Guest guest
Since I have started taking iodine and the companion nutrients, i have experience trouble swallowing & gasping for breath on several occasions now. It takes a good minute or so to regain the ability to swallow & stop choking and gasping. It is really scary. I have never had this happen before. It usually happens right at bedtime while I'm laying down but not yet asleep. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm on 12.5mg iodoral and all the companion nutrients. any feedback is appreciated! tiff

Guest guest
Lots of people have temporary thyroid swelling when they first start iodine, & that swelling can make it harder to swallow. I am inclined to think that many of us have baby goiters before we start the protocol, & are unaware that our thyroids are already swollen, so the extra swelling can be uncomfortable. I imagine you may be tempted to stop the iodine at this point, but I think the only way to get it all shrinking again is to persist. Once the thyroid realizes that you are going to keep giving it enough iodine, it will start shrinking again. In my case, my thyroid eventually shrank to smaller than it had been in many years, so it was worth the temporary discomfort of the swelling.I don't know what to suggest about dosing. More iodine would likely promote earlier shrinkage, but increasing the dose too quickly might give you detox problems...You might try elevating your head with pillows at bedtime, to help you breathe. If you can just hang in there a little while, the situation should improve soon.AnneOn Apr 18, 2011, at 4:17 AM, wrote: Since I have started taking iodine and the companion nutrients, i have experience trouble swallowing & gasping for breath on several occasions now. Guest guest
Sure, I take this daily: iodoral 12.5 mag 400mg selenium 200mcg vit c 2000-3000mg vit b complex daily salt 1tsp I also have my 9 yr dd on the protocol and she tells me she has trouble breathing & swallowing properly sometimes too. Maybe something runs in our family? Could you look at what I'm giving her too and let me know if this is correct. I don't want to stop taking the iodine protocol, I'm just really concerned. She is taking this daily, She's 9yr & weighs 85lbs: iodoral 12.5mg mag 400mg selenium 100mcg vitc 2000mg vit b complex. daily salt 1/2tsp Thanks for your help! Guest guest
Thanks for responding Anne! We have been on iodine for about 6 months now, and this has happened about 5-6 times now. Would the thyroid still be swollen after taking it for this long? I think that's what's confusing me about this situation. It starts out feeling like my throat is super dry and then just kind of goes into feeling like my throat won't swallow and then it's followed by gasping for breath. It lasts only a minute or so but it is awful. You are right I don't want to stop the iodine, i just don't want for this to continue. > > > Since I have started taking iodine and the companion nutrients, i have experience trouble swallowing & gasping for breath on several occasions now. Guest guest
Well, you are still on a pretty low dose, so that will increase the length of time it takes to reduce the swelling in the thyroid. Do you have bad detox when you go higher? If Dr. Brownstein is now thinking that 50 mg is a maintenance dose, & if higher doses seem to be needed early in the process, it could be that you just need to work up to a significantly higher dose for a while (if that is possible.) It could be that you are maintaining the thyroid at starvation level, so that it keeps trying to reach out for more iodine?AnneOn Apr 18, 2011, at 11:54 AM, wrote: Thanks for responding Anne! Guest guest
,12.5 isn't much at all especially for being on that same amount for 6 months. I would double that dose. Usually increasing will help. From: <teddibunz@...>iodine Sent: Mon, April 18, 2011 1:54:09 PMSubject: Re: I need help please Thanks for responding Anne! Guest guest
Anne, Yes, the detox gets horrible every time i increase my dose. So I have been moving slowly. I finally made it to 12.5 this month and am feeling ok. I will try uping it again, but am nervous. The main symptoms i get from uping it are sinus headaches, swollen throat and coughing with breathing problems. It feels like someone is sitting on my chest all day long... Sometimes i feel very light headed from it. These are not like the episodes that happen at night, these are continuous. It gets kinda scary at times. Guest guest
have you ever been checked for a complete Thyroid Panel??? You could be having more than detox symptoms and it is always better to check things out to be sure. On 4/18/2011 2:06 PM, wrote: Anne, Yes, the detox gets horrible every time i increase my dose.
