Guest guest
Lori, It's normal for one's TSH to go up when taking iodine. Too bad your ND doesn’t know that and had you stop . Sea vegetables are not a good source for iodine as they are contaminated with arsenic and other heavy metals. Dr. Mercola does not know what he is talking about when it comes to iodine, in my opinion. Have you read the New Members doc that was sent to you when you joined? The rise in TSH when taking iodine is explained there (# 14 under Commonly Asked Quesstions..might be a good idea for you to print that out and share with your ND)as are many other subjects that will help educate. Best, Kathleen Dr. Mercola's article regarding iodine and Lugol's - I just read an article by Dr. Mercola on iodine. I enjoy what he writes andfind much to be very informative and well written. He discusses the need foriodine, talks about halides and bromides, but states that Lugol's can causemore thyroid trouble for those with hypothyroidism. This is the statement Dr. Mercola makes. He also cites studies in hisarticle.<< Please avoid using Lugol's solution or iodine, as that can actuallyworsen your thyroid condition. >>I know my TSH went up and that is why I stopped using it for a little bitper my ND's recommendation. He suggests eating more of the natural form ofiodine, particularly sea vegetables.I started Lugol's again this morning and after I read the article from Dr.Mercola, I am very confused.http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2009/10/20/Signs-Symptoms-and-Solutions-for-Poor-Thyroid-Function.aspx - Can you please advise?Thank you!Lori
Guest guest
Hi Kathleen, Yes, I did read that before and I am going to have my Free T3 and Free T4 checked as well when they do another thyroid test. I also wondered if that isn’t why that happened. (Do you know if having a higher TSH will cause fertility related problems if the Free T3 and Free T4 are fine? The TSH should be much lower than what it is right now for any fertility related problems.) The only reason that I backed down for a little bit was that I was very stressful when taking a higher amount of Lugols and was having such a difficult time sleeping. I think doing a proper iodine test (not the blood test my ND ran) would be a better thing to do. I agree about the kelp/sea vegetables. I worry about the contamination. I did start on the Lugols yesterday anyway and I am going to work myself back up – just much slower this time! I think it’s just that not all ND’s agree about the iodine and I read the comments that others left about Dr. Mercola’s report. I’m sure he is not always 100% accurate. Thanks Kathleen! Guest guest
All sea veggies are NOT contaminated with heavy metals and arsenic, though some certainly can be. Get from a reliable source, like those in Maine and N. California as opposed to China and Japan. And preferably from sources that test for such things. As far as foods go, some are very good sources of iodine and other things. Blessings, Surya Dr. Mercola's article regarding iodine and Lugol's - I just read an article by Dr. Mercola on iodine. Guest guest
Lori-- The point about the TSH rise in response to iodine is that it is not an indicator of ill health, NOR an indicator of fertility. -- At 03:10 PM 3/20/2011, you wrote: >Hi Kathleen, > >Yes, I did read that before and I am going to have my Free T3 and Free T4 >checked as well when they do another thyroid test. Guest guest
I’ve had fertility related problems due to a higher TSH and that’s when I began taking thyroid medication (a little over a year and a half ago). I know doctors like to see it under a certain number in order for pregnancy to occur. My temps were also decreasing when I was on Lugols last time. Initially, I was feeling warmer, but then, my feet and hands got very cold all the time. Do you know why that would have been? Since I’m not getting any younger, that’s why I worry. I also miscarried about a year and a half ago and it could have been thyroid related at that time. I might never know for certain. Thank you . Guest guest
I will take a look again. I do recall reading that the TSH could go higher. I just wasn’t certain if that had anything to do with fertility since doctors like to see a TSH under a certain number for pregnancy to occur. Basically, if the TSH is higher, but the Free T3 and T4 are fine, would that rule out the problem related to being able to obtain pregnancy? Even my ND was concerned when she saw my TSH was high and one of the reasons she told me to not take too much of the Lugols. Thanks Kathleen!
