That is not something that we normally hear as an issu. Magnesium and Vit C can cause diarrhea.

Does Iodoral cause diarrhea?

I started taking Iodoral last week - just 1/2 of a 12.5 mg tab. I took that for 4 days along with the companion nutrients and didn't seem to have any problems, so I then increased to 1 12.5 mg tab. I started to get diarrhea every morning right after I wake up. I take the Iodoral about 2 hours later w/ my breakfast.I started on trace minerals and fresh green juices around the same time, so I'm trying to figure out what is causing it. Could it be the Iodoral?

That is the problem with starting multiple things at once, you don't know what to attribute a change (good or bad) to.  I would tend to suspect the juices if your system is not used to them.  But I am someone with GI issues and can only speak to what would be likely to cause me issues.

What type of Vit C are you taking and how much?

What type of Magnesium are you taking and how much?

Certain types of both of those have been linked to diarrhea in some people.

Yes, I know. I probably should have waited longer before introducing new

things. I gave each new item about 2-3 days to watch for reactions and didn't

notice anything, but next time I will definitely wait longer.

I do have a lot of GI issues. I'm on the GAPS diet, which does seem to be

helping some, but I am worried about the juices being the problem. Right now I

seem to only tolerate 2 vegetables - broccoli and green beans, so i was using

the juices to get more nutrients in. I certainly hope they aren't the problem.

I'm wondering about the magnesium. I'm using Natural Calm and have taken 1 tsp

nightly for the last few months with no problems, but I did increase to 2 tsp

shortly after starting the Iodoral, so maybe that's it.

For vitamin C, I use Perque Potent C Guard, which is a buffered ascorbate powder

that is completely hypoallergenic.

I think I'll drop down to 1 tsp of Natural Calm tonight and see how things are

tomorrow.

Sometimes people do say they get diarrhea from iodine, others constipation. If

you're juicing, definitely some detoxing going on. Are you taking any

probiotics?

I second the probiotics. I was taking some when I started Iodoral, and things

got very 'regular', but having run out of probiotics and continued the Iodoral,

things have slowed down considerably.

Make sure magnesium intake is sufficient too.

So you think if the diarrhea is caused by the juice it's just a detox reaction

that I should push through? I can't do a lot of probiotics yet, but I do drink

at least 1/2 cup a day of coconut water kefir and also usually have about 2

tablespoons of sauerkraut juice - I can't digest the actual sauerkraut just yet.

How much magnesium is sufficient? I was taking 1 tsp which I think is about 175

mg. I did double that to 350 mg when I started the Iodoral, but I'm thinking

that may be too much.

For what it is worth, home-made liposomal C helped bowel issues for everybody at our house. The contipated loosened up, the one with diarrhea started having formed stools, & the IBS person has experienced continuing calming of the gut.AnneOn Feb 28, 2011, at 9:32 AM, miniemom wrote: Yes, I know. My mother had diarrhea when she took two tabs, then she stopped. I think it

Linn,

I get a lot of die off from probiotics, so for now I'm just focusing on

fermented foods like sauerkraut juice, beet kvass, coconut water kefir, homemade

goat yogurt, etc.

Okay gotcha, assuming you're treating candida. It's probably from detox then.

I would worry about the vegetable juice of raw green beans and broccoli. Raw

green beans can cause digestive disturbance for

a number of people. It may be the phasin, which is removed by cooking.

If you have thyroid problems, broccoli is a goitrogen, a food which blocks

thyroid hormone and /or iodine functions.

http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=george & dbid=47

Vitamen C doesn't have to be an allergen to cause diarrrhea. You don't say how

much you take, but you may want to scale back if it is over 5,000 mgs.

Do you like celery? It can be a good vegetable juice base with whatever else you

like in it, parsley or other herbs.

Sorry to make you worry about your food and juices. Food is very powerful in

some ways.

