illness, etc., they can qualify for bed-side instruction. I would caution though, this isn't the equivalent of what they get in school and isn't intense tutoring. My oldest with bipolar quite a few years back was placed on bedside until we could find an alternative school placement for her (unable to attend the mainstream school) and it was more like a self-study course. Tutor arrived and handed out assignments, quick few questions and she would be gone. I believe it's only an hour or so daily that is required under this. It's not a replacement for in-class schooling, but may be a temporary solution until things get better? All you basically need is a note from your physician (provided you're already working under an IEP) stating that due to her illness (OCD complications, etc) that she is unable to attend regular classes. Your CST should be able to give you info. The tutors that come are usually teachers within the district so they'd come after their regular day is over. I'm sure each school/district probably varies in their delivery of bed-side instruction though. In a message dated 9/8/2006 10:02:25 AM Central Standard Time, tamara_naranjo@... writes: Is this true? Guest guest
Hi Tamara, Yes, it can be. There is often such an option and it's usually goes under the name of homebound schooling. Kids that take this option usually have medical problems that stop them from being able to go to school and so they need a tutor to either come to the home or to the location the school has designated. The school usually will ask for some type of verification from a doctor. This homebound education can also be available for situations outside of strict medical reasons such as debilitating psychological/emotional issues, but that has to be worked out with the school and usually a parent has to really push for this type of option. This option, in my opinion, can be a valid substitute for attending school especially if it is for as temporary period of time. How is (that is your son's name, right?) doing these days? I hope he is doing ok-I know the beginning of a school year can be so stressful. Debbie Home Tutor Hi, I think I read posts here recently by mom(s) who have/had a home tutor for their child who couldn't attend school b/c of OCD. It probably was here where I read that schools are obligated to provide a home tutor for kids who can't attend school for a significant period of time b/c of illness or injury. (My memory has been terribly lately.) Is this true? Is a home tutor a valid temporary substitute for attending school for kids overwhelmed by debilitating rituals and intrusive thoughts? Guest guest
Debbie and , Thank you for clearing that up for me. It sounds like a homebound tutor wouldn't be appropriate for Chris. I think I need to hire a tutor on my own to help him with homework until he feels better and is caught up. After the p-doc appt. this afternoon, I'm hoping that eliminating the last .5 mg. of ativan and reducing or eliminating the risperdal will restore his problem solving abilities. Guest guest
Hi Tamara, If mostly you're talking about needing help with homework, I recall asking about that awhile back and several here mentioned that the high school honor's society (? I think) kids can come help out. I think it was something that helped them get credit for community service or something. I may be getting this all wrong, hopefully someone else will post more on this, but you may want to contact the high school and see if this is an option. nna. Guest guest
Hi nna Thanks for the suggestion. It would be great if one of our high schools offers that program. I'll find out. Guest guest
Hello, I'm looking to hire an additional home tutor for my son (age 3, mild to moderate autism). I'd like to find a student (SLP, OT, social work, education) who has experience with young children on the spectrum and either is trained in or willing to be trained in Floortime, RDI or Responsive Teaching. Any leads would be appreciated. You can email me off list. Thanks, Eileen Looking for earth-friendly autos? Browse Top Cars by "Green Rating" at Autos' Green Center.
