Guess what Faye I am not going to say do the program with her. LOL If she is substituting 2 meals with slimfast then when she starts eating 3 square meals a day again she will gain back. Mass General being the medical meca of the world you would think they would not promote that type of living. BUT you did say it is for a lot of other studies as well. A lot of the quick fix medical studies are to get you ready for some surgical procedure OR a way to jump start your life. MEET her in the middle you do your calorie thing and do exercise together. AND water because I belief that is on any diet. I have done slimfast it is good but you can only do it for so long. I occasionally have it if I am on the run.

Is this Slim Fast - name brand, trademark - or some other protein drink? If

the other, she better be careful - studies showed *years* ago that those

diets are not only harmful to the kidneys but *all* the weight (plus about

20% more) are regained as soon as " refeeding " - the return to real food -

occurs.

I think, when she

> tries to be strict, which she is this week, that she is basically not

> eating enough, She gets hungry, grumpy and obsessed with the diet.

> Sound familiar?

Every dieters' nightmare.

> I know, I know, I should be and I AM happy that my partner is taking

> good care of her health!!!

You said this plan includes a set amount of exercise, too. Do the 2 of you

work out together? That would be fun and another way to get closer.

> But I'm just venting to all of you, to say how very hard it is for

> me to be living with this!!!

Now you know what *every* spouse/SO of a strict dieter feels like! We're not

very nice to live with when we're starving all the time. LOL

> I fear that people in this group will say, " Faye why don't you just

> do the program WITH Louise, and I understand why you might think that.

And you answer should be that you're working with your *own* doctor, thank,

you for your concern.

> I'm working this through on my own, talking to friends and in

> therapy.

Would it help to say that a lot of spouses of successful people feel the

same way you do in a crowd? Whether the " success " is in monetary,

prestigious, or weight loss terms, it's still the fact that *they* are the

center of attention and *we're* not.

Faye,

I'm with you and Sue on this. Liquid diets in the long run don't

work. (Remember Oprah?)

Maybe as part of the program they will transition Louise to food and

continue to support her during the transition.

People are such tactless boobs! If I'm talking to a fat couple and

one has lost tons of weight, I wouldn't go on about it when both are

there. Geez.

I do have one tiny suggestion, however. Love yourself more by

eating no pastries. Not fewer pastries, no pastries. Eating that

stuff now is angry and rebellious.

You know what? There is no darn way I could live on 1500 Kcal a day

with two of the meals liquid. I'd be bingeing in two weeks. Your

plan to be honest and raise awareness is a good beginning to finding

something you can live with long term that is effective for you.

I did a medically-supervised liquid fast this past year. Was on it for 5 months. It was the "jump start" that I needed. I had been working on establishing a healthier lifestyle for about a year. Weight just was not coming off. While on the liquid fast I lost about 65 pounds. Once I started eating real food again I gained about 10 pounds back. My doc & dietitian said that was to be expected. Now, I'm working with my dietitian to establish a better eating plan.

Would I do it again? Yes. I dropped pounds, my blood sugars are down & so is my blood pressure.

I also know it is not something I could do long-term. I am thinking of starting it again -- on a limited basis. But haven't made that decision yet.

I drink the low carb slimfast (not the optima). I drink it 2 x a day

with 2 - 200 snacks by 2:00 then dinner then my last snack. I try to

keep calories to around 1500. There are soo many vitamins and minerals

in it that I am not hungry on it. for me, the carbohydrates is what

makes me hungry and they are pretty well gone (until dinner). I am a

diabetic and I can not tell you how much of a boost it has been to find

something to eat that is not raising my sugar (or pushing me to eat

more. For 180 calories you can NOT find another food with as much

nutrition in it! so, why would I be hungry? I am out the door by 7:

with my slimfast in my hand and it way more than lasts til 10:00

(snack). If i don't watch it it is noon before i know it and I missed

my snack. Its a good feeling not to be watching the clock for my next

meal. I eat 3 meals with 3 snacks and my blood level stays more

constant that way! Remeber the potato chip ad BET YOU CAN " T EAT JUST

ONE? Actally they were not refering to the chips but they knew what

eating carbs can do! I laugh at my husband as he is not over weight but

can not stop until he eats a whole bag of chips, ice cream, or cookies

and tells me it upsets him now to dig in so ask me not to even buy that

junque!!! My taste buds are now asleep but I know how easy it is to

reawaken them!

Incidentally foods with artificial sweetener does the same as sugar---it

makes you want more and dr. says it can put on about 5 pounds a year. I

drink sugar free soda (diabetic) but that's it!

Dacia! I just wanted to say the reason i eat my carbs at dinner and

mabe last snack is so i am not over eating all day. They cause me to do

this! It is hard to be in control when you are dealing with a chemical

addition--sugar! Some are more sensitive than others!

