Guest guest
That stuff about the thyroid shutting down is an oft-heard myth, but you will hear it a lot, & need to tune it out. Several people on this list have reported being able to REDUCE their thyroid meds after starting iodine -- you couldn't do that if it was shutting your thyroid down -- & SOME have been able to get off thyroid meds altogether. (Not everybody does -- depends on how much of your problem is iodine deficiency.)Starting iodine can cause a temporary change in your thyroid test values, & hungry thyroids sometimes swell up slightly when they get their first taste of iodine. (For me, the swelling only lasted a few days. And it is a good sign. It means that your thyroid REALLY wants the iodine.) Some people experience detox symptoms if they increase their dose too quickly; those are reduced or eliminated by the companion nutrients, salt loading, or reducing your dose for a while.Yes, at the doses we talk about here, iodine is safe. Unfortunately, there is this whole big mythology that says otherwise. Try it, you'll like it. Seriously, when it starts doing some of the things for you that it has done for the rest of us, it won't seem so scary.AnneOn Feb 22, 2011, at 8:07 PM, hlmacdon wrote: Our Lugol's arrived today. I bought the 2% just to get started, and we plan to take four drops for adults, and one to two for my 6 year old. It doesn't taste like anything in water! Surprising! I was looking through the frequently asked questions file, and there are a few articles/emails listed that talk about adverse effects like iodine induced hyperthyroidism, that the thyroid can temporarily shut down, etc. That has me freaked out. Can anyone reassure me? None of us have any known health or thyroid issues, except my son has autism and it's possible he is hypo thyroid. Is it positively safe that we are doing this on our own? Thankyou! R
Guest guest
thank you both, for your replies. I am referring to email #4484 on this group. It is authored by " Zoe " and it is listed in the Files, under Basics, and under Frequently asked quesitons, then under " how much iodine should I take " and it's the third or fourth message down. I was concerned about it because it was listed here, in this group. I like your answers better...that it is safe and we should try it! We did! My husband took 10 drops of 2% Lugols (against my advice for 4 drops) and I took 4. We will start my 6 year old on one drop which I guess is about 3 mg, and I am fearful of giving that to my 2 year old until I see what my older child does. How long before I see any results? thanks again! R > > > Our Lugol's arrived today. Guest guest
-- WHen this list started, the state of our knowledge was a lot less developed than it is now. A lot of the material in the Files section is completely outdated, and we are in the process of cleaning it out and reorganizing it. When Steph joined the Iodine list, she brought the knowledge and information about the companion nutrients. So you can see that this has been a process, we are still in process. So I'm very sorry that you were confused by information you found on the site. We hope very soon that will no longer happen. -- At 02:16 PM 2/23/2011, you wrote: >thank you both, for your replies. Guest guest
This part of the article cracked me up: " These law-abiding rats refused to become hypothyroid and instead followed their normal physiological response to the iodide load. Guest guest
Yes, exactly. Nice sense of humor there. --V At 06:28 PM 2/24/2011, you wrote: >This part of the article cracked me up: > " These law-abiding rats refused to become hypothyroid and instead followed >their normal physiological response to the iodide load.