Sorry, I totally missed that earlier. Kathleen has a lot of experience juicing, maybe shoot her an email and ask what other types of green items would be good for you. I juice some also but mainly beets, celery, carrots and cucumbers. I'm thinking that might be too high carb for what you're looking to do. LinnOn Mar 1, 2011, at 6:32 PM, masuruha2 wrote:

I like the green leaf juice from the Gerson Therapy. it consists of as many of the various kinds of leaves as possible as mentioned below (no others)

Lettuce

Red Cabbage Leaves (2 or 3 leaves) Endives

Beet tops (young inner leaves) Romaine

Swiss Chard Green Pepper ( 1/4 of small one)

Escarole Watercress ( 1/4 bunch)

Add one medium green apple per glass of juice. After juicing, drink immediately.

Thanks Kathleen. That gives me something to work with for juicing. I reduced

the Natural Calm I was taking at night and that seems to have solved the problem

with the diarrhea, so I think I can continue with the juicing!!

I'm curious about the greens that are mentioned below. Do you know why they

don't suggest spinach or kale? I always thought I heard they were good to

juice. I had also read several times that cabbage wasn't good to juice raw.

It's so confusing with all the different information out there!!

Hi. No, I don’t know why they leave out kale and spinach. The Gerson Therapy has been around since the 1930's and Dr. Max Gerson had very specific recommendations for his juices and many have been healed on his therapy . Healed from all forms of cancer and many other degenerative diseases. You can look at their website at www.gerson.org . Their phone number is listed there and you can always call and ask questions. They are very helpful. The other juice that is on the Therapy is Carrot/apple. One medium green apple, and the rest carrots for one 8 oz carrot/apple juice. And VERy important of course, is everything must be organic. Hope this is helpful. Kathleen

Kale and spinach are not listed for juicing, but both are on a

"Desirable Foods" list for Gerson. Next to spinach there's a note:

"cooked only." I have been juicing for almost a decade now, mostly

in line with the Gerson approach, but I do think there are some

things that don't make sense. Re: spinach for instance, I believe

Norman was right in saying the cooked version is dangerous

because thecooked oxalic acid forms into stones -- and the raw

version is healthy because the raw oxalic acid balances and supports

elimination -- so I do sometimes use spinach in my juicing. Gerson

was right most of the time -- and certainly in his use of Lugol's --

but not on everything. He thought eliminating all salt would help

reduce build up of salt in the cells (edema) whereas now I believe

the idea is that the use of salt (sea salt of course) will actually

right the cellular imbalance.

Kathleen,

Yes, I don't think he understood that sea salt might be a whole

different story. I don't have his book to check on (I loaned it

out), but I did take a look just now at his daughter's book and

apparently they are still promoting the saltless diet without any

mention of sea salt. I talked about the salt because I had actually

been on a saltless diet for years before I started on the Gerson

therapy, and while the therapy was a life-saver for me in many ways

-- and I do loan his book to people for the treasures therein -- I

think all those sea-saltless years were a big factor, not in causing

my CFS (stress was likely the major cause) but in adding to it and

hindering my recovery.

Re: Does Iodoral cause diarrhea?

Thanks Kathleen. That gives me something

to work with for juicing. I reduced the

Natural Calm I was taking at night and

that seems to have solved the problem with

the diarrhea, so I think I can continue

with the juicing!!

I'm curious about the greens that are

mentioned below. Do you know why they

don't suggest spinach or kale? I always

thought I heard they were good to juice. I

had also read several times that cabbage

wasn't good to juice raw. It's so

confusing with all the different

information out there!!

A lot of people with detox problems also accumulate oxalates which can cause

kidney stones in adults. My 5 year old has high oxalates and we avoid spinach

completely! It's VERY high oxalate. The average low oxalate person doesn't go

over 60mg of oxalates in a day and spinach is between 800-1200mg in one serving!

Severely and painfully high. This is why no one eats Rhubarb leaves, they are

extremely high oxalate.

I think if Dr. Gerson was alive today , he might include Celtic sea salt in his therapy for sure. I do think that those 13 glasses of organic vegetable juice daily most likely supply all the minerals needed for good health. But after we are finished with the full therapy, adding Celtic sea salt is a wise idea. Best from fellow Gerson Person, Kathleen

I just heard Charlotte Gerson interviewed on " The Great Health Debate " . She

emphatically was against every kind of salt, Sea or otherwise. She said Sea

Salt is like sea water and sailors know it will poison them so they die of

thirst on a ship rather than drink it.
