Guest guest
Are you aware that Forest Pharmaceuticals changed the formula of Armour and this has caused many to have to increase their dosages. Some, like me, were unable to continue on Armour and had to switch. I am on Nature-throid and doing much better. My children are on the same. Some have switched to ERFA Thyroid. Do you have hashi's? If you do then your thyroid is being attacked and it will start to fail. If you have hashi's then you should not be eating gluten either. Gluten proteins are similar to the thyroid and for some reason the body will attack the thryoid when gluten is ingested. I don't think you can make the leap that iodine caused you to have to increase your thyroid medication. There are just too many components that come into play. Guest guest
I often had a sore throat particularly on one side of my mouth when I started iodine, with a great big white spot right near my eustachian tube! I has gone now but I put it down to detoxing because I think I have either a sinus that is full of gung on that side or something to do with my fillings which I have more of on that side. It gave me a constant sensitivity for a long while. I take my iodine in 2 goes to avoid overloading. (In fact I had to take the whole lot together today and I have a slight tightness in the throat). You can also back off with the iodine and take a smaller dose when your throat is not so sensitive. Sometimes there is just too much stuff coming out of your body for comfort. The head is full of little cavities that can get filled up with impurities over the years, such as candida for ex. Try to lower your dose and get it to clear out more slowly so that it doesn't bother you. Guest guest
I also raised my thyroid dosage, and I'm taking NatureThroid. But I don't view taking more hormone as a negative. I view it as I was suboptimally functioning, and as I've started being in better health my body has gained the ability to operate at a fuller capacity. I don't really care how much thryoid supplement I'm taking. Being attached to those numbers seems to me to be enslaved by lab tests again instead of going by symptoms. I know that I am operating to a fuller capacity because my work is a lot easier to accomplish. Consequently I am able to accomplish more. Also I've lost, to quote my chiropractor, " A lot of weight. " If I was taking more thyroid and was getting fatter, I'd be worried. I needed to take more because I developed a rind of skin on my heels and started to get it on my elbows, and I'd never had that problem since I first got diagnosed and treated. After the increase, the rinds went away. I just think my capacity increased and since I'm autoimmune to thyroid, I'm not getting any from my own body. If I need more thyroid hormone it just means I'm functioning on a higher level. And I know this is a fact because my work life is going better than it has at any time since the winter I thought I was going crazy and was finally dosed with severe hypothyroidism, ten years ago. I'm going by how I feel. Fortunately my primary practitioner, an acupuncturist/ND, is very supportive of this. He says I should be taking as much thyroid hormone as I need, and don't worry about the amount. He says if I need that much, it's how much I need to be functional. We so often talk here of doctors who won't properly prescribe thyroid hormone levels, and how bad that is for one's health. I'm just happy that I have enough recovery of health to know just how well I can truly function, given the correct hormone balance. -- >Are you aware that Forest Pharmaceuticals changed the formula of Armour >and this has caused many to have to increase their dosages. Guest guest
Another way of looking at this is, what determined why your Armour has been increased? Was it the TSH reading? It's a known fact that iodine will raise TSH at first but that it's not a sign of illness. If the increase was solely based on TSH reading, it's an erroneous response to the reading. -- >Are you aware that Forest Pharmaceuticals changed the formula of Armour >and this has caused many to have to increase their dosages. Guest guest
Hi Corry! How many drops to you use topically? Is that more than what you took orally or less? I'm using it topically on my breasts and they're no longer painful. Plus, like you said, it must taste awful, because it smells awful on my hands! I was wondering if anyone's used it on their scalp and if it would grow hair? Guest guest
> > Maybe applying it topically, your body will just absorb what it needs > and not cause too many side effects. There seems to have grown a misconception among some of the newer members that symptoms following iodine ingestion are " side effects " of iodine. They are not. Iodine doesn't have " side effects " . Symptoms you may experience are the symptoms caused by bromide detoxification. The iodine causes the body to get rid of bromides, which are poison to the body, and the release of the bromides causes the symptoms. It's actually a good sign because it means you're getting rid of toxins. Also, those detox symptoms usually are transient if your detox pathways are functioning well. Acne is a sign that one's detox pathways are not functioning that well and the bromide is coming out through the skin instead of the urine. Weight gain is an even further sign that detox pathways are not working well, because there the body is storing the released bromides as fat since they are continuing to circulate and not be removed via urine. If you're painting it on your skin, and feeling good, there is no reason not to also take it internally so you can actually benefit from the higher doses that will create good health. --, moderator of Iodine list > > I still seem to get the best results when I apply it topically to my > stomach. Guest guest
Thanks for the advice. I don't take it internally because according to my thyroid panel my thyroid is working well, even though I have the symptoms of hypo. Extreme Coldness, low body temp, dry hair etc. So I'm not sure if I have a thyroid problem or just very iodine deficient, so that is why I just paint it on, plus I take 1 kelp a day. I thought I might overdue it if I take Lugols both internally and externally since my numbers don't show hypo. Guest guest
