Guest guest
Dear Friend of ASO: Hope you are all enjoying Spring Break! There will be no ASO DIGEST next week - March 31. The DIGEST will resume on April 7, 2008. NEWS FROM ASO Governor Strickland thanks, addresses MRDD Futures Committee There is no better way to start off an important meeting than with remarks from the Governor. The ODMRDD Futures Committee, including ASO Co-President Barb Yavorcik, was honored and delighted to see Governor Ted Strickland walk into the Futures Committee meeting March 20 at the Riffe Center in Columbus, and offer comments commending the group for their months of collaboration, and reminding all that he is looking forward to positive results for the nearly 80,000 Ohioans receiving MRDD services. He began, “Not only do I commend you for your work and commitment, but I also appreciate that you didn’t always agree with each other on what needs to be done. That shows me that the right mix of people were put together. Every point of view deserves the right to be heard and respected, and that is what I see has happened here.†The Governor went on to note that the Futures Committee membership was selected to be inclusive of stakeholder groups, and illustrates a broad base of different perspectives from which to develop recommendations. He added, “Including the people who will be affected by the decisions arrived at in this process is clearly in line with the way we plan to Turnaround Ohio.†In the Final Report, distributed to the group in final draft form March 20, the Futures Committee’s 31 recommendations have been distilled into action items designed to improve the accessibility of services and supports to Ohioans, with disabilities, statewide. Addressing the Committee members, Governor Strickland emphasized that, “One of the main accomplishments of any group put in place to accomplish real change is not only to determine what those changes are, but to make sure that the resulting opportunities are accessible to those who need them.†He continued, “Especially in the MRDD community, this is an important charge, and one that you have taken well in hand.†Director followed the Governor’s comments, thanking him for the ongoing support shown by the Strickland Administration for the ODMRDD goals set forth early last year, and helping guide the overall strategy and decision-making proicesses. Those goals are: · Less complex service delivery, with fair and logical payment systems· Good stewardship of limited resources;· Quality outcomes, through a combination of people and processes;· Service delivery models designed in response to choices made by the people served, in alliance with community supports;· A system-wide vision developed with stakeholders. All five of the goals will -- in conjunction with the Futures Committee recommendations contained in the report -- be the basis of how Governor Strickland and the General Assembly will evaluate the performance of the ODMRDD in 2008. Answering the question, “Where do we go from here?,†Director replied, “What happens next is that an implementation plan will be developed in line with the work done to- date by the Committee, and that implementation initiative will be shared with the field as soon as it is ready. He added, “Be assured we will be calling upon you as seasoned members of the Futures Committee to help us carry out this initiative.†The Final Report will be posted at http://odmrdd.state.oh.us/futures/odmrdd.htm by March 31. Unable to quickly "get the gist" of what is happening, a day at school may be a frustrating series of events, filled with directions that are misunderstood directions and failed interactions with peers. Understandably, a child with ASD may be attracted to pursuits in line with his/her strengths, i.e. topics and activities that are logical, meaningful, and thus, hold greater promise for success. This fun and practical workshop uses lecture, demonstration, and activities to explore instructional strategies that directly address the core deficits in ASD through utilization of everyone's strengths. This includes: 1) a research based rationale; 2) a very new FAST TRACK to quickly learn/review the Social Stories 10.0â„¢, the most recent defining criteria and guidelines for writing and implementing a Social Story, with demonstration of Social Storiesâ„¢ in practice, and 3) social and emotional learning strategies that systematically model and teach friendship concepts and skills. In response, an Autism Response Team coordinator will contact the family to get additional information so that the 100 Day Kit can be tailored to include resources specific to their child's age and location. The family will receive a binder with pertinent information, as well as contact information for an Autism Response Team coordinator in their region who has been trained specifically to answer questions they may have. The turn-around time for a new kit will be approximately one week from the date of the initial request. Members of the Autism Response Team will follow up with families four months after they receive the 100 Day Kit to see how they are doing, answer any questions they may have, and solicit their feedback. Families may also download the text of the kit without registering – and without personalization – and use Autism Speaks' Family Services Resource Guide to access local resource information. Cutler, Jr,Self-Advocate