Guest guest
Peary, The article I recommended is about three pages long and will not take hours to read. I always recommend that people with Hashis read this article because it is the only explanation of what causes the disease that I have found so far apart from the vague things that doctors say like, "stress", "pregnancy", "genetic predisposition", etc. It explains why taking iodine on it's own may cause a Hashi attack whereas taking iodine with selenium will not. This is an important point. There is a difference between just taking iodine and following the iodine protocol. I know that it is difficult to wade through all the info about thyroid disorders when you have brain fog, but if you are going to read something, I think that "Facts about Iodine and Auto-immune Thyroiditis" should be it. I found that my brain fog lifted pretty fast after starting the IP. In fact I even stopped taking T4 for about six months and didn't notice much deterioration in my condition (which just goes to show how useless it is!). I didn't get improvement in my aching muscles and burning feet, but because I could think straight I was able to tackle these problems. After 6 months on iodine I got my iron levels sorted out and plucked up courage to take some T3 (which is almost as maligned as iodine) and things have been getting better ever since. Iodine has not been the answer to all my health problems but it has got me out of what I considered to be a "danger zone" and got my mind back. Overall it has been extremely beneficial and I do not consider that I have suffered any drawbacks apart from a couple of stains on my table cloths. It seems there are many of you that have benefited from iodine supplementation but perhaps there are other factors that are aiding the improvements too..ie: gluten avoidance, selenium uptake etc... I really can't spend hours reading protocols and additional information relating to this.I just don't have the time or energy.I hope that doesn't annoy others reading but I'm just so tired of it all and have awful brainfog. Guest guest
Thanks Jess, That was very informative!! I had no idea!! So, do you think all Hashi people should stay away from gluten or should I go get tested 1st to see if I have a problem? Would I get tested for Celiac disease? Would I have symptoms if I had a problem? We eat A LOT of whole wheat and soy sauce and just recently we decided to start making our own bread from wheat, so now I'm concerned about this decision. Guest guest
All gluten intolerance does not manifest as celiac disease. I wouldn't bother with the test. You can still have a problem with gluten without testing positive for celiac.Hate to say it, but it is probably a good idea to go gluten-free for a while, & see how you feel (once you are done with the DTs. Guest guest
I was just tested for many food allergies. I was loosing my hair so I decided to eliminate gluten from my diet and the hair loss has stopped. My blood test did not show positive for celiac but many folks are gluten sensitive. A gluten free diet seems a little tricky at first but it really isn't. Guest guest
Some insist no grains are good for us. The book, The Primal Blueprint outlines a cave woman diet which would not have included any grains. Gluten is not just in wheat so going gluten free means more than just avoiding wheat. You'll need to become informed and know that wheat is everywhere so label reading and restaurant item scrutiny is essential to avoid it. Many find that health issues they would never have thought as "wheat" related cease when they give it up. It does take about 3 months though supposedly to clear out. I resisted doing it for my hashi's since I had no digestive issues or "outward signs" of gluten sensitivity but have found my antibodies consistently lowering over the last six months Janet iodine From: shanenchar@...Date: Wed, 16 Mar 2011 19:44:50 +0000Subject: Re: Iodine..who has truly benefited? Guest guest
