Guest guest
I have to say, I'm w/ you on not voting for Autism Speaks, however my reasons are not the same. We do not do biomedical, we do not take issue w/ those who do. Autism Speaks has absolutely no interest in treating Autism. They claim they are all about research, however they are unwilling to do any treatment based research. Treatment based research would have to prove some type of effectiveness. At this point Autism Speaks does not have to prove effectiveness in order to receive more monies. I have yet to see Autism Speaks prove effectiveness in their research. To those who write and receive grants, this is called a money pit. Autism Speaks has a great PR ... which makes perfect sense considering the family that started Autism Speaks is heavily involved in the entertainment business. They use movie stars, TV personalities, and a host of other entertainment personalities to raise money for an organization that has never proven one thing about Autism considering the billions of dollars that they have received this is down right pathetic. The worst thing is, Autism Speaks sucks monies away from those who are interested in TREATMENT and treatment based research. In a message dated 7/18/2007 12:48:01 P.M. Despite 's courageous and admanant belief that vaccinations were the impetus for her son's spiral into autism, her parents, the original founders of Autism Speaks do not want to rock the boat of Big Pharma by telling the truth about the connection between vaccinations and Autism. My dgd who was pulled from the despair of Autism is now in a regular kindergarten class with no aide and did exceptionally well this year. What is remarkable about her classmates are that they composed of both Amish (who do not vaccinate) and the rest who do. I could not find one child who was not Amish who was not stricken with some form of mercury/metal/vaccine damage in the form of; learning disabilities, ADHD, attention or fine or gross motor control problems. Conversely I could not help but notice that every single one of the Amish children had NO such disability. This occurrence did not escape the observation of their teacher. No, until Autism Speaks is willing to speak the truth....I can't vote for them to receive more monies to be wasted trying to find a genetic causation for Autism. Guest guest
No offense taken. I would be happy to discuss with either of you some of the incorrect facts about Autism Speaks you have shared with our group. If you would like to do that off line or by phone please feel free to email me at sharigoldberg22@... We are all working on one common goal which is to help our children. The Website below has a lot of great information. You can get the facts about Autism Speaks and the 40+ treatment grants that CAN/NAAR/AS have funded over the years right there. You can also learn about the three treatment-related programs designed to improve the quality of life our children lead: ATN, CTN and ITA. There's a whole page on the AS site devoted to treatment grants (http://www.autismspeaks.org/science/programs/treatment_grants.php). Sincerely, ShariGet a sneak peek of the all-new AOL.com. Guest guest
With all due respect, I too, cannot vote for Autism Speaks. " Autism Speaks " ...not for me or my grandson, who was damaged by vaccines, and is recovering with the help of biomedical interventions. Autism Speaks... on behalf of the Pharmaceutical companies, simply by diverting attention away from the autism/vaccine connection. They envision consolidating major autism groups under one name...but THEY want to control where the money raised for research goes, and we know that it isn't going where it will ruffle the feathers of the Pharmaceutical companies. My dh bought AS magnets for our and our dd's family cars. He thought he was helping our grandson's cause, but after discussing my feelings towards AS, we agreed to package them up and return them directly to the s. I will continue to monitor their website and PR releases. It is urgent that they properly allocate solicited funds that will fairly represent all possible causes of autism. This includes the autism/vaccine connection. When this happens along with the rightful acknowledgement of biomedical interventions, Autism Speaks will have my support. > > No offense meant, but no thank you, I cannot vote for Autism Speaks. Guest guest
Lmao. They tried to have me arrested at their Cleveland House of Blues benefit concert a few months ago, because I was standing outside on the sidewalk in an 'autism, it's no mystery it's mercury' tee-shirt, calmly and politely handing out information about thimerosal in vaccines. I was " spoiling their evening " , I was told. Vote to give them money??? Ahahahahahahah.
Guest guest
I'm sorry, Shari...my reply sounds like an attack on you, which it certainly is not. I know how hard you work with CAN. You are helping to raise autism awareness as well as research dollars every day. This, in addition to helping your own son to recover... I truly respect that and I hope that you will accept my apology. We ARE on the same side. I am also aware that CAN has given grant money to fund studies that DO address mercury and other environmental links to autism http://www.cureautismnow.org/site/c.bhLOK2PILuF/b.2506569/k.C8B2/Gran ts_Funded__2007.htm My feelings towards Autism Speaks stems from their lack of support to parents and organizations who truly believe that children have been injured by their vaccines. Also, parents who believe in biomedical intervention, need to feel included in the agenda. Unfortunately, a schism has been created.... We need to bridge the gap and work as one. Admittedly, I was disappointed in the AS/CAN merge. However, it may be this merge that will help to unite the autism community. I DO believe in CAN and I hope that as an organization, this group will continue to reach out to re-connect the autism community. There is work to be done. Again, my apologies for the way my post came across. I truly appreciate your hard work as a parent and as a leader. -Trish > > > > No offense meant, but no thank you, I cannot vote for Autism > Speaks. Guest guest
Shari and to all,I am sorry that my busy life did not allow for timely response. I have been so busy with my legal challenges. I want to share the recent Autism Speaks amicus brief that was filed at the US Supreme Court on behalf of a family. This brief may change a few perspectives of those who do not know how much Autism Speaks is committed to children and families with Autism. I want to share with you that I voted for AS!!!Here is the link to the briefhttp://www.autismspeaks.org/docs/d_200707_Brief_amicus_curiae_Autism_Speaks.pdf I hope this brief can reassure those who have doubts and bring hope to all our families with knowing that there are organizations (Autism Speaks) out there fighting in the trenches for families--which I can tell you is not a nice place to be. This brief surely demonstrates the integrity of Autism Speaks.Enough from my soap box!!I hope everyone is enjoying their summer and their families. Guest guest
My understanding is--there is a case pending review of the Supreme Court where the question that is being asked is:Does the child have to attend the public school first--before a parent can ask for private tuition reimbursement through a court action? It is split right now. Some courts say you must attend the public and fail first and some say that you can ask for tuition regardless if the child attended. There is some info on the case if you google the case name in. Hope this helpsSandee