and Mentor Morton Ann Gernsbacher University of WisconsinDarlene Hanson HansonCommunication Service LLC Christi Kasa-Hendrickson University of Colorado at Colorado Springsa Kluth Consultant Overview of Series Learn about new research and information being documented on people who have the severest communication impairments and autism. Explore ideas for addressing needs in comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary. Get answers to several commonly held, but often erroneous assumptions about autism. Our series will conclude with a session given by a parent and self-advocate. Hear from them about life experiences. Session 1: Building Communication through Education, Literacy, and Support... Presenters: Darlene Hanson, Hanson Communication Service LLC and Christi Kasa-Hendrickson, University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Date: Friday April 4 Time:4:00 - 5:30 pm EST 3:00 - 4:30pm CST 2:00 - 3:30pm MST 1:00 - 2:30pm PST We will talk about FC in the session, but want to spring board off the new research and information documenting that people who have the severest communication impairments, and autism, have literacy, learn, and perhaps score so low because they can't communicate. (Not such a new idea to many of us, but at least someone else is writing it down). Session 2: The Science of Autism: Beyond the Myths and Misconceptions Presenter: Morton Ann Gernsbacher, University of Wisconsin Date: Monday, April 21 Time: 1:00-2:30pm EST 12:00 - 1:30pm CST 11:00 - 12:30pm MST 10:00- 11:30am PST Scientific and societal interest in autism has burgeoned in the past decade, as documented by over 20 million websites, over 10,000 entries in PubMed, and a weekly focus on autism by the national media. With this surge of scientists and society turning their attention toward autism, it becomes exceedingly important to distinguish uninformed stereotype from scientific reality, to move beyond myths and misconceptions. In this presentation I shall present the science to answer several commonly held, but often erroneous assumptions, for example: Is autism an attachment disorder? Do autistic individuals really lack a theory of mind? Is there an epidemic of autism? Does ABA therapy cure autism? What is the most promising interpersonal intervention? Session 3: "A Land We Can Share": Teaching Literacy to Students with Autism Presenter: a Kluth, Consultant Date: Monday, April 28 Time: 2:00 - 3:30pm EST 1:00 - 2:30pm CST 12:00 - 1:30pm MST 11:00am - 12:30pm PST Come and learn about how we can give all students- including those with significant disabilities- access to the literate community. Dr. Kluth will explain how all students can be given learning opportunities that are rich, challenging, and meaningful. Participants will also learn strategies for including and supporting students with autism labels in reading, writing, speaking, and listening activities. Specifically, we will explore ideas for addressing needs in comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary. Session 4: Getting A Life: A 50 Year Personal Retrospective of Autism Presenters: Barbara C. Cutler, EdD, mother/educational consultant, and W.P. Cutler, Jr, Self-Advocate and Mentor Date: Monday, May 5 Time: 2:00 - 3:30pm EST 1:00 - 2:30pm CST 12:00 - 1:30pm MST 11:00 - 12:30pm PST Drawing on Rob's diagnoses, life experience and communications as well as Barbara's experience as parent, advocate and consultant, these two will review autism from the late 1950's to present day. The presentation will touch on issues raised in earlier sessions of the series including education, family support, communication, movement difficulties, etc. AUTISM SPEAKS HOSTS “ROCK ‘TIL IT STOPS†BENEFIT CONCERT AT THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME AND MUSEUM TO SUPPORT LOCAL AND NATIONAL INITIATIVES Legendary Musician Stills and Cleveland’s Own Stanley Headline the performance Evening Will Honor Local and National Advocates: Norma Lerner, Ratner, Eileen McShea and and Stills NEW YORK, NY (March 21, 2008) -- Autism Speaks will host a special one-night-only benefit concert, featuring performances by rock legends Stills and Cleveland’s own Stanley, at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio, on Saturday, April 12 from 6:30 p.m. to 12 a.m. “Rock ‘Til It Stops†will be an evening of food, fun and music as the Cleveland community joins together to raise awareness about autism and funds to support Autism Speaks’ research, education and outreach initiatives. Autism spectrum disorders are diagnosed in one in 150 children in the United States, affecting four times as many boys as girls. The diagnosis of autism has increased tenfold in the last decade. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have called autism a national public health crisis whose cause and cure remain unknown. About Autism Speaks Autism Speaks is dedicated to increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders, to funding research into the causes, prevention and treatments for autism, and to advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. It was founded in February 2005 by Suzanne and Bob , the grandparents of a child with autism. Bob is Vice Chairman, General Electric, and served as chief executive officer of NBC for more than twenty years. To learn more about Autism Speaks, please visit www.autismspeaks.org .
