So I tried iodine on my son about a year

ago (autistic) and he started having kidney stones. Now he has them continuously

about every three months. So I am leary about iodine very much. I also have

weak kidneys any thoughts on the kidneys and iodine?

Child

Thank you for

all the info...this is the first place I recieved info about possible fallout.

I understand that a

dose of Iodoral for a child 2 1/2 yrs old would be 43 mg every 24 hrs till

danger is passed.

My question is

how do I get my grandaughter to take tablets since I don't have lugol's.

Does anyone please

have creative ways to dose children who won't take pills!

Thank you and

God Bless, Patti

Hi Theresa

My guess would be that your son is detoxing heavily through his kidneys and

probably needs support for that area.

I am told that chiropractic can be very helpful for kidney stones (although it

won't do a thing for gallstones...)

Check out an internet search for 'kidney stones baking soda'. Interesting

information has come to light in recent years about the benefits of baking soda

for the kidneys, and recently I ran across some info about oxalates & autism and

somehow this kind of crossed paths with the baking soda thing but I am not up

on all of that. Just passing this along to you to do with whatever you want and

because the detox pathways are important for the iodine protocol.

Mark Sircus MD also has some posts about kidneys and baking soda. He is an

advocate of iodine and is also writing a book for pediatric health care ...

perhaps he has a place where you can post a question.

We started to go that route at one

point. We gave up on doctors when no specialist we went to could tell me why

a 4 year old little boy would have kidney stones like he does. They don’t

think they acid or calcium stones and were totally baffled. They are so small

that he does pass them after tons of pain but we never catch them so we can

investigate further. But going the baking sodium route would make it more

likely to form calcium stones which we were not willing to mess with at his

age. I do know that it didn’t all start until I added in Iodine and

hasn’t stopped yet. So just trying to grasp all the benefits and

downfalls and worries and fears and everything involved in helping our

family. I might try iodine for my thyroid but not sure I would do my son at

this point although I would love to help him as much as I can. I am just leery

and that’s why I am here.

You didn't indicate whether or not you are familiar with oxalates, especially in

regards to autism. This article should be of interest to you and the Organic

Acid Test that they offer seems as though it would be very important in your

sons case: http://www.greatplainslaboratory.com/oxalates/oxal-test.pdf

And, perhaps you could obtain some Chemstrips, like Chemstrip 9, and begin

monitoring his urine yourself - that will give you a start with something you

can do at home. Then perhaps if you could find a way to get at least a basic

urinalysis like what is described here:

http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/urine-test.

But I think the Organic Acid Test is the most important first step for your son.

There is also a Low Oxalates Diet website that gives lists of foods that are

high in oxalates or create oxalates in the body so you might check out that list

to see if any of those foods cause problems for your son that you are aware of.

Your interest in iodine benefitting you and your family is on the right track

.... it's just that finding a path to getting on the track is more complicated

for some than others and that's where we end up straying " off topic " a bit in

order to attempt to help others overcome their obstacles to be able to use the

iodine protocol.

I did check that all out, my son is also

autistic and self limits his food. We are lucky to get what food we can in

him.

He was very toxic and we have gone through

two rounds of chelation, biomedical treatment for biofilm in the gut.

Although he is doing better with eating he still is limited. Will recheck the

low oxalate foods again and see if there is something I can do.

It is possible that oxalates are only detrimental when the food is

cooked.

Theresa,

I have to encourage you to join the trying_low_oxalates group and ask Suan

Owens to help you. I'm sure she would be very interested in a child who is

actually suffering from kidney stones. My son has been on the Low Oxalate diet

for less than a year and he is doing fantastic. The small stones are more than

likely oxalate crystals, and they are very painful to pass--but there are

supplements to help ease his pain, and this group will help you tremendously!

take care,

Amy

I would add that a person shouldn't borrow trouble ... oxalates are only a

problem for some people.

Theresa .I guess when you say you added iodine you mean iodine and the companion nutrients? If so how much C and what type and magnesium what type and how much? From: Theresa <gates78@...>iodine Sent: Sun, 13 March, 2011 0:50:24Subject: RE:

Check out an internet search for 'kidney stones baking

soda'. Interesting information has come to light in recent years about the

benefits of baking soda for the kidneys, and recently I ran across some info

about oxalates & autism and somehow this kind of crossed paths with the

baking soda thing but I am not up on all of that. Just passing this along to

you to do with whatever you want and because the detox pathways are important

for the iodine protocol.

Mark Sircus MD also has some posts about kidneys and baking soda. He is an

advocate of iodine and is also writing a book for pediatric health care ...

perhaps he has a place where you can post a question.

It was iodine with added vitamins and

minerals already in it. Can’t tell you for sure that was almost two years

ago. May have been a coincidence that the iodine supplements were started

the same time of onset of problems but not sure and scared to try again seeing

his health issues. He is Gluten/dairy/soy free. We try to stay away from preservatives

and no dyes. Low sugar.

My brain is fairly unreliable these days but I do believe oxalates occur in

uncooked vegetables. They suggest that one not drink the water that the

vegetables are cooked in because the oxalates go into the water.

