Dear Friends and Colleagues –

AUTISM IN ACTION – ILLINOIS

Among the misguided “isms” of 20th Century ideology only autism survives. Fascism, communism, McCarthyism - met and defeated. Autism fueled by the same narrow-minded, thought-obscuring principles Bertrand deemed the “philosophy of savages,” prospers.

Sprung from the same stillborn schools of thought Autism is an “ism” which attempts to define and instill a belief system over any and all objections. Autism is not a subject which tolerates the idea of honest debate anymore than Stalin welcomed criticism of collective farming.

By design autism is self-defeating. Purveyors of autism only recognize failure and defeat. In their worldview autism is both a starting and ending point with no causes, no cure, and no hope.

Spreading “isms” of Autism

In California the vaccine-oligarchy attempts to circumvent elected officials to add vaccines to the immunization schedule.

In Texas a governor mandates the HPV vaccine for all female children prior to admission to the sixth grade.

In land children are rounded up under threat of police action, a smiling judge overseeing the makeshift “interment/vaccine” camp.

New Jersey suffering from the highest rate of autism in the country, ignoring the objections of concerned parents, professionals, and other states adds flu shots to the vaccine schedule.

The Time Has Come To Change Everything

“Isms” are bully-boys which flourish in social climates of fear. Bound to hierarchical structures of authority the failing of “isms” is the saving need for change.

We need to change the struggle for education and social services to a cooperative environment of agreement. We need to change the potential of poverty to supportive structures which bear the financial burdens. We need to change the 90% divorce rate and keep families together. We need to change and help mothers who are facing early onset diseases get the medical attention they need to stay healthy. We need to change the selling of science, the institutional hubris of organizations and the pharmaceutical practice of medicine. We need to change elected officials to public servants who are part of the solution. We need to change the condescending looks of strangers to smiling faces of concerned citizens. We need to change media’s apathy to honest inquiry. We need to change the Department of Justice from a path of injustice to justice. We need to change the role of the CDC, NIH, IOM, and FDA from agencies of denial to agencies of accountability.

We need to change the social climate by shifting every aspect and assumption of autism from the institutionalized version of failure to a vision of success. Given expectations of failing our children are no longer acceptable.

The Right Way To Autism

Democracy must begin at home, and its home is the neighborly community.

-- Dewey

For seventy years we have seen the wrong way of autism - a social elite and agenda focused on failing upward -- rewarding individuals and organizations whose self-fulfilling interests swaddle our children in cocoons of failure.

The injustice of autism ends when we exercise our collective will to change it. The calculus of consent ends with our explicit involvement in the education and advocacy of elected officials.

We are therefore delighted to announce the “First Annual Autism One: Autism & Legislative Partnership" Program.

This year we are inviting every mayor and state legislator in Illinois to attend special programs designed to educate lawmakers and city officials to understand and help children with autism and their families.

The program for mayors, public health and other officials will be held Thursday, May 22. The program for state legislators will be held Saturday, May 24. Both programs will be held at the Westin O’Hare Hotel, site of the Autism One 2008 Conference.

The programs will feature everything from understanding the impact of autism in Illinois, to an overview of biomedical treatments, by Dr. Martha Herbert, to implementing best practices at the state and municipal level.

Our friends are out there quietly serving their constituents. Our job is finding them, educating them, and supporting them in moving past the historic failed “isms” of autism to the grace and nobility of saving children and ending autism.

As always, please let us know if you have any questions, comments, suggestions, or ideas. Thank you and Happy 2008!

Our Best,

Ed and Teri Arranga
