Tell Your Story to Lawmakers!

Help to Ensure Affordable Health Care to More Ohioans

Ohio’s House and Senate committees on health care are holding joint hearings this summer around the state. They want to hear from Ohioans about expanding access to affordable coverage to more Ohioans. Will the legislators’ solutions provide coverage that gets people the health care they need without financial hardship? The hearing dates and cities are:

July 30th 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM Cleveland

July 31st 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM Toledo

August 6th 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM Springfield

August 7th 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM Zanesville

August 8th 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM Sharonville

Stories about the experiences of real people are essential to securing adequate coverage. Lawmakers need to hear about real people in order to understand why adequate health coverage matters in the lives of individuals and their families. And we get media attention when reporters can write about the people impacted by government’s decisions.

We need real people to tell their stories!

We are looking for people to tell their stories at these hearings. We are collecting stories for the Ohio Family Coverage Coalition, the Coalition for Affordable Healthcare in Ohio (CAHO), and other coalitions that support expanded access to private and public coverage. If you know someone who fits any of the following descriptions, let us know and - with their permission - we will contact them.

Ø Working, uninsured people who cannot afford insurance offered at work

Ø Working uninsured people who work where insurance is not offered

Ø a person who cannot get health insurance due to a pre-existing condition

Ø People who had insurance when they got sick or injured and have crippling medical debt despite being insured.

Ø People with chronic medical condition who cannot afford any contribution to premium with income less than 100% FPL. (or income no higher than 150% FPL).

Ø a person who has insurance with a high deductible ($1,000 or more) and cannot afford health care.

Ø a small employer who is struggling to pay for insurance. (Especially an employer who is trying to lower costs and is only being offered high deductible options as a way to keep costs down.)

(OVER)

UHCAN Ohio will interview people, write up the story, and give the storyteller an opportunity to see the story to make corrections. UHCAN Ohio will ask storytellers to present their stories at a hearing. UHCAN Ohio will secure their consent to provide their name and phone number to reporters or others who are doing stories on this issue. If a consumer wants to limit use of the story – for instance, to be in the newspaper but not on TV – we will respect all limitations.

Remember, every story can make a difference!

Take Me Home Program

We are excited about bringing to Summit County a new program designed to provide enhanced service and protection to our citizens with special needs. The Take Me Home program is a database that is maintained by the Prosecutor and Sheriff’s Offices. The database contains individuals who may need special assistance if they are alone or lost, and is for anyone with a disability that impacts their capacity to communicate. The system includes a picture, demographic information and caregiver contacts. If a person in the Take Me Home system is encountered by a law enforcement officer, the officer can query the system by name or by the person’s description to locate the person’s Take Me Home enrollment record. With the information at hand the officer can appropriately assist the individual.

For more information, go to http://www.co.summit.oh.us/Prosecutor/index.htm. Just look for the Take Me Home logo.

Challenger Golf is free and more people wanted!!! My kids have been doing the Challenge Golf Clinics this year at Edwin Shaw Golf Course (course is designed for disabled persons of all ages and disabilities--very short length, 3 holes, 3 different abilities) every Saturday at 1 pm. Last Saturday, I met and her husband, Dave. has MS and her Non-Profit organization, Mama Mia Helping You, Inc. is funding the entire program/providing scholarships for all who want to join. No financial ability is turned away. The program is fun (they provide clubs, balls and "lessons"). The kids practice hitting the ball for awhile, then move on to a putting green and practice, then the adults and kids get carts and you're on your own for the three holes across the street!! We had a ball!! encourages siblings to attend and be a part of it. The next two Saturdays are not in session (due to other course commitments), but will resume on July 21st at 1 pm. These sessions continue through mid-September and there will be a big cookout and party at the end for everyone. You must talk to at 330-926-9155, leave a mesaage for her, but no financial requirements are necessary. She wants to do this for all kids with various disbailities and their families. I promised her I would get the word out, sicne last Saturday, it was only my three kids and one other boy and she expected a packed house. explained she thought more people needed to understand this was paid for if you call her and she wants all to come. Please consider this as a Saturday activity for your family living with a disability to do. It's 2-3 hours pf your time, less if you cannot handle that, and loads of fun. We want to see you all there. Call her for more information on the program and directions.
