Guest guest
Archana, It is very common for 2-3 month delay in both getting an evaluation and starting the actual therapy in our area (Central Jersey). I live in Hillsborough and happen to have lucked out with a wait of a week and half for the actual speech therapy to begin. The demand for speech is so large and the therapists are few and far in between. If I hadn't gotten in with this therapist, I would've had to wait until the Fall...as for the " best " therapist, look for one that understands Apraxia and after that it really is up to you to decide if he/she is doing the best job with your child. Therapy is very specific to your child... My son Avinash,3.5yrs old(born premature at 23wks) has sever Apraxia along with difficulty in motor coordination and difficulty in chewing and feeding. He hardly speaks 2-3 words and does few signs when prompted. He is getting Speech therapy 3xwk in special school, but I think its not sufficient. Can anyone recommend the best speech therapist in Edison, n.J and is it usual waiting period of 3-4 months for evaluation by speech therapist and another 3-4months to start therapy in other areas also or its just this area where we live, Edison, nj. thanks a lot for the inspiration and great ideas Archana

Guest guest
, Does she use a combination of sensory input with the speech therapy? I know when Kiernan would have problems focusing and staying on track sometimes it help when our ST would take him in and put him on the platform swing... or she would bring the peanut ball in the room and have him bounce while working... that little extra added stimulation seemed to be just what he needed and helped a ton! Just a thought... > > Hello all .... > Our son has been going to one of the best speech therapist's (by our > own observation and other parents) in the Akron area since April. > He's made some progress, however he will have the word of the week or > month. Guest guest
Hi ! I am a speech-language pathologist and have a great deal of experience working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. I agree with . Pairing sensory/motor activities with speech/language activities can make a big difference. Based on my experiences, I would not recommend changing therapist, since you mentioned that you really like her. Your son has just developed a relationship with this SLP. Changing therapists might just set him back further. There will be ups and downs in terms of progress with any child. I would look at what might be going on with your son. Is your child being seen the consistently the same time on the same days? Does your child have sensory integration problems as well? What is going on with your child's sensory systems on those days. If a child's sensory system is on overload, they are never going to be able to focus for speech therapy. Try to figure out what might be impacting your child's therapy sessions. Hope that helps some! > > Hello all .... > Our son has been going to one of the best speech therapist's (by our > own observation and other parents) in the Akron area since April. > He's made some progress, however he will have the word of the week or > month.
