We want to let you know about a Special Education Law and Advocacy Conference with Wayne Steedman, Esq. and Pat Howey on October 12-13, 2007 in Toledo, Ohio. We would also appreciate your help in passing information on about this program to others who might be interested in it.

slaw Special Education and Advocacy Conference, a slaw training program with Wayne Steedman and Pat Howey, is being brought to you by The Arc of Lucas County, Autism Society of NW Ohio, Family Information Network of NW Ohio, Lucas County Board of MR/DD, The Ability Center of Greater Toledo, Ohio Support Team, Ohio Coalition for the Education of Children with Disabilities, and the Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council.

Program Description Participants will learn about changes in IDEA 2004 including:

* New requirements for initial evaluations, reevaluations & parental consent

* New requirements for IEPs, IEP goals, IEP teams, IEP meetings

* New eligibility issues for students with specific learning disabilities

* New procedural requirements and timelines, including the Due Process Complaint Notice and Resolution (IEP) Session.

Participants will learn about requirements in No Child Left Behind including:

* Reading and research based instruction

* Highly qualified teachers

* Parental rights and options

* High stakes testing

Participants will also learn how to:

* Use tests and measurements to measure progress

* Write SMART IEPs

* Use tactics and strategies for effective advocacy

slaw programs are designed to meet the needs of parents, educators, health care providers, advocates and attorneys who represent children with disabilities regarding special education. The program is not disability specific.