DTs are detox tremors - typically a term used in conjunction with detoxing from alcohol and/or major drugs.  However, it was used in this context as a joke. As in it is hard to give up gluten and we do in some ways act addicted to it and therefore have withdrawal symptoms when quitting. With food the withdrawal is typically food cravings, feeling tired, headaches, maybe some GI issues, that sort of thing - but not actual DTs - thus the joke.  The good news is once you come out the other side most people feel considerably better. People often have no idea the extent of the symptoms they have/had in relation to something like gluten until the stop consuming it. Once it is out of the system and the gut and intestines have a chance to heal people often feel better - and see other improvements in their health as they are better able to digest their food and utilize the nutrients in the food. Including IODINE.  In fact off on an iodine tangent we pondered previously on this list. I would wonder if this plays into why some people have better luck with liquid iodine versus the iodoral. iodoral counts on being absorbed in the intestines BUT if you have intestinal problems which impact your ability to absorb nutrients - say inflamation from eating gluten or UC or Crohn's with active inflamtion - maybe you are not absorbing as much of the iodine if you take it via iodoral than if you took it as a liquid and it mostly absorbed in the stomach.  Just a thought.  Jaxi On Wed, Mar 16, 2011 at 2:46 PM, shanenchar <shanenchar@...> wrote: What are DTs?  I didn't get it > > > > > >> > > > > >> > > > > > I too am interested in hearing from those who have Hashi's> > and take iodine. Guest guest
Sorry. Bad joke. People tend to be addicted to gluten, & many find it hard to give up -- like an alcoholic finds it hard to give up booze. Some people find it quite easy, but for others, there is an uncomfortable "kicking the habit" phase.AnneOn Mar 16, 2011, at 12:46 PM, shanenchar wrote: What are DTs? Guest guest
Grains are not really healthy. Avoid bread. Wheat, like, soy , has been touted as healthy.."the staff of life", but, it causes destruction of the gut and leads to auto-immune diseases...cancer, arthritis, thyroiditis, ms, ibs, etc. One of the reasons it is so difficult to stop is, just like dairy, it causes morphine like substances in the body..hard addiction! There is a lot of scientific info from Dr. Zagon's research.Nonie > iodine > From: shanenchar@...> Date: Wed, 16 Mar 2011 19:44:50 +0000> Subject: Re: Iodine..who has truly benefited?> > Good grief!! Guest guest
Because we love nice, highly risen bread, they have bred wheat to have a much higher gluten content than the original varieties had. That leads to too much gluten, which can cause damage. We make our homemade bread with spelt, because the gluten content is much lower. It works well! Donna in IL Good grief!! Guest guest
Thanks for your response and thank you for your patience with me on this one. I am still confused about the antibodies. Doesn't your thyroid medicine keep the antibodies down? And, what happens when your antibodies are increased? Thanks again! > Many find that health issues they would never have thought as " wheat " related cease when they give it up. Guest guest
Oops ... right too true ... I have a very clear mental picture of what they look like and have thus affixed that to the term.  Amazing how the brain works to organize info.Delirium tremens - latin for " shaking frenzy " Good catch.  JaxiOn Wed, Mar 16, 2011 at 6:00 PM, <jprocure@...> wrote: Actually, DT stands for Delerium Tremens. Guest guest
Donna, It isn't the amount of gluten, any amount causes damage. People used to die young long before wheat growing in Northern climates caused higher levels of gluten. There is a lot of research. No one should eat gluten grains if they wish to be healthy. It is actually the gliadin that causes the damage. There is more and more research on this.Nonie iodine From: Donna@...Date: Wed, 16 Mar 2011 17:53:29 -0500Subject: RE: Re: Iodine..who has truly benefited? Guest guest
Yes, and DT's stands for " delirium tremors " , I believe (1st husband was an alcoholic and I became familiar with such terms...) It's the real bad physical withdrawl, complete with shaking, that they can have when they suddenly quit the alcohol. > > > > > > All gluten intolerance does not manifest as celiac disease. Guest guest
The great milk debate rages on!Raw milk is significantly different from homogenized, pasteurized milk; organic milk is significantly different from commercial milk; grass fed milk is significantly different from grain fed milk; milk from Jersey ( & other traditional) cows is significantly different from the Holstein & other breeds used by most modern dairies. So I believe that raw, organic, grass fed, Jersey milk is good food, & pasteurized, homogenized, grain fed Holstein milk full of hormones is bad for you. But there is a lot of disagreement on that point, with high passions on both sides.AnneOn Mar 16, 2011, at 10:30 PM, AlinaN wrote: Hi Nonie, What about raw milk? Is it bad as well and why?