It is the name brand, slimfast. Louise uses the bars rather than the

They do transition folks into regular food; there is support, but in

my opinion they are completely inadequate and inproperly staffed to

handle the severe emotional upheaval that comes up. Louise suffered a

very severe depression, and I felt they were out to lunch(not quite!)

in helping her deal with that. They are like a broken record about

keeping within your calories, etc.

When I did the liquid fast, I was surprised that I could live on 1000 calories or less. I will admit that the first two weeks were not pleasant. But after I got past those first two weeks, it really was not difficult to stay on the liquid fast. In fact, there were times that I would have to work on getting all of the drinks in by the end of the day. And to be honest, I have considered going back to it. Just haven't been able to find the two weeks in my schedule when I can get started again.

The liquid-fast part of the program turned out to be the easiest part. I didn't have any choices or decisions to make. Now that I am eating real food in the real world, I have more choices & decisions to make.

Another added benefit to me being on the fast for those 5 months is that my teenage sons learned how to cook. Because I didn't do any cooking during those 5 months!

Faye! You will lose! Hang in there! There is no one program that will

fit all of us! Not even one size fits all fits me!!! LOL I wish i

could eat without them but cereal and milk leaves me in about 1/2 hour

no matter how big the bowl. adding toast and juice are just adding more

carbs--I was even hungrier. I felt like I was a tiger in a cage lookin

for something. There wasn't enough food to satisify me. I glad i tried

that because it was a terific experiment! I know others have no energy

unless they do eat carbs! Like I say different strokes for different

can't speak for her but.... I plan on using slimfast for 2 of my meals

permanently! (actually it is 1/2 meal) other half is at 10:00 why would

i want to go back to cereal? eggs? sometimes i have those but still

have 200 more calories at 10:00. slim fast is not really a liquid diet.

it is a 1/3 liquid diet. just enough help! I love not having to look

to see what I will have! I already know!!! Only way to get as many

vitamins in in a vitamin pills and not a One a day either. It would

have to be individual pill for each vitamin to get that many!

>I won't put myself on a food plan where I am feeling hungry all the

time. I just won't!<

Faye, I understand what you are saying here. I must say than when I

first started " my plan " I often felt ravenous! But after a couple

of weeks the big hunger pains subsided. And, when I'm home in the

evenings, sometimes, I " snack " almost every 2 hours (unless like

tonight when I had a huge dinner...) and I'm pretty much averaging

1500 cals a day.

As many of the other posts have said, there are different strokes

for different folks. But I know the relationship I have with " bad "

or unhealthy food is like an addictive behavior. So maybe, like

smokers, people like me need to suffer withdrawal pains. As much as

it drove me crazy, for a while, I am happy I stuck it out. Now I am

consistently on track and losing every week.

I enjoy the food I eat and I don't feel deprived because I

eat " good " healthy/nutritious food that fills me up and tastes

good. The restrictions I have placed on myself (*almost* no white

sugar or flour & no eating in the car!) prevents me from grabbing

something that I know is not good for me. But I am not so

restrictive that I can't have a small dessert with coffee at a cafe

with friends (so what if it's white flour & sugar! I'm " good " the

majority of the time!), or something else outside " my plan " now &

again.

I do hope you will find the plan that works for you!

: ) Alice

p.s. I wonder... do you think slim fast is helping to fund the

study Louise is on???

Alice: There's a lot to what you are saying here. I need to take

losing weight serious enough that I can endure the initial difficult

period. Sort of the " no pain , no gain " ( or LOSS!) way of thinking.

It is not easy, it's changing behavior, and this is always hard and

sometimes even painful. Sort of like the treatment or surgery you

need to get through to take care of a disease or problem and come out

the other side. For some reason, I just was able to " see this " when I

read your post, so I thank you.

One good thing about the McDougall plan is that we're told to *eat* when

hungry, as much as we want, as long as it's the allowed foods.

> This is certainly part of what I feel. I'm learning what stuff in my

> childhood gets triggered big time with this.>

I was the middle child, with my older brother the oldest grandchild on both

sides of the family and getting all the grandparents' attention, and my

younger brother was not only the baby but had a few medical problems as a

kid so got all our parents' attention. As the typical middle child, I was an

over-achiever in schoolwork and play, but unfortunately the only time *I*

got attention was when the doctor would tell my mom to put me on another

diet. That kind of attention I could do without.

I did enough of those diets as a kid. Remember things like Metrecal and

Carnation Instant Breakfast? Each of those was 250 calories, so for

breakfast I was allowed one packet/can, lunch one more, then a 500 cal

dinner for a total of 1000 cal. Awful tasting stuff, no matter which flavor

I chose, and never lost a pound.
