When I am in a good mood, I refer to this as reading the tea-leaves. When I am in a less good mood, I refer to it as reading the chicken entrails. (When I am in a worse mood yet, the phrases get peppered with expletives.) Sometimes, it is really hard to tell what is going on in your own body, but when the signs you are trying to read are in the body of somebody who does not communicate his experience well... ARGH!Personally, I avoid antibiotics like the plague any more, since they have done lasting harm, both to my bowel health & to my husband's. Given that ASD kids pretty much all have gut problems already, I would avoid antibiotics for all but the most urgent problems. There are several herbal preparations that fight various kinds of infections, & I would start with those (Depending on what kind of infection it is.) Some affect gut flora more than others, & you would probably still need probiotics after some of them, but none of them are as hard on your guts as antibiotics. (In fact, this gives you a third option, I think. He could be allergic, & he could be suffering die-off, but gut inflammation is directly linked to autistic symptoms, so the antibiotic could have just disrupted his gut more!) You can work up gradually with the herbals, so you don't get such a big detox reaction (if it's detox.)If it's an allergy situation, he could have a worse reaction if he goes on it again, because now he would be sensitized. (If you try it again, be alert to that possibility.)The back itching could be a skin detox issue, so a detox bath (epsom salts) might help with that. (And it can also be calming for the hyper stuff.) Another mom told me to try inositol (a B vitamin) for OCD, & it did help noticeably. (Not a CURE, by any means, but did reduce it. Large doses, up to 18 grams a day, working up slowly.)Do you have a DAN!-savvy doctor? Or are you going it alone with a regular doc for backup? Do you have an autism email list? Sometimes the experience of others can help (though they were all reading the tea-leaves, too.) I keep coming up with more questions. The longer you have been working on this, the less stuff there should be to die off, but if you are just starting, he could be full of unresolved pathogens... We are going off-topic here. Feel free to write to me off-list, if you'd like to.AnneOn Feb 27, 2011, at 2:15 PM, Ayse Yilmaz wrote: ,You guessed right. My son is autistic. His detox pathways probably not functioning very well because we see die-off after every single antimicrobial. I live in Turkey and sent a blood sample to USA for Nutrogenomics testing. I will hopefully have some ideas on some issues we have with some supplements. My biggest problem in this "recovering my son" journey is that I can not figure out the difference between the die-off reaction and allergies. For instance doctor gave him Augmentin for an infection last week and he became so aggressive, his OCD and hyperactivity increased and also his back was itching all day. I freaked out and stopped it because I thought it could be allergy. And then I thought may be it was a huge die-off. Do any of you happen to know how I can differenciate these two? Thanks