Theresa,If he is eating a limited diet, there's a big chance that he has become intolerant to something that he is eating often. I had my entire family IGg tested last year, and again this year. Everyone improved, except my special needs son who self limits his food. He came out intolerant to the things that he ate most of the time. I removed those things, and he is eating a wider variety of foods. He still has a long way to go though. :-/We also did the Organix Urine test and a stool test. My son does not have a problem with oxalates, but I know several people that have found relief on the low oxalate diet.Hugs to you. Joan,

's argument wasn't about the existence of oxalates in a cooked

or uncooked vegetable such as spinach -- he assumed (correctly, I

think) presence in both. However, he believed the unheated oxalates

did only good things for the body (such as encouraging peristalis in

the digestive track) and the uncooked did damage (such as the

creation of kidney stones).

> uncooked vegetable such as spinach -- he assumed (correctly, I think)

Abstract

Approximately 75% of all kidney stones are composed primarily of calcium

oxalate, and hyperoxaluria is a primary risk factor for this disorder. Nine

types of raw and cooked vegetables were analyzed for oxalate using an enzymatic

method. There was a high proportion of water-soluble oxalate in most of the

tested raw vegetables. Boiling markedly reduced soluble oxalate content by

30 & #8722;87% and was more effective than steaming (5 & #8722;53%) and baking (used

only for potatoes, no oxalate loss). An assessment of the oxalate content of

cooking water used for boiling and steaming revealed an approximately 100%

recovery of oxalate losses. The losses of insoluble oxalate during cooking

varied greatly, ranging from 0 to 74%. Because soluble sources of oxalate appear

to be better absorbed than insoluble sources, employing cooking methods that

significantly reduce soluble oxalate may be an effective strategy for decreasing

oxaluria in individuals predisposed to the development of kidney stones.

I wish my brain worked better because I've read about kidney stones recently but

can't remember where. I think oxalates is not the reason for kidney stones. It

might make them worse once the condition has started but there is another

metabolic cause. Sorry, I can't produce anything to verify that.

I am in the soup camp these days, try to eat as much homemade soup as possible.

Soup aids digestion, especially homemade bone broths. The advantage to reading

everything, all points of view, is one comes to the conclusion that we are

supposed to eat everything, cooked and raw. How one does that depends on what

their bodies need, for example, if you have lyme, you want to eat phytates,

otherwise one should try to avoid phytates.

I'm not going to continue posting to this thread but I would like to say is this

subject is far too complex to just focus on oxalates. If I were allergic to

them, I would get some NMT (NeuroModulation Technique) or BodyTalk to overcome

the allergy. DE or activated charcoal could be an option to encourage

peristalis if peristalis is the real problem. I know someone who kid's villi

didn't work properly because of a neurological problem. It wouldn't be a good

thing to overdose on oxalates if there were another underlying problem. I don't

know the full story but something sounds out of whack to me.

Yes, Joan you are correct, kidney stones do have another metabolic cause. Conns disease (which is high aldosterone secretion from the adrenals) causes kidney stones.

We're doing a low-oxalate diet right now and my 4 y.o. autistic daughter is passing oxalates by the loads.  She had one day when her urine was cloudy for a few days and I almost fell on the floor when I shone I flashlight up to her potty (I was actually looking for the bigger oxalate bits that she'd been passing) and discovered that the cloudiness in her urine was actually millions of very fine white crystals!  Oxalates are also coming out in her urine in the form of slightly larger reddish-brown bits.  We've seen some pretty good gains from doing low oxalates (it seems to be helping to lift my daughter's apraxia).

From what I understood of 's post in the Trying_Low_Oxalates group, I gathered that the relationship between iodine and oxalates is that when the oxalates move out of cells, it allows iodine to move in.  I know I'm oversimplifying it and missing some details about how it happens.  When cells are full of oxalates, iodine can't get in?  Or something along those lines.

Vit C supplements are also known to convert to oxalates inside cells, so if there's an oxalate problem, Vit C supps might aggrevate the oxalate problem more?  For this reason, I stopped supplementing Vit C.  I've heard that quercetin is another oxalate-friendly antioxidant that people with oxalate issues can use.

Arginine is known to relieve some of the pain during oxalate dumps.

Am I understanding this correctly? By doing a low oxalate diet will get the body to pass oxalates? Or is there something else you are doing in conjunction with the diet? A cleanse...... Iodine.....

This was discussed at the Iodine professional conference I attended. I only remember that the potassium in Iodoral is very low and I don't believe there was a concern for kidney issues. I can check with a doctor or two that uses it to see if there is consensus.

Child dose..

Thank you for all the info...this is the first place I recieved info about possible fallout.

I understand that a dose of Iodoral for a child 2 1/2 yrs old would be 43 mg every 24 hrs till danger is passed.

My question is how do I get my grandaughter to take tablets since I don't have lugol's.

Does anyone please have creative ways to dose children who won't take pills!

Thank you and God Bless, Patti
