Beverly,

That was my thought also, except that I switched to a kind that is yeast-based

and now I have no problem. And I continue to take it on an empty stomach. I

don't know what the " correct " way is, but so far this is working for me.

be taken with food.  Or after a meal.  Am I wrong?  Maybe taking it on an empty

stomach is what caused the distress.

This is set as a safety factor as selenium can be toxic if dose is too high.

Some in a very high sel area would be over taking 400, but in general is safe.

Most recommend 200, but up to 400 seems ok.

Over 400 one should have it monitored/tested.

The future 'real medicine' will automatically test sel levels as a normal part of healthcare.

They say it is important to take 400 micrograms of selenium per day. So, I am wondering that if you are taking iodine, is it better to take more than 400 per day? Any information on this?

Jag Jag,

Take a look at this link:

Notice how high the values are in this animal?

Organic and grass fed of course.

Isn't this amazing interms of values?

We could throw away the tablets?

Did you notice how much selenium is in lamb's liver.

a 100g portion?

111 mcg that is 159 % at Daily Values.

200 microgams is my understanding, Ann - not sure if others do anything

different. Lamberts selenium is used by some people.

I also take Lamberts Selenium 200mcg daily. This is prescribed on the NHS and

the pharmacist faxes a special request to order it. Therefore I can assume that

most people buy it themselves, even though it is prescribable. It was my NHS

consultant who said to try it actually. This has been one of my major

achievements during my rigmarole.

I would say I have had incremental improvements in functioning through taking

it, so there is nothing to loose.

By the way if you can only find Selenium ACE (in a blister strip) the dose is

far less and take two a day.

Hi, Selenium helps with T4 to t3 conversion. Do not take more than 200mcg daily. How are your zinc levels? this is also vital for conversion. You can do a quick check by sucking a zinc gluconate tablet- if it tasted chalky you are low, if you get a taste after 30 secs borderline, but if you go yeuck! immeniately then you're fine. try again after a month of supplementation and you'll see what I mean about a yucky taste. thyroid treatment From: thomasann10@...Date: Tue, 11 May 2010 05:57:52 -0700Subject: Selenium

Hello ,

Glad to hear Omega has helped with your dry skin - how much do you take? My

skin's still dry :(

I take 200mg (daily) with my NDT as I haven't heard anything saying that it

should be taken separately. There's good information in the FILES section.

It's under the heading SELENIUM.

Hi ,

We all need to take 200mcgs Selenium daily with food to help the

mainly inactive thyroid hormone thyroxine T4) convert to the active thyroid

hormone triiodothyronine (T3), and yes, it is OK to take with your thyroid meds

and it will not cause you to go hyperthyroid.

Luv - Sheila

I had a post a while back and I was talking to Sheila regarding what vitamins

to take. I have started on Omega and this has helped with the dryness of my

skin but do you all take selenium. If so is this ok to take with thyroid meds

also would it interfere at all or make me go hyper.

Hi howie, Selenium is vital to T4 to T3 conversion- and is short in UK siols, so most of us will be deficient- it is therefore a good thing to supplement along with zinc. > thyroid treatment > From: howsthatthen2@...> Date: Thu, 25 Nov 2010 09:00:36 +0000> Subject: Re: Selenium> > > > > >> > Hi> > > > I had a post a while back and I was talking to Sheila regarding what vitamins to take. I get my selenium from vitacost.com, the NSI brand. I actually find it easier to take most things separately, instead of as a mixture, because it is easier to add them all up instead of multiples that have a little of this and that. Donna in IL I take AOR Multi Basic which features " Se-methylselenocysteine (SeMC), the most effective cancer-fighting form of selenium available " (55mcg).I do however want to reach the suggested level of selenium to support Iodine. To just take more of the Multi would duplicate certain nutrients. So I prefer another source. I found a couple of selenium products at Swansons. That would be a simple way to get the required amount.Any suggestions ? Besides ATP Co Factors are there any products that contain multiple support items ?Be well,

Hello Donna,

That makes sense. I will go that route. Easier to keep track..

Thank you,

Yes, and , Swanson's and Vitacost are two very good sources. The

NSI brand at Vitacost is very high quality and great value. Both are

trusted sources.

I was going to say the same thing Donna said. It's fine to take a

multiple, then add the additional things we need individually. That way we

custom fit our needs.

You should take thyroxine an hour before food and take 200mcgs

Selenium with food Anita. If you haven't tried it, try taking your

levothyroxine when you go to bed. Small trials have shown that sufferers sleep

better, and feel better when they wake in the morning.

Luv - Sheila

can some one verify if you can take selenium

and thyroxine together or do you take it well apart , i have read that you can

take it together but i would value your advice thanks so much anita

How does one know if one needs more selenium?

I take 200mcg/day. I'm not having any major trouble and we're over 150mg of

lugol's right now.

We have increased rather enthusiastically over the last two days. I am noticing

one thing...a very sore breast. It feels like mastitis. Could this be iodine?

I do not usually have breast pain.

Iodine can change the breasts. I was always told (back when I was dumb enough to have mammograms) that my breasts were unusually dense. When I started iodine, they softened up. There were some twinges associated with that. It reminded me of early pregnancy, when the breasts go through changes. My guess would be that there was something going on in your breast that the iodine is correcting. I suspect it is temporary. Try not to worry about it. (If it persists, maybe you should revisit the issue.)AnneOn Mar 16, 2011, at 11:52 AM, jprocure@... wrote: How does one know if one needs more selenium? I take 200mcg/day. A few of us found that when getting to iodine dosages over 100 mgs our female hormones went whacky. It was like estrogen dominance but for a few they tested and it was progesterone. This was true for me. My progesterone levels increased. I was on BHrt so I just decreased my dose. You may want to check your hormones.

I'm doing 50mg oral progesterone and 20mg cream daily. I too, noticed that when

I increased my iodine significantly, all heck broke loose with the cycle, etc.

You lowered your progesterone when that happened?

I prefer Methylselenocysteine. The recommended amounts are 200 - 400 mcg (that's micrograms and not milligrams).

How much selenium is the recommended daily dose to go with our thyroid protocol, 200 or 400 mg. daily? How much is everyone taking here?Blessings, Margaret
