The recommended amount for pregnancy is 12.5 mgs - especially since you have been on a higher dose for one year prior. The supporting nutrients don't change based on the dosage of iodine. You need the same levels. They are foundational nutrients.

Congratulations on your new baby-to-be.

iodine in pregnancy

I am currently 2.5 months pregnant. I had been on Iodoral 50-100 mg for this past 1 year prior. I now want to cut down Iodoral during pregnancy, perhaps to 6.25 mg daily. My question is: how much selenium, niacin, Vit. B2, Vit C., and magnesium do I need to take for 6.25 mg of Iodoral?? Thanks!

On that topic, I have gotten accustomed to 10 iodoral. When I back off I feel bad, hormones out of balance etc.If I were to get pregnant, since the body natuarally has a surgein progesterone which makes one feel good, would I still feel bad since I am missing the dosageI became accustomed to? And for nine months?Thank you.AliOn Jan 12, 2011, at 7:11 PM, ladybugsandbees wrote:The recommended amount for pregnancy is 12.5 mgs - especially since you have been on a higher dose for one year prior. I don't think this is anything anyone can tell you. You'll have to see when the time came.

Thanks Steph for the advice and clearing that up. I have searched various places for an answer to the question and could never find one - "Do you change the amounts of the companion supplements depending on the amount of iodine you take?"As far as the pregnancy goes, do you think I should take the 12.5 mg Iodoral every day or every other day? I guess I am still a little hesitant that a large amount of iodine may be harmful to the baby.Thanks.

There is never a way to know just how much is moving into the blood stream but you have taken in higher amounts for a year and that would be the biggest push. From the conversation that went on at the conference with the iodine docs I got the feeling that they were being conservative with their decision to say 12.5 mgs was *safe*. There is a blood test that will check for bromide in the blood and they discussed that if they had a patient that had been detoxing hard before pregnancy and there was reason for concern then this test may be in order. The purpose of the supporting nutrients is to give the proper cofactors for not only using iodine properly but also helping with the detox. Normal maintenance is considered 25 mgs / day. So you are below that. The benefits of higher iodine intake for your baby are found in higher IQ's and lowered risk of defects.
