Teaching a Young Child with an Autism Spectrum Disorder in the Natural Environment: What, Why and How March 8, 2008 9-12 Early/Intermediate Learners 1-4 Advanced Learners Roads to Recovery Wellness Center 5383 Suite B Intrastate DriveFairborn, Ohio 45324 This workshop is designed to give parents and professionals an introduction to utilizing the principles of applied behavior analysis/verbal behavior to teach in the natural environment. Participants will have an introduction to related terminology, view video examples of various learners at various skill levels, and be introduced to natural environment lesson plans. Participants will review Skinner's analysis of verbal behavior in regard to effectively teaching language acquisition in the natural environment. In addition, participants will be given multiple, creative examples of effective ideas/strategies for the natural environment. While a review of the basics will be done for those who are new to ABA/VB, those with experience are encouraged to attend as well to broaden ideas and creativity in the natural environment.

Speaker: Flake, BCABA has worked with children with autism spectrum disorders using the principles of applied behavior analysis/verbal behavior since October 2001. During that time she has had the opportunity to work at a year round school for children with autism spectrum disorder in Columbus, OH (May 2005- Oct. 2005) and work at Dr. Carbone's clinic in Valley Cottage, NY (Oct. 2005- May 2006). In May, 2005, Ms. Flake graduated from Northern Kentucky University with a bachelor's degree in elementary and special education. She is a Board Certified Associate Behavior Analyst, completing coursework through University of North Texas. Description of Morning Session: Early/Intermediate Learner in the Natural Environment The morning session will focus on teaching in the

natural environment with an early/intermediate learner. An early learner is a child with limited basic skills, weak echoic, almost no formal mands, few receptive responses outside of the context (following directions), few tacts and intraverbals. An intermediate learner has several mands and some spontaneous, many tacts, some receptive and some RFFC, TFFC and simple intraverbals. Description of Afternoon Session: Advanced Learner in the Natural Environment The afternoon session will focus on teaching in the natural environment with an advanced learner. An advanced learner is a child who has many spontaneous mands, manding for information, complex tacts, TFFC and intraverbals (answering 'wh' questions) *If you need additional assistance determining which session would be more appropriate and applicable to your child/student, please contact me for more information.
