Easy ways to stay in shape in the new year. e-Speaks || January 11, 2008 President Approves $162 Million in Funding for Combating Autism Act President Bush signed the Fiscal 2008 Omnibus Appropriations Act, which contains appropriations for the Combating Autism Act at the full level stipulated in the CAA, less an across the board cut of 1.747%. In total, Autism Speaks expects a 2008 fiscal appropriation of approximately $162 million, as authorized by the Combating Autism Act. Read more. Multi-State Insurance Legislation Campaign Announced Autism Speaks will undertake a multi-state initiative to pass insurance coverage provisions for autism services in Pennsylvania, Florida, California and Michigan. Most states do not require private insurance companies to cover even essential autism treatments and services, resulting in out-of-pocket expenses that can exceed $50,000 per year. Autism Speaks, together with other autism advocacy groups, is working to change state insurance laws to require private health insurance policies to cover the diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorders for individuals under the age of 21. Using the AGRE Resource, Study Finds Chromosome 16 Strongly Associated with Autism Strong and compelling evidence that a region on chromosome 16 appears to play an important role in susceptibility for autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) was reported by The Autism Consortium, an innovative research, clinical and family collaboration dedicated to radically accelerating research and enhancing clinical care for ASDs. Genetic data from Autism Speaks' AGRE collection was instrumental in the Consortium's research findings, which were published in the January 9 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. Read more. Autism Symposium Held to Examine Novel Therapies Autism Speaks, together with the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP), held a symposium to review the "Development of Novel Neuropharmacological Therapeutics for Autism." More than 80 scientists explored the opportunities and barriers to progress in the field of pharmacological treatment of autism. Autism Speaks' Treatment Committee will utilize the information presented at this symposium in its efforts to advance autism research. Read more. "Autism Speaks Week" in South Florida Announced Autism Speaks announced an unprecedented South Florida autism awareness and fundraising initiative to take place from March 24-30. "Autism Speaks Week" will will include a multi-part news series, broadcast on NBC stations WPTV and WTVJ and Miami's Telemundo 51, the ING DIRECT Ride Now South Florida fundraising motorcycle event, a live telethon, an online auction and a gala Concert for Autism Speaks featuring Lionel Richie at The Mar-a-Lago Club. "Rock 'Til It Stops" will be an evening of food, music and fun as the Cleveland community joins together to raise awareness about autism and funds to support Autism Speaks' local and national research, education and outreach initiatives.
