Guest guest
Iodine is effective for reducing thyroid nodules if there hasn't been too much damage done to the tissue (as in scar tissue is there). How much is individual. Have you read the new members document? New Member, need guidance about a multi-nodular goiter Hi, thanks for letting my join the group! I have been diagnosed with a multi-nodular goiter on the right side of my thyroid. I am hypothyroid, have hashi's, and have adrenal fatigue, that I have been battling for years. I take Cytomel and hydrocortisone for these conditions. Will iodine shrink/heal this goiter? Can you tell me where to start and what test I need to have for the iodine defiency or any other testing I need for the nodules? I assume that is where I start....thank you so much!!Perri(34yr old female)
Guest guest
Welcome Perri, A good place is to read the new member doc. you were sent when you joined. If you can't find it, go to our home page, then FILES.. then click on Group Guidelines - read first New Members, then read Iodine New Member. doc., also important to read is To do list for new members and Salt and the Iodine Protocol.doc. Read all you can in the FILES and many of your questions will be answered. The daily email exchanges you will receive are most helpful as well. Guest guest
Thank you ! I have read the members list, have searched through the files, and the messages searching for info on nodules. Still not clear on what to do first....please forgive my brain fog. How do you know if there has been too much tissue damage? Guest guest
You wouldn't. You just have to try using iodine and see what happens. If it doesn't shrink then odds are you have scar tissue. Autoimmune thyroid conditions attack the thyroid tissue. Guest guest
Thank you Kathleen for your nice welcome and assistance!! I did receive 6-8 emails of directions and I have and will continue reading more and more of the files as my time allows and I have the energy to do so. (I am currently sleeping most of my days due to terrible fatigue) Do you mind just directing me toward the cheapest iodine test that you find currently to be the most accurate that I would need? I would love to go ahead and get the shipping, testing, etc. started in the meantime.....don't mean to be a bother with questions. I certainly appreciate any guidance you have time to provide! > > Welcome Perri, > A good place is to read the new member doc. you were sent when you joined. Guest guest
Why do you feel that you need a test? Most of us are deficient (over 90%) & the rate is probably higher with those who have the symptoms on the list. And any iodine you don't need will just be flushed out of your body. Most of us are just adjusting our dose by how we feel anyway. Even once you find a good dose, you sometimes have to adjust it as situations change. Your body is a wonderful indicator.AnneOn Feb 16, 2011, at 10:09 PM, pahuddle wrote: Thank you Kathleen for your nice welcome and assistance!! Guest guest
Perri, I have never taken an iodine test as most of us humans ( and animals most likely) are deficient in iodine, and I would rather use my money to buy Lugol's / Iodoral and organic food. Your terrible fatigue will certainly improve once you start iodine, and make sure you take the companion nutrients, they are very important when taking iodine. Guest guest
Great news if you don't recommend testing first. I don't want to pay for one believe me! I just didn't know....my hypothyroid group drills us to test everything so I just assumed I needed to test before starting. They also say over there to NOT use iodine with adrenal fatigue and I have heard it so much and value their opinions so much to where I have been scared of trying. I JUST found out about this group. I read in the files that you think it is ok to use iodine. I have done everything by the book for my thyroid and adrenals and STILL have debilitating symptoms so I know something is just not right!! So eager to try the iodine. Have you had many others on here use it with adrenal fatigue? Looks like Lugol's drops is the one you recommend?? What dosage do I start with? And, do I just watch for detox symptoms and know then to back off some? .....I am scared to death to be honest with you b/c a mod from the hypo group swears taking iodine made her nearly choke to death. Have you ever heard of this? I assume she meant enlarged thyroid? I know I have lots of questions....Please forgive me; I am BRAND NEW to using iodine and have NO idea what to do/where to start, etc..... I am so very appreciative for you help!! Guest guest
Yes, SEVERE adrenal fatigue....I have worked my way up to 81.25 mg of Iodoral now from finding all this out in July. If I were you I would jump on board, I know iodine is healing me all over, including adrenals. Start with one drop of lugols, then when you tolerate that add more. I have SO much energy now and could barely get out of bed before. Blessings!TammyOn Feb 17, 2011, at 11:16 AM, "pahuddle" <pahuddle@...> wrote: Great news if you don't recommend testing first. Guest guest
If you are tired all the time, I would start on Iodine and use my money for a saliva test for adrenal fatigue and a thyroid panel. Adrenal fatigue and hypothyroid go hand in hand. I know I am hypo as I am on synthroid but I am going to have a Adrenal/thyroid/sex hormone panel done to see what else is involved. Then I am going to the MD to ask for NTH instead of Synthroid. I am taking a smaller dose of Iodine than normal for this group as I need to work on the adrenals as well. But even a gradual increase in my reserves will only help me! Guest guest
Thank you Tammy! That is great news! I too can barely get out of bed some days....NO energy ever! Its horrible as I have a 5 yr old little girl !! Do you have thyroid issues too? I have Hashi's and I'm scared still a little to use iodine, I'm here on this board to learn more and get my nerve up Do they recommend Lugols or Iodoral here? Is there a difference? I looked under the sources file and looks like its not as simple as heading to iherb.com and placing an order? I'm confused still and have much to learn! Guest guest