Guest guest
I can say regardless of how I feel about Autism speaks that their "1 in 166" commercials have done their job in drawing attention to the problem. For that, I'm grateful. I also wanted to say that I appreciated n's comments concerning the need for financial support for families NOW in lieu of spending a slew of money for research that is vainly looking for genetic reasons for Autism. In my opinion, it's money wasted as many people's children's futures are being sacrificed in an attempt to prove vaccines don't cause Autism in order to protect the drug companies. ----- Original Message ----- From: sharigoldberg22@... You've said that there was no arrest attempt, publicly, and I intend to defend myself publicly. Were you there? Were you the person who told me that my presence there on the sidewalk handing out information about mercury in vaccines was " spoiling your evening " ? If you were there, then you know that I was told to leave and that if I didn't I would be arrested. You know that there were police cars, and that the management of the House of Blues asked me to leave or else I would be arrested. The police officers also told me that I would have to leave, or else face arrest. It was only when the chief of police came that I was told that I could remain and continue to hand out my information, since I was on public property, not causing any disturbance, and within my legal rights. > We asked that you come inside to our event and put your paperwork on our > Resource Table so people interested could then take the information rather than > it be handed to them as they got out of their cars. I then agreed to stand away from the doors, beyond the House of Blues frontage, but soon realized that all of the guests were being dropped off in front of the doors and their cars parked by valet, which meant that nobody saw me there as they would have if they'd been parking their cars and walking into the venue. (I quit approaching people as they were leaving their cars to be picked up by the valet service when I was asked to do so by the valet service attendants and the Autism Speaks benefit organizers.) So I then went inside and explained that I had changed my mind and would be outside near the doors after all, and was told by someone that they would go and see if that was acceptable. Although I didn't understand why I should need permission from either the House of Blues management or the Autism Speaks benefit organizers in order to stand outside on public property handing out information, I agreed to wait. I waited about ten minutes and when no one showed up to tell me if it was ok or not, I went back outside onto the sidewalk to hand out fliers again. > You were invited in and chose to do it your way instead, that is the only > reason we needed assistance from security. Don't forget we are all on the same > side...the side of our children. You've told me that I chose to stand outside, be disruptive, and cause a scene. If you call calmly handing out information to people interested enough to take my pieces of paper `causing a disturbance', then yes, I did do that. I might suggest that police cars gathered around the doorways and arrest threats could better be described as a `disturbance', but I was not the one responsible for their presence there that evening. You've also said that I could continue to laugh, but that Autism isn't funny but rather is painful and stressful and difficult. You certainly don't need to tell me that. You said that there are no sides, just the side of our children, but you are wrong. There ARE two sides. There is the side that is willing to hear all viewpoints, and then there is the side that seems very anxious that certain viewpoints are never aired publicly. I am not doing this for your children. I am doing this for myself. I am not doing this for my children, either. My children aren't diagnosed with autism. In fact, it is quite possible that what I am doing in trying to bring people's attention to the issue of mercury in vaccines is more detrimental than helpful, as far as my own children are concerned. But I do feel that it is certainly in their interests that I speak out when I feel that someone is being deceitful. You've said that you are here to help your child and as many children as you can, not to argue with me. I don't want to argue, either. I will not discuss this or anything else with you until you admit that an attempt was made to have me arrested, and apologize for claiming otherwise. Sincerely, Robin Nemeth
Guest guest
I've been a member of this list for probably about 2 years. Although there has been disagreement among members in the past, I don't remember ever seeing such strong emails about a particular topic. In any event, I really don't think it is my business; however, given that I have received these emails, it has become my business (and everyone else's business who subcribes to this group). I am not in a position to say who is right or wrong - everyone has an opinion. I think it is, however, unfortunate that this discussion has caused some hard feelings among members of this group. This group was started for SUPPORT -- mostly for parents and loved ones impacted by autism. It is a place where people can come and discuss their pain, joys and successes. It is also a place where we can bounce ideas off of each other. For me personally, it does not matter what treatment methodology a person believes in and/or is using for his/her child. All that matters is that their child is improving and life within their family is improving. I personally have used (and investigated) a number of treatments. I've never been one to utilize one treatment to the exclusion over the other (I'm sure I've been criticized by others for this). I'm a big believer in behavior intervention along with dietary intervention. I've tried other interventions with my children, which did not work. Just because these interventions did not work with my children doesn't mean they won't work for others. Each parent has to make their own decisions on choice of therapy. With respect to research, I don't think anyone in the group is against research. However, I would bet the majority of this group would not benefit from research on the causes of autism -- we do not have a time machine and cannot go back and change the fact that our children (or loved ones) have this condition. Research in this area would, however, benefit our future generations. In my opinion (I would like to emphasize that it is my opinion), this group's members would benefit more from research in autism treatments. Although it is not my place, I am sorry that certain members of this group have been hurt (intentionally or not) by the discussions and/or events that may have occurred recently. I want to also say I'm sorry to Shari -- I don't think you thought your email would spark such strong feelings. In any event, please keep in mind that this group is meant for support -- support for everyone impacted by autism. Just my thoughts....(please don't beat me up too much) Debbie Z. > > Hi Everyone, > > I haven't had time yet to really research the newness of Autism Speaks.
