Guest guest
Hi All, My 8 yr old chi had her yearly blood work done (only T4)for thyroid and the vet has sent me home with Levothyroxine, liver support, as her enzymes were high and antibiotic also. Do vets do full panels (T3) for animals? Sorry, I have not even had my blood work done yet! I didn't know how to ask this vet about another way to treat her... I have only ever put Lugol's in her water and not consistently either. I have not googled yet for info on best way to treat her as naturally as possible. He will do a follow test in Feb. She is only 5 lbs. and I want to up her iodine. I have used Lugol's mixed in coconut oil to rub on her gums as she has bad teeth, so I am thinking this is one way to go to increase her intake...but how much? Any advice would be so appreciated. She is on a gluten free diet but is spoiled with human treats now and then. Thank you! Hannah
Guest guest
My friend just put her bull dog on thyroid meds - 5 grains of Nature-throid! She does Lugol's with him too but I am not sure how much. A raw diet is the best form for a dog. That is what I do with mine. We feed Nature's Variety. My hunch is that if cats can be toxic in bromide so can a dog. I am not sure what labs vets run. Guest guest
If your dog behaves and lolls around on the carpet instead of the furniture (unlike mine) then think of all the bromide they might absorb. My dog has never found a couch she didn't think she owned! Guest guest
How would we help our dogs and cats detox? I am not sure I am comfortable giving them the sea salt I consume. I am not sure their excretion pathways work the same. How much salt. My pups are under 20 lbs. Are we really sure it is safe for them.  Our pets live in the same environments we do. They are going to exposed to as much if not more (carpets) bromide than we are.  My dogs hang in both ... on the rugs on the floor, on their beds (hmm who knows about those) and on the couches with their humans. Spoiled dogs they are. Yep yep yep.  Jaxi On Fri, Jan 14, 2011 at 3:19 PM, ladybugsandbees <ladybugsandbees@...> wrote: My dog does both - but the couches can have bromide too.  Steph  Re: My dog dxd hypo  Hi All,My 8 yr old chi had her yearly blood work done (only T4)for thyroid and the vet has sent me home with Levothyroxine, liver support, as her enzymes were high and antibiotic also. Guest guest
Do you think dogs will excrete much bromine even though they aren't supposed to have much salt in their diet? I would think it would be harder to detox without salt in addition to iodine. - > > My dog does both - but the couches can have bromide too. > > Steph > > Re: My dog dxd hypo > > > > Hi All, > > My 8 yr old chi had her yearly blood work done (only T4)for thyroid and the vet has sent me home with Levothyroxine, liver support, as her enzymes were high and antibiotic also. Guest guest
Dogs need salt (unrefined salt) like any other animal (give them refined salt and they'll get sick right away). It is vital to life. Not in their water though. I don't give salt loads, just in their food, or give it free choice and they will take it.From: ladybugsandbees <ladybugsandbees@...>iodine Sent: Fri, January 14, 2011 2:46:16 PMSubject: Re: Re: My dog dxd hypo I have not given salt to my dog. Guest guest
Thank you all for the current answers. There are holistic health websites for animals and I will start to study them closer now. I do believe I need to go raw diet, so I will be studying all that. I am remembering the salt licks that are put out for large animals in the wild. They certainly need salt. Makes me think that given a choice of something salty to eat, my dog may eat it if she needs it. Going googling here asap. Guest guest
Why detoxified for your dog? Why not Lugol's? Or half an Iodoral in the food? Also, we feed our cat raw and just buy meat at the grocery store for her. We used to buy Nature's Variety, but it's better for their teeth and gums to have to bite and gnaw at chunks of meat & bone. ~WOn Fri, Jan 14, 2011 at 4:46 PM, ladybugsandbees <ladybugsandbees@...> wrote: I have not given salt to my dog. Guest guest
When feeding cats raw foods you need to add taurine for their eye site or they will blind. In dogs it doesn't matter. There is a book called Raw Meaty Bones. I can't think who the other is. The pet food pellets is the worse you could feed your pets. Take it from a vet tech. Just please add taurine to your cat's diet. from IllinoisFrom: Gracia <circe@...>To: iodine Sent: Sat, January 15, 2011 10:38:22 AMSubject: Re: Re: My dog dxd hypo my minischnauzers get 6.25mg Iodoral per day. gracia On 1/14/2011 6:30 PM, wendy 56789 wrote: Why detoxified for your dog? Guest guest
This is absolutely the case, yes. One can buy taurine capsules for human use and open them, or buy taurine packaged for feline use, and sprinkle on the food (or dose separately). btw, I have been giving my cats 3 to 5mg of iodine per day for several months and their health has improved. I have 4 sibling cats who were deprived of colostrum as infants and whose immune systems have been weak since infancy. I've done a lot to help them improve with diet and nutrition, and iodine has been an excellent addition. -- >When feeding cats raw foods you need to add taurine for their eye site or >they will blind. Guest guest
When I read 's post about taurine, I googled on this and discovered that my cat's diet, which is mostly raw beef heart on a daily basis, is extremely rich in taurine. I wondered, then, about iodine and discovered that is also found in the heart -- though I was unable to find amounts. On 1/16/2011 11:09 AM, Hannah wrote: Thanks for all the answers! Guest guest
, how do you dose your cats with iodine? Also, heart has lots of taurine in it. Guest guest
With most raw diets, meaning raw meaty bones, organs and muscle meat, dogs and cats get all the nutrients they need from the food. Unless an animal has different needs..some sickness, there is really no need to give supplements except salmon oil. Every animal is different though. I give Casey LDN as well. A lot of variety in meat species is best. Cats are more difficult than dogs, but small dogs and cats can eat cornish game hens, chicken thighs & legs, and larger pieces of meat that do not have to be ground. My cats thrived on a raw diet when I changed them in 1987. And I never gave them taurine. That was for cats not getting a raw meat diet, but for those who eat "cat food", which is mostly rancid grain. Yuck! I don't know why Casey doesn't like the iodine. She is sensitive to taste. I am going to grind up an Iodoral and see if she will eat it in some ground meat. Hope you see improvement soon. If you need help, the rawfeeding group on is good.Nonie On 1/16/2011 11:09 AM, Hannah wrote: Thanks for all the answers! This will take some new committment, however for now I am hopeful for improving their health dramatically. My chi gets more bloodwork in February so I will give an update then.SSSOooo grateful for this list!Hannah> >>> >>> >>I have not given salt to my dog. Guest guest
I don't feed my cats heart. Any diet that is not prepared for cats specifically needs to be looked at for taurine content. It *may* be the case the the diet has enough natural taurine in it, or it may not. I dose my cats with iodine by mixing drops of Lugol's into their wet food-- it doesn't bother them at all. I still feed canned food to my cats, but I feed a high quality version that has no grain at all. If feeding raw, just put the drop or two that each cat requires onto the raw food and observe to see that they ingest it. -- At 01:26 PM 1/16/2011, you wrote: >, how do you dose your cats with iodine? > >Also, heart has lots of taurine in it.
