Also consuming soy and soy containing products messes with your thyroid and estrogen. Soy isn't really good for our bodies like the government wants us to think. from IllinoisFrom: lwingard62 <lwingard62@...>iodine Sent: Tue, March 29, 2011 11:45:47 AMSubject: Re: can iodine increase estrogen levels?

I think the problem is that iodine does not change hormone levels DIRECTLY. It feeds the sex glands, whose function then changes. When an organ is chronically short of nutrients it needs, & suddenly gets a big dose, it isn't surprising that that might change the way the organ works. (Imagine yourself playing tug of war, & the other guy lets go of his end of the rope. It will take you a while to pick yourself up off the ground.)One question is if some of these changes are temporary. We know that the thryoid often swells for a time when it gets increased iodine. We know that thyroid tests show different values for a time after iodine supplementation begins. So I can't help but wonder if some of these sex hormone issues might be temporary, too.I had the feeling when I first started iodine that my body went through a period of transient confusion -- hot flashes for a while, a surge in granny whiskers for a while... It was a bit unsettling. Since I was still transitioning through menopause, I can't even swear that all those changes were caused by iodine. But my thyroid swelled & then shrank, my breasts softened up, my sleep patterns changed...Iodine has so many effects in the body that you can get a wide range of symptoms -- many of which seem to settle down after a short time. It is scary to be patient when things feel like they are going out of whack. But a lot of times people stop abruptly when they think iodine is causing problems, & that sets off MORE instability in the system. What you are TRYING to do is get the whole body into a healthier state of balance.Another important question is what OTHER things you might be doing that affect sex hormones -- like eating soy, or taking hormone affecting herbs. I unwittingly shot myself in the foot many years ago, by taking a supplement that contained wild yam in its ingredients. Turns out I am VERY sensitive to wild yam, & it made my fibroids grow. The supplement was supposedly a nutritional one, & I was less knowledgable then about herbs, so I had no idea that the wild yam was seriously messing me up. And I didn't figure it out till much later. Any time you get an unexpected result, it is a good idea to go through your supplements & check all the ingredients. Unfortunately, in the present climate, supplement companies use doublespeak to keep them from getting into trouble with the FDA. You might find a vague claim to the effect that something "supports hormone balance." It sounds pretty benign, but it might mean that it tweaks your hormones -- in which case, you want to know what it tweaks & how much.Forgive me if it is impertinent to ask, but why are you taking so much estrogen when your estrodial is testing so high?AnneOn Mar 29, 2011, at 10:21 AM, alagonza2000 wrote:

I can't speak from the scientific perspective just from my experience. But over the past three years of taking iodoral, my thyroid hormones have gradually increased and therefore am able to decrease desiccated thyroidhormones. Am now down to one naturethroid per day when was on 2 1/2.I know it brings you back to balance and I believe brings up progesterone too, becauseI no longer have period twice per month! And am physically stronger!AliOn Mar 29, 2011, at 12:40 PM, allielbl wrote:

I wonder if this is why my saliva test

came back with such low progesterone levels? Also, since it does affect the

hormones, is it safe for children that have not reached puberty level? I

started my children on a few drops of iodine each day, but I would not want to

do anything that would affect them in any way as far as hormones.

Re: can iodine

increase estrogen levels?

I can't remember where I found this online, but these are notes taken from:

Anonymous Report – Iodine Conference Feb 07

" IODINE APPEARS TO WORK LIKE TAMOXIFEN ON THE ESTROGEN RECEPTORS

Iodine suppresses the estrogen receptors. Iodine also has caused some HRT users

to require more estrogen to keep menopausal symptoms under control.

