you can also buy the mag in crystal form from an aquarium supply shop, which is good quality oddly enough, and mix it yourself. If you buy it in crystal form there's alot less chance it won't be good. That's what we do. Just mix it up so all the crystals are saturated. I have the recipe around here somewhere, will look for it if you want it.

Anne is correct.  Even some of the higher grade professional brands have been tested to not be what they advertise to be (potency wise).  I would never trust my health to using dollar store, pharmacy (like Walgreens or CVS) or even  most things at CostCo.  Better to order from iHerb.com or Swansons or even Vitacost to get a lower cost.  It's not worth it try to cut corners when it comes to something like this when there are moderate priced options.

I hate to be a downer, but a lot of the stuff at the dollar stores is cheap stuff from China -- & their record for safety is not terribly good...

It is not really that odd.  Fish are very sensitive creatures.  Poor quality water or minerals, etc in their water can result in illness and death for the fish very quickly.  I kept fish fresh and salt water and even worked part time at a fish store to support my hobby for many years.
