Lugol's solution, 7% iodine - 1 fluid ounce

NOTE:  Due to heavy sales, shipments may be delayed for several days

Lugol's solution is a solution of iodine and iodide in water, and is used as a topical disinfectant and antiseptic, an emergency water disinfectant, as an iodine source for saltwater aquariums, and for other uses.  It can also be taken to cure iodine deficiency and to keep the thyroid from absorbing iodine-131, a highly radioactive isotope of iodine common in nuclear fallout.  Invented in 1829 by the French physician Lugol, it has been tried and true for 180 years.

This solution comes in an amber glass bottle with an eye dropper.  Ingredients are iodine, potassium iodide, and purified water.  Each full eyedropper (approximately .75 milliliters) contains about 48 milligrams of iodine and 96 milligrams of potassium iodide.  Total iodine per drop is approximately 7.25mg.  The iodine solution can gradually corrode the rubber in the eyedropper, so a teflon-lined cap is supplied for storage.

I see in the files that 2 drops of Lugol's 5% is about 12.5 mg iodine/iodide.

I have the 7% solution from the full orchestra. Do I use straight math (divide by 5, mulitply by 7) or " chemistry " math (which I don't know)?

Straight math gives me 17.5 mg in 2 drops (8.75 mg in one drop).

,

Check your iodine as I have only seen full orchestra's 7% as tincture of iodine

not Lugols. The tincture is for topical application only, not for ingesting.

Thanks, Dianne, it's labeled " Lugol's solution " . Maybe he's selling different

concentrations due to the run on iodine. I ordered just before he ran out of

stock.
