Iodine Allergy

I am curious if anyone knows what is going on with the people who have

the severe allergic reaction to Iodine. I remember when I was nursing

it was something we were always careful about.

It seems there are at least two parts to iodine use in hospitals - the

use of it for Xray imaging and as a disinfectant. Will the people who

are allergic to the injectable iodine dyes be able to take Iodorol?

Gail.

Hi Many years ago I had a scan with intravenous dye and it was detected then and the X-ray was cancelled and I am about to have a CT scan and am having to take Prednisolone before this scan takes place. Iodine allergies are very rare. What are you symptoms? How did you determine that you have an allergy?

You are not allergic to iodine, you are allergvic to " intravenous dye that is used for scans " .If you were allergic to pure iodine, you would be dead, or not human - it's in every one of our cells.

OTOH, " intravenous dye that is used for scans " contains all *kinds* of crap.Allergy to Radiocontrast Media

Reactions to RCM are relatively common, occurring in 5 to 8% of people receiving IV dye. Most of these reactions are mild, and include a feeling of warmth, nausea and vomiting. Generally, these symptoms occur only for a short period of time and do not require treatment. Moderate reactions, including severe vomiting, hives and swelling, occur in 1% of

people receiving RCM, and frequently require treatment. Severe, life-threatening reactions, including anaphylaxis, occur in 0.1% of people receiving RCM, with an expected death rate of 1 person in every 75,000.

Reactions to LOCM are much lower than that of HOCM, although the most

severe reactions, including death, have been reported to occur at similar rates with both types of contrast media.

Reactions to RCM are not truly allergic in nature, meaning that there is no allergic antibody present that causes the reaction. Rather, RCM acts to directly release histamine and other chemicals from mast cells. from  http://allergies.about.com/od/medicationallergies/a/rcmallergy.htmI actually have the symptoms highlighted in pink - I recognized it as a histamine reaction when it first happened, and I've never said/done anything about it.

I take up to 200mg iodine, and have NO REACTION.-- Peace . . . Hawkridgein a NE Seattle 'burb

Usually people are allergic to other substances in the dye, but because iodine

is

demonized they blame iodine.

Gadolinium is highly toxic by itself, but it is combined with a chelating agent

(varies by manufacturer) that is supposed to minimize the toxicity. I know at

least one person who suffers terrible ongoing side effects, probably lifelong. I

doubt I would ever voluntarily subject myself to this contrasting agent.

Carole,

Back around 1983 when MRIs were still very new -- and probably before CT scans were being done at all, because my memory is vague about when CT scans first became popular -- my father had a reaction to the dye used for the MRI. The doctor at the Mayo Clinic (where one of the only MRI machines in the whole country was located back then) told him to take Benadryl to combat his allergy to the dye that was being used for his MRI.

I don't know if they still use the same dyes nowadays or not (especially for CT scans vs. MRIs), but keep in mind that simple Benadryl might be protective as well -- although prednisolone might be even better.

I think your original question was about an allergy to the dye which is used together with the radioactive iodine though, rather than about an actual iodine allergy per se -- unless I misunderstood your question. The doctors probably referred to it as an "iodine allergy" when they should have explained more clearly that what actually causes this kind of allergy is a reaction to the dye, not to iodine itself, so that you wouldn't become confused by their careless descriptive terminology.

If you are still concerned, you might want to ask your doctor for a clearer explanation.

hello everyone. annie here -- i'm new to the group. have been enjoying reading all the comments for the last week.

i also am allergic to the form of iodine used in the intravenous dyes. i'm allergic to so many things, and this form is one of them. plus i'm allergic to shellfish, but can take the iodoral. which is why i value living here in WA state and being so close to that doctor at the tahoma clinic.
