Guest guest
Yes, it was on Dr. Oz, if it was on last week, it was a repeat. X ray info for women - re: thyroid On Wednesday, Dr. Oz had a show on the fastest growing cancer in women, thyroid cancer. It was a very interesting program and he mentioned that the increase could possibly be related to the use of dental x-rays and mammograms. He demonstrated that on the apron the dentist puts on you for your dental x-rays there is a little flap that can be lifted up and wrapped around your neck. Many dentists don't bother to use it. Also, there is something called a "thyroid guard" for use during mammograms. By coincidence, I had my yearly mammogram yesterday. I felt a little silly, but I asked about the guard and sure enough, the technician had one in a drawer. I asked why it wasn't routinely used. Answer: "I don't know. You have to ask for it." Well, if I hadn't seen the show, how would I have known to ask? Pass this important information on to your family and friends.
Guest guest
I had read this recently somewhere else... I think it only makes sense to be cautious, and if they actually have the guard in the office... it must be for something. I have an x-ray tech friend... I'll ask her now that I think of it. Guest guest
Hi Anne: I checked it on Snopes and it's true; but they also said that the guard might block something and not give an accurate result. So, in order to not get breast cancer, you need to get a mammogram. However, the x-rays might kill you if you do it as often as " medical science " says to. This is a big reason why I go to the doctor's only if I really need to, like to get my thyroid scriptions. It's also why I don't get mammograms, which apparently these same " medical scientists " are now rethinking, concerned that it might cause cancer. Go figure.ArielOn Mon, Apr 4, 2011 at 2:31 PM, Anne Seals <anneseals@...> wrote: Does anybody know if this is legit? Guest guest
I believe you shouldn't ask for the guard. Crap, not all lay people know about this. I'm a vet tech and yes, I wear and apron and thyroid guard when doing x-rays on people's pets.Good Lord. from IllinoisFrom: Anne Seals <anneseals@...>iodine Sent: Mon, April 4, 2011 1:31:36 PMSubject: Fwd: X ray info for women - re: thyroid Does anybody know if this is legit? Guest guest
I just finished a book saying that thyroid cancer deaths were the same for the last 30 years at 1500 for the US population at 350,000 but the over diagnosis of thyroid cancer is growing rapidly. They had studies comparing different technicians reading the same circled information and how consistently.NOT they were- some consistently were stating cancer while others went other direction looking at same circled slides. Also same book that was listed on here a few weeks back or at least author was. There was a study a decade ago saying that mammograms were not useful for women in 40s due to dense breast tissue and then politics made them keep the insurance companies paying for these mammograms and all the resultant efforts from the results. I did research for a thermographer and in the process totally switched to thermography even when I had 4 new breast lumps. I backed that up with ultrasound and radiologist had seen so few thermography studies that he came and talked to me and told me those 4 were benign but he always recommended a mammogram to everyone which I declined. Thermography finds BC at 30,000 cells vs 1 millions cells which gives time to try more options for reversal and 8 years earlier potentially.