Thank you again Kathleen! What exactly does Iodine do to Hashi's? Stop the antibody attack? Shrink the goiter and nodules? Guest guest
Hi Perri, Yes, I am hypothyroid too. I found out about the adrenal issues first, but from my understanding it starts with the thyroid. Currently I am on 3 grains of Armour and my labs look the best they have since August. My Free T3 is up, and I can tell.....my energy is great now! I would have never believed it either. I had just had my third baby in April, and the first doctor I went to (although he was in functional medicine) thought I was (pat pat on my shoulder) suffering from " post pardom depression " . Talk about wanting to slap someone silly across the room. I was too sick to slap him, but I could not believe after all my research and reading Dr. 's book on adrenal fatigue that even I as sick as I was knew what was wrong with me and he didn't. Even after I told him. It was because I was crying, and a baby was in the room. Come on, I wish I could tell all new mothers...........it's your THYROID!!! Don't be scared about iodine. The adrenals group means well, and I actually was reluctant to join them for a while because I knew they were iodine natzis (no offense lol). They are just misinformed about iodine. You will find people on here (me for one) who use iodine FAITHFULLY and am seeing a HUGE difference. I wish you could see my friend, . She had to go down the anti-depressant road. She suffered and suffered and those meds did not help her! Guess what, she went up to 150 mg of Iodoral and has dropped back down again to around 75 mg. It makes me want to cry to see her so happy now and full of life again! Seeing her feel so great and reading about others here keeps me going up on the Iodoral. I plan to go at least to 100 mg. It does take a while because my adrenals are so bad. But I'm taking baby steps and try to add 1/2 a tablet (which is 6.25 mg) once a month when I feel like I can handle it. If it gives me too much of a blinding headache, I just back off and try again the next week. Your body will tell you. Be sure you have the supporting nutrients and GOOD salt! The natural thyroid hormone has also helped me, I know. It's a balance of increasing what med at what time. Lugol's is a liquid form and Iodoral a tablet. Your choice. Both are recommended here. You are blessed, I know, to be in this circle of friends. I hope this info encourages you. I am still battling my temps and taking around 30 mg of hydro cortisone a day. I stress dose when I have to go out, etc.... But, I trust in the Lord who has led me this way and is delivering my though such affliction. And I pray he will deliver you also, my friend. Guest guest
Alas, a little tread trimming has me confused. jprocure; Are you getting the 24hr. saliva cortisol test? Did you include aldosterone testing? Read on pahuddle; One of the areas where i 'choose to agree to disagree with the adrenal group is on the emphasis of this saliva test.I think they are so adamant as a reaction to Dr.'s nearly universal rejection of it. My feeling is this; IF, (and thats a big IF) You have a Dr. willing to order it, and an Insurance Co. willing to PAY for it, then O.K. go for it, why not?Be sure to include testing for aldosterone, cause if your Adrenally fatigued and low in Cortisol, you may or may not be low in Aldosterone. However, if your self-pay and self-treat, I'm not sure I see any advantage to the test.If you get an accurate thermometer, (I have found the B-D basal to be accurate enough) and chart your temps and interpret according to the Drrind.com instructions, it will A) Tell you if you are Hypo, Adrenally fatigued, or both.B)Allow you to track your bodies responce to treatment. In addition you can do the pupil test, which will tell you if you are also low in aldosterone. In order to take the saliva test, you have to be off all adrenal meds/supplements for 2 weeks; so, if you have started anything, to try to treat your adrenals, you have to make yourself sicker, to do the test.In addition, once you take the test and start treating, can't test again to measure responce to treatment.I'm not conviced the saliva test is a BETTER measure of How fatigued your adrenals are, than temperature charting. And, the reccomendation not to use one lab due to innacurate results/poor specimen handling (the lab I happened to use) puts the accuracy in question.i.e. at the time i used it the lab was reccomended.Later it was reccomended not to use it. SO, what did I get for my $110, or whatever I spent?Nothing I couldn't detirmine for myself with a thermometer, a flashlight and a mirror, in home for free. just my opinion.,,, Jim > > > > Great news if you don't recommend testing first. Guest guest
HI Jim I am taking temps and that is showing me that I am adrenally insufficient AND slightly hypo. I " m taking the cortisol test so I can get an idea of the rhythm of my cortisol production. I am paying for it. If I need to I would like to be on HC or adaptogens as necessary to get things right. I didn't get aldosterone because I can probably get that through the doc's (read: for free). I can't get saliva testing done through the local lab. Also, I am hoping that once the adrenals are settled, the aldosterone takes care of itself! You do make a good point though. Jaye > > > > > > Great news if you don't recommend testing first. Guest guest
My experiance; I was focused on the Cortisol, (and HC) because need it, in order for the thyroid hormone to get into the cells. Therefore i didn't pay much attention to aldosterone.Couldn't get temps to stabilise, (even @ 80mg./day of HC)so went through everything I was doing, trying to figure out what was wrong.Stumbled across aldosterone, and did the 'PUPIL TEST " . Sure enough, had major 'Maccarana eyes'; pupils all over the place!Started on Florinef.Don't know for sure if that was why temps weren't stabilising, cause also found several other errors in my 'program'.However, results of pupil test confirmed need for Florinef, and so glad I checked.Jim > > > > > > > > Great news if you don't recommend testing first.
