I will never do another scan again. My last one was in May 2005 when I had my final RAI. It makes no sense to me to deplete the body of iodine and starve it of thyroid hormone for the sake of testing when these are the very things that put you at risk for cancer. (Low metabolic Rate & Low Iodine). I use Tg to determine how I am doing. I am 11 years past dx. Had 3 RAI's that failed. Obviously that didn't solve the problem. Detoxing, balancing my hormones and maintaining a good level of nutrients does heal the body. Thyroid cancer is the only cancer that requires this barbaric method of *checking*.

If you determine that you want to be off iodine then it would be about 2-3 weeks. Most Endo's do a 24 hour iodine urine test if they are concerned. Remember though that low iodine doesn't only effect the test. It is one of the major controlling factors for protecting the body of bad DNA and mutating cells - all over the body.

Dr. Brownstein's book Iodine addresses cancer and iodine. www.drbrownstein.com There isn't anything that pulls it all together. This is my project for the year. I want to write a formal - holistic - book on Thyroid cancer now that I am done with school.

You can look at the documents on www.iodine4health.com There are some articles on iodine and thyroid cancer there. Not sure if it will give you what you want though.

You are between a rock and a hard place. Has anyone tested you Tg levels? That's the cancer marker all 5 of my endo's used for determining cancer or not.

I have finished school. :)

What is the study you are involved in that requires you to do this. I know how low the scan doses are. I have done 4 of them. It's still radioactive iodine. I-123 with a half life of 36 hours. You radiate all around you. They tell you its no big deal but it is. You cannot ingest radiation and expect good results. It's just not possible.

I never took Thyrogen - my docs always made me go hypo. Last year Thyrogen had a recall because they found metal particles in the injections. Lovely huh?

I'm just saying.... I think there is a better way. If you Tg is negative then you should be *golden*

hi Steph,

I'm so impressed with your knowledge. I would like to know what kind of schooling you've done. I sounds that you have pursued and tryed many areas on your the healing path and round yourself with a complementary package

of a comprehensive wide take on the healing science.

Would you mind sharing with us your background and your schooling accomplishments?

Thank you for the compliment Graciela.

My father was a chiropractor. So my foundation as a small child was in natural methods of healing. I was born in 1965 so it wasn't as *mainstream* to have chiropractic care. My standard food was meat, veggies and occasional potatoes. Nothing fried or with sugar. Snacks were cheese, dried fruit, raw veggies and sometimes leftover steak. My lunches were brown breads, raw veggies & fruit, soups. I took Standard Process supplements crushed in applesauce. OH Yeah! I was very healthy. Never vaccinated and never saw a doctor until my 8th grade sports physical for tennis.

But then my mom & dad divorced and being poor we slipped into the S.A.D. diet. From this point my health began to deteriorate. Oh and I should add my mom had me vaccinated with the MMR & Polio when I was 12 because she felt I needed it. I started getting sick afterward.

Fast forward to my college years where I was on my own and at poorly. Got a great job that required lots of travel and was high stress. More health issues piled on but I ignored that my nutrition could be a factor. In 1999 I became pregnant with my son and in March 2000 I was dx'd with thyroid cancer. I continued down the allopathic trail until my 3rd recurrence of thyroid cancer after 3 failed radiation treatments. My father had died by this point so there was no one to talk to. I had to find my way. I began reading books and started to see a local ND. He helped me to start on my journey. Then when they wanted to do external beam radiation for more cancer I ran. I made an appt with Dr. Brownstein and he has been my saving grace. He has mentored me and taught me more things than just healing my thyroid cancer. Through his instruction and support I decided to go for my Doctorate in Naturopathy. I just graduated with my ND (waiting on my diploma at the moment to become official) and will be setting up a practice. I am currently attending the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and will graduate from there in June of this year. Most of my knowledge has come from reading. I have a HUGE library of books. I read close to 50 books the year I was fighting for my life and looking for answers. I spend hours on the internet researching things I don't know. I am blessed to be connected to many of the medical professionals who willingly share their knowledge with me.

So that's the long and the short of me. www.naturalthyroidchoices.com is my website and my full story is in my blog on the right menu.

What are you doing for hypoparathyroid now? Is this due to removal from the thyroidectomy or damage done during the surgery? I have a thyca friend who had this happen and she has to supplement with various nutrients to overcome it.

It is my pleasure. I promised God that if he helped me to find the people to heal my body then I would give back to others to heal as well. :)

Mishie,

Given what you understand now about the hazards of going through the

scan, I'm wondering if it would help you to revisit the idea of the

research project. It sounds like you are very certain the project

will be helpful to you. But how sure are you about that? It is,

after all, an experiment -- and it likely has the usually drawbacks

of unknown drugs, to say nothing of other, possibly invasive,

testing by doctors. And could you wind up as a "control"? I'm not

quite seeing why you would view participation with such enthusiasm

and hope -- so much so that you would risk the scan.

Oh dear, oh dear! When you put it that way, I had to

for 5 years. Can I do that with just a negative Tg? I"m

not certain about that. What do you think? I would LOVE to

not go through the scan because I really and truly do not

want to go through the process of going off the Iodoral

and a low iodine diet for for 3+ weeks.

So I have a few weeks to figure this out and decide what

to do. I am open to your input because I know that it is

based on much thought and care for those of us dealing

with this issue.

Thanks for sharing your background and story too! :)