HI Barb, Just a few drops seems to make a large enough area. If I put it on a really sensitive area it sometimes causes a bit of a red irritation, and it has to be put on smoothly (no pooling) to prevent irritation. I have tried it on my breasts too! but it causes a bit of a rash there if I put too much on. And to answer your question, I put more on topically then I did orally. The thighs and the soles of the feet are good areas because they aren't so sensitive. They use to put it on the soles of the feet to cure iodine deficiency 100 years back. The soles of the feet have meridians going to all parts of the body so it actually makes sense that it would be a good place to apply it. Guest guest
Hello, Do you happen to know why iodine raises TSH levels, please? I have nodules plus hyperT. However, T3 and T4 have now normalised, but TSH is still low at 0.01, so I was wondering if iodine raises TSH maybe it will raise mine and cure my problem? Sorry I can't address you by name, but I can't work out who sent the last post. :-) > > Hi Corry, it raises the TSH level but does not cause hypo symptoms. Guest guest
Iodine doesn't always increase TSH. It can increase TSH as a method of producing more thyroglobulin that will result in more thyroid hormone creation. But if you have hyperT issues then this is not what you want. What supplements are you taking? For Hyperthyroidism L-Carnatine, Iodine and Lithium are used. Have you tried some L-Tyrosine? Are you taking any good Omega 3 fatty acids? These can be beneficial to thyroid health. Buist, ND Re: iodine causing thyroid enlargement/hashis Hello,Do you happen to know why iodine raises TSH levels, please? I have nodules plus hyperT. Guest guest
Can anyone help me with my original problem, iodine is clearly causing me to feel pain and tenderness in my throat area. Is this a bromide detoxification. It seems commonly known that iodine triggers autoimmune thyroid in the mainstream, however Dr. Brownstein is the only one who denies this. My experience seems to indicate that it does cause hashis? I'm not sure what to do. > > Iodine doesn't always increase TSH. Guest guest
The thyroid sometimes responds to increased iodine with temporary swelling, & that can be a bit uncomfortable. It is usually brief. What experience do you have that indicates iodine causes hashis, because people on this list have clearly stated that it has CURED them of it? There is a lot of bad information, & often that is what we have heard that makes us nervous.AnneOn Feb 16, 2011, at 2:57 PM, wrote: Can anyone help me with my original problem, iodine is clearly causing me to feel pain and tenderness in my throat area. Guest guest
Hello, Thanks for your reply. I realised today that if my TSH increases my thyroxine levels will also, resulting in greater hyperT symptoms presumably ... I wasn't thinking. I'm not on any medications at the minute. The doctor is still doing tests. I definately have 4 nodules on my thyroid and very mild hyperT symptoms. I have just started taking magnesium, potassium, calcium and a whole range of other supplements. I took copper at around 4 mg for 4 days. Then had a break of 6 days, but when I went back to taking copper I had bad reactions, quite uncomfortable feelings, like strong pulling sensations and tingly feelings in my body, metallic taste in mouth, headaches and so forth. So I'm not on copper at the minute, apart from what I get from food. I had oysters yesterday. I haven't tried the supplements you mention. But thank you for the advice. I'm about to send off for a hair mineral test, hopefully that will shed some light on what I need. I'm desperate to get my nodules to shrink and I've read (albeit it was only a couple of sentences on a website somewhere) that Brownstein and Dr Abraham have experienced nodules shrinking on iodine supplements. 2 days ago I started taking lugol's 3%, 1 drop a day (about 1.5 mg of iodine so I'm told) I'm going to increase the dosage each week by one drop as long as I don't go hyper ... if my nodules were caused by iodine defieciency I reasoned that they'll only clear up if I take iodine. I understand the problem of iodine making hyperT symtoms worse, but if I can weather the storm (no pun intended!) I want to stick with it. I'll research the supplements you mention. Thanks again. :-) > > Iodine doesn't always increase TSH. It can increase TSH as a method of producing more thyroglobulin that will result in more thyroid hormone creation. Guest guest
Meadosweet77:I am way behind in reading, but can’t find any further reply to your post. Iodine does NOT make hyperT symptoms worse. It HEALS hyperT. You might have detox reactions, which some misinterpret as the iodine being bad for you. You need the iodine. Please read about the companion nutrients and bromide detox reactions. Donna in IL Hello,Thanks for your reply. I realised today that if my TSH increases my thyroxine levels will also, resulting in greater hyperT symptoms presumably ... I wasn't thinking.I'm not on any medications at the minute. The doctor is still doing tests. I definately have 4 nodules on my thyroid and very mild hyperT symptoms.I have just started taking magnesium, potassium, calcium and a whole range of other supplements. I had oysters yesterday.I haven't tried the supplements you mention. I understand the problem of iodine making hyperT symtoms worse, but if I can weather the storm (no pun intended!) I want to stick with it.I'll research the supplements you mention. Thanks again. :-)>> Iodine doesn't always increase TSH. It can increase TSH as a method of producing more thyroglobulin that will result in more thyroid hormone creation. But if you have hyperT issues then this is not what you want. What supplements are you taking?> > For Hyperthyroidism L-Carnatine, Iodine and Lithium are used. > > Have you tried some L-Tyrosine?
