Out Run Autism 4th Annual 5K Run/ Walk

April 21, 2007

Homestead Park, Hilliard, OH

Ohio families, individuals with autism, friends, caregivers, teachers and activists will meet for the fourth annual Out Run Autism 5K Run and one mile “fun run†at Homestead Park in Hilliard, Ohio on April 21, 2007. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. and the race begins at 10:00 a.m.

New to the event this year will be a post-race party with live entertainment featuring Columbus classic rock band The Detours, as well as Colin Gawel, lead singer and guitarist of Columbus favorite Watershed. Local and national companies, including Hooters and Cheryl’s Cookies have traditionally supplied refreshments for attendees.

Out Run Autism co-founder Tamara Heydt of Grove City said, “We are very blessed to have a community of runners and walkers who turn out for this event. The walk and run provides a day for our kids to participate with a very diverse group of people who all happen to share a love of running.â€

The beneficiary of this year’s event is Central Ohio Families for Effective Autism Treatment (COFEAT www.cofeat.org). COFEAT provides information and support to help parents and primary caregivers find effective treatment for individuals with autism.

“COFEAT came into existence at the same time our son was diagnosed with autism,†said co-founder Ron Kincaid of Upper Arlington. “The support that group provided in establishing a home-based tutoring program is immeasurable. I am certain that my son’s successes in life can all be traced back to what we learned from COFEAT.â€

Autism is a complex and severe life-long developmental disability that affects a person’s ability to communicate and relate to others. It is associated with rigid routines and repetitive, self-stimulatory behaviors. Symptoms can range from very mild to very severe.

Governor Ted Strickland has declared April Autism Awareness Month in Ohio. More than 10,000 Ohio residents have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Nationally, The Centers for Disease Control report that the incidence of autism in the United States is 1 in 150 children, making it more common than pediatric cancer, diabetes and AIDS combined.

Registration is available through Premier Races at www.premierraces.com or by picking up a registration form at any local U.S. Bank branch location, The Columbus Running Co., Front Runner or Colin’s Coffee in Upper Arlington.
