I've earned myself a reputation for being the *squeaky wheel* at Maddie's old school. But hey, I didn't care one iota. Gail, I would recommend that you go and check out this school. The only way to know what's available is to go and personally visit. I went to so many places. It took me a long time to investigate what was out there and go visit, but it was the only way I could find something that was right for Maddie. Believe me, I got MORE than discouraged. I'd heard all these fabulous things about this one autistic program and had high hopes when I visited (they are the only ones close to me who implement TEACCH). BOY, was I bummed. I remember saying to the administrator while we were checking out the classrooms that I noticed they kept the doors open....even exit doors. I wondered what they did in the case of *runners* like Maddie. She smiled and said " Oh, we have plenty of runners. That's why we have stop signs at the ends of all the corridors " . I started to laugh, but then realized she was serious. Guess who RAN out of that school.................. And once I found the right place, it was quite the battle to pull it all together. But I went into the IEP totally prepped, with good advocates, and with knowledge that no matter what, I would NOT bend. I already knew in my heart that over my dead body would I place Maddie in the program they wanted her in. They knew from the get go that we weren't budging and that we were prepared to go all the way if we had to. Honestly Gail, I really thought I'd be homeschooling Maddie too, but it wasn't what I wanted for her. We have such major social issues and had made great progress in that year with regards to classroom environment, that I really didn't want to go backwards. As Joan well knows, I am married to the most relentless person on the planet. He does NOT comprehend the word no. When we let MM know we wanted Maddie there, the admissions guy called to tell us " Sorry, but we have no openings; we are at capacity at 77 students " . Duff cajoled him, then hung up and turned to me and said... " Poor guy. Doesn't even realize that his capacity just went up to 78 " ...........LOLOL Let us know what you learn dear!!!!! Investigate investigate investigate and YELL YELL YELL!!!! And sometimes, the right thing is to homeschool. Only you know if that's a doable thing for you and Seth. But whatever, you'll do the best thing because you adore Seth and are a great mom!! Donna

I just don't know what I want for Seth. There is nothing closer than an hour away, and I don't want him spending that much time traveling every day anymore. He does that now and it leaves no time for his Dad to spend with him during the week. (he works 3-12) I don't want to tie every day up with teachers and therapists here all the time either. BUT....I know I will not put him in the classroom that they say is right for him. I have to find something that works for all of us, and I don't know if there is anything that is good for Seth, the girls, and us. I can't even find anything with each of us making concessions. The best thing for me is to have him home and do it all myself. Best for the girls is to have him in school so we can have our days for school and field trips. Best thing for Dad is to have him here with a home base program with others teaching him. Best thing for Seth is the class he is in, or one similar. (which doesn't exist) If there was even a class that I wasn't dead set against, I would do some stuff at home myself, and send him to the class for a couple of hours each morning. Just no way to please everyone. I just feel like I'm being robbed of raising my own kid, ya know? What's best for Seth isn't going to happen, so I will have to figure out what is second best, and if we can make it happen. Okay, done whining! LOL I feel better now. From what I hear, this is like a laboratory type setting that uses very strict ABA. Gail
Guest guest
There's a couple the best I've heard about was Westview off of I-10 and beltway 8. They are very selective on who they take and turn us down. There is Monarch. I don't know much about it. There is a Christian Academy in the Kingwood area and I have heard outstanding things about them. I have heard some good things about another school on I-10 and beltway something w/ a " P " -Sorry can't remember. I also heard good things about Dominque Randall's preschool ( Shape of Behavior)but I think they may be on 290 and Beltway 8. She recently announced she was doing something in the Med Center- a small grp. Maybe someone has used these facilities. Good luck Jeneane
Guest guest
The Christian Life Academy in Kingwood closed and is now Including Kids, Inc. in Humble and is an excellent school. The director is Dantzler. This is where my son attends. Dominique Randall runs The Shape of Behavior, which is now located on the north side of town. I understand she has opened another school in the DT area. Montijunas (sp?) is the Director of The Learning Repertoire in Pearland. There is another school, but I do not have the name of it at this time. The Westview school is not an ABA school, but has a good reputation. They have small classes, but do not teach one on one, hence the cost is less. It is on the west side of town, as is The Monarch school, which also has a very good reputation. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Beth, The Lab School on Reservoir Rd. is supposed to be very good. (I have heard about that from a friend who used to teach in the area.) I googled special education schools Washington D.C. and got a whole lot of information. The Lab School is also not cheap. Guest guest
In Cherokee Co there is Kalediscope and Reinforcement Unlimited. In Alpharetta there is Summit Learning Center and Lionheart School. I'm not sure that any of the ones listed are considered " private schools " other than Lionheart school. They use the DIR/Floortime approach and SRA materials. I really liked that school but our son is moderate on the spectrum and you have to be at a certain developmental level in order to be considered a fit. The other places I mentioned provide ABA/VB in center based settings and I don't think have typical peers. If your child is higher functioning there are probably a lot more private schools available to him. I posted a list of the ones listed in Atlanta Parent Magazine in their January 2007 issue. They listed public and private schools for typical and special needs kids. Good luck! Anyone know of any good ABA/VB schools in the entire state? My husband just got permission to telecommute and we are free to move anywhere. But we are looking for a school that really understands autism and how to properly use motivation and reinforcement. We are looking for 1:1 or 1:2 ratio for at least the academic parts of the day. His language and play skills at near a 2 yr old level but he can read and has many impressive scattered skills. He loves people and wants badly to interactively play but just hasn't figured it out with kids. He does great with adults that meet him where he is socially. I wouldn't rule out schools that serve other disabilities but what I have been finding locally (in metro ATL area)is that the ratios are higher 1:5-6 and instruction hasn't looked all that different than a cross disability public school class. I think ASD kids need very specific and individualized instruction from staff who are highly educated and trained in autism not just general basic training on a variety of disabilities. Anyway, any suggestions for private schools like I am looking for in the state of GA would be great. Thanks, Beverly > > Hello Group, > > We are looking for private schools for our 7yo ASD. Guest guest
I have heard that there are some excellent programs in Rome, GA and sville, GA. Northwest Georgia location. ALso ding county has an elementary school with an autism program run by teachers who specialize in autism - however at this time I can not speak of it's quality as they are going through a lot of transitions. Guest guest
Can anyone explain the process of what is or is not covered with a child on IEP (or even not) when you remove them from public to a private school setting?? ie transport, public funds, IEP service funding etc. We're looking at a private school but were told IEP services would not be funded, and the state funds still go to public school for our kids (which theoritically really angers me since it's their fault we would have to do this but just don't have it in us to fight them anymore after 6 years of doing so!!) Thanks, jackie