Iodine appears to sensitize all the hormone receptors (except estrogen). Those

taking Cortef (for adrenals) may eventually require less. "

I'm only 34 but found that after 1 year on 50mg Iodoral (when I was 31 or 32),

I began to get some menopause like symptoms such as night sweats and difficulty

ovulating. I also dropped a cup size plus experienced too much weight loss in

general. I thought I was having hyperthyroid symptoms, but when I got tested I

was still a hypo (though less so than before the iodine), but my estrogen and

progesterone were really low. So I began natural progesterone, which initially

helped and relieved all the above symptoms, but as it woke up my estrogen

receptors, I went through a period of estrogen dominance, then it balanced out,

but then my progesterone was fine but my estrogen again became too low. So now

I'm working with phytoestrogenic herbs. Again they helped take care of the

symptoms initially, but now the symptoms have returned, so I'm not sure if it

will just take longer or if I need to permanently reduce my iodine. I've been

on a high dosage for years and have gotten very close to 90% excretion. My

hypothyroid symptoms feel so much better on a high dose, so I'm hoping I am

able to find a way to keep my estrogen up...

If you are low on cortisol in the adrenals, it "takes" the

progesterone for cortisol and you end up low... I am the same. The

integrative doctor I saw suggested that after 2 weeks of T3

supplements, that I use an OTC progesterone cream all month long to

supplement my levels. I'll need one more week on T3 to be able to

start.

Iodine is safe for children. We all need iodine and we're not getting

it. Lack of iodine will lead to all kinds of imbalances, including

hormonal. Iodine will increase the metabolism, as was mentioned, which

changes hormone production. In general, we all desperately need iodine and

taking it is the path to health. Even if taking iodine reveals other

imbalances, without the iodine true health will not develop.

Children need iodine and should be given it.

No, my estrogen is fine (I never realized

that thinner women have less - I am on the thinner side), but the progesterone

dropped pretty low and my doctor is going to put me on a prescription

progesterone since the cream is not helping me at all. I agree, we definitely

don’t want too much estrogen!

Lori

Re: can iodine

increase estrogen levels?

It's possible, although there are other reasons why progesterone can get low.

Was your estrogen high? Most people are estrogen dominant and the iodine helps

tremendously with this. It protects us against the xeno-estrogens in

environmental pollutants... Slender women have a lot less estrogen in their

bodies and so becoming estrogen deficient may happen quicker on iodine. I was

on a fairly high dose - 50mg... Which, like I said, really helped me in all

other ways... besides the estrogen issue... And the first year it probably

detoxed me of a lot of dangerous estrogen, which is what contributes to

fibrocystic breasts, breast cancer, and other cancers...

Thank you again . That helped reassure

That has been my experience as well. I initially had to raise my thyroid meds when I went on higher doses of iodine. At one point I was up to 4 grains. Now I have been on 2.5 grains for about a year, gradually reducing it .5 grain at a time. This is lower than my pre-iodine levels. As I continue to supplement, I'm still hoping to eventually get it even lower.

FWIW I am using estradiol in olive oil, 2.5mg 2X a day and 100mg

Iodoral per day.   also progesterone 250mg.  I just can't use

If this is the case you should really look into pregnenalone. It is the main hormone that dispurses to either one of the thyroid hormone, cortisol, DHEA, or progesterone. I was low in everything and it helps. You may only need a small dose.

For most people this is not a problem. Iodine helps to level out your hormones, not throw out of whack. Donna in IL Can anyone address this definitively? It is of great concern that iodine acts like Tamoxifan, suppressing estrogen receptors. This is news, and I hope we might have a good solution. Is it as simple as supplementing with estrogen and progesterone cream?(estro from days 2-15; progest days 15-25?)Or might pregnenalone be the only solution? For those taking 100mgs iodine, it is important to know how to keep the hormones up!Thanks!> >> >> >> > i have been on hormone replacement for 12 years. i have a very hard time > >>getting my estrogen up to acceptable levels even with very high doses. it's good > >>if i can just get my estradiol up to 150. but since i have been supplementing > >>with iodine my last estradiol level was 403. i was just wondering if anyone knew > >>if the cause could be the iodine. thank you very much :)> >> >> >>>

That is exactly what my ND thought might

be happening to me. My doctor had me start on Isocort for my adrenals. I will

also be starting on progesterone shortly and hope that will help.
