Thought you may want to check out our weekly newsletter. Click on "Science" where we focus on etiology, diagnosis and most importantly, treatment. Autism Speaks is very focused on all three of these areas for all of our children. We raise a lot of money because research, raising awareness and granting money costs a lot of money.

I am not sure how can we get too much publicity for our children? The more people hear about our children the more awareness we raise and the more the world understands. Of course that does not "treat" our children, but it certainly helps teach people to better understand our children and our families.

New Guidelines Urge Pediatricians to Screen All Children for Autism

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) now recommends that all children be screened for autism spectrum disorder twice before age two, as part of well-baby checkups. Further, it recommends that treatment for autism be started when autism spectrum disorder is suspected, rather than when a formal diagnosis is made. The release of these new guidelines has prompted national media coverage of the importance of early diagnosis and of the recently launched ASD video glossary. NIH Announces ACE Award Recipients

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has announced the new members of its Autism Centers of Excellence (ACE) program. The ACE program represents a consolidation of two existing programs, the Studies to Advance Autism Research and Treatment (STAART) and Collaborative Programs of Excellence in Autism (CPEA) programs into a single research effort.

Initially, five centers and two networks received funding in 2007 to study ASD. Funding for a second set of ACE research programs will be announced in 2008. Read more about the centers receiving funding here. Read the full press release from the NIH here.

House/Senate Conference Committee Approves $37M for Autism Services & Programs

On November 1, the joint House and Senate conference committee approved $37 million for autism services and treatment programs at the HHS's Health Resources and Services Administration. This represents a $17 million increase over last year's level, and is the amount authorized by the Combating Autism Act, which was signed into law last year. Read more.

Studies Identify Immune Molecules, Prenatal Body Size as Potential Markers for Autism

The November 1 issue of Biological Psychiatry contains seven autism-related articles, along with a commentary by Autism Speaks Scientific Advisory Committee member Geschwind, M.D., Ph.D. Two of these articles tentatively identify immunological cell adhesion molecules and prenatal body size, as measured by ultrasound, as biological markers for autism. Identifying such markers is crucial for detecting autism earlier, before behavioral signs are evident. Read a recap of this special issue here.

Houston s Raise Over $280,000, San Diego Walk Cancelled

Two thousand walkers raised over $280,000 at Reliant Stadium in Houston on October 27. s enjoyed family activities, as well as inspirational speeches from Houston Texans Special Teams Coach Joe Marciano, and others. Read more and watch video here. In light of the tremendous devastation caused by the California wildfires, the San Diego Walk Now for Autism scheduled for November 3 has been cancelled. Support Team Autism Speaks in the ING NYC Marathon

Fifty-five runners from thirteen states and Canada will participate in the ING NYC Marathon 2007 on Sunday, November 4 as part of "Team Autism Speaks". The race begins in Staten Island on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and winds through each of the five boroughs.
