Guest guest
Thank you,Dan for trying to table this controversy. There will always be a difference of opinion regarding this matter. I,like Marge taught special education, and for some children it works and others it doesn't. Only the parent, teacher, counselor and most of all a neurologist should decide what is best for any child-not this list. So-everyone-stifle yourselves and let's move on-even me! Guest guest
Terri, Dr. Goldberg says that Ritalin reduces blood flow THROUGHOUT the brain... not just in the desired area. On the last videoconference, he gave the example of a doctor starting a child on Ritalin and then wondering why their IQ seemed to be dropping. He said that looking at a NeuroSPECT scan of this child could show that the entire brain had less blood flow on Ritalin and therefore was not functioning as well. He does mention that there are alternatives that might be worth a try, such as Tenex (a blood pressure med). I wish I remembered more, but that's some of the basic info. He also posted an article somewhere on his website concerning the possibility that Ritalin could be a carcinogen. If anyone can fill in the details here, please do. Guest guest
You're right, the studies Dr.G cited did compare Ritalin to cocaine not heroin. Here is a new drug in the works, Feingold Newsletter. Atomoxetine as a potential replacement for Ritalin. " Another ADHD drug is in the works. Atomoxetine is not classified as a stimulant and does not involve the neurotransmitter dopamine, as does Ritalin. Atomoxetine works by increasing the supply of the neurotransmitter, norepinephrine, which helps to control impulsive behaviors. The manufacturer, Eli Lilly, believes the drug will not trigger side effects such as tic disorders that have been attributed to the use of Ritalin. Atomoxetine is being reviewed by the FDA and is not yet available. " Happy Mothers Day, McCreary

Guest guest
But what is his medical proof? It is quite clear from many statements that he doesn't like it but saying it is a bad drug doesn't in and of itself make it so. But I would want more specific evidence than " it's like heroin " . And BTW, in response to an earlier post, ritalin increases the blood flow to the frontal lobe which has a decrease in blood flow when a person with ADD is given a task that is boring. Hence the reason it works is that it counteracts the natural shutdown that occurs with people with ADD allowing them to be more focused and seemingly paradoxically more relaxed. Guest guest
, I hate to say this here, you may have to do what works best for your son without worry about if it is or not. My son is in third grade too, I have been worry about his writing, worry about how teacher can more effectively work with him in his third grade (a new teacher, and new school). I am lucky because last year he gained a lot of progress on social interactions with help of DAN protocol, OT, ST, and Dr. Greenspan's DT. My son can read books at three years age (he is good at math and science too), but did not write his first word until well after four. Although his a good writer (if he writes on his own term), his brain race too quick for his hand in other situations. As writing is the big thing in 3rd grade, We have been working with his writing, very nervously. However, he is making progress, he is writing longer sentences and taking less time to write. I agree with concept, but I am not going to take my son off DAN to try . Right now, he is happy, ready to learn, enjoy his 3rd grade, has " a handful of friends who looking for him to play, and he will pay with, " and healthy, so I am happy too. I am not sure protocol will give me better results than that. Even if I try someday, I may do some of both at same time. I know a 4th grader in my son's after school club, he has adhd and very aggressive. He started his medicine in 3rd grade (I did not remember the name), his behavior problem disappeared, he is getting better grade, feel much better about himself, and now he is almost off special Ed (school still " monitor " him). I also know a 3rd grader who has adhd, last year he started his medicine (I know he is taking something other than rutlin). Later in the year, his mother was told his math assessment test was at 92%. She was very surprised, because he was never know as good at math even he was a smart kid. I also saw him very nicely engaging in conversation at after school club. When I told his mother what I saw, she was very very happy. My point here is, everybody are different, someone works well with , some kids work well with DAN, and some kids work well with medicines such as Ritalin. Just go with the one that you think will help your son enjoy school, enjoy his friends, and ready to learn. Guest guest
Exactly. Well said. Jim I few years ago I had a young man (13 years old) in my school field trip group who was a handful....to say the least. I finally mentioned something to his teacher who said, " Oh yes, he is on Ritalin and after I give him his pill with lunch, he will be better. " After lunch, this child was no better. Of course, his lunch, which his mother had packed (or he had packed) consisted of a twinkie, a ding dong, and cookies....ALL SUGAR. I wondered what he had had for breakfast and gave him 1/2 of my sandwich. Parents should look at what their children are EATING. Hyper activity, in many instances is caused by what a person eats or drinks for that matter. Poor kid...the parent gave the kid ritalin on a reguar basis and I can only assume CONTINUED to feed him sugar. STUPID.

Guest guest
What is the brand name? Ritalin works wonders for my daughter. We tried Concerta but it wore off at around 6-7pm which was bad for us if we were going away in the evening-chuch,etc. Metadate wears off at 3 pm but then we use a generic ritalin which lasts until bedtime.Metadate does cause to have "issues" such as a horrible bad mood but the generic takes care of that and she doesn't show any signs of coming off it. Elaine Our doc has prescribed Ritalin. The 1 a day dose. Anyone have feedback?

Guest guest
Just a little something to think about before using stimulants. My daugter, PDD, age 14 has seizures from Ritalin use at age 7. I know now that Ritalin increase Beta waves. Beta waves are our " flight or fight " response to stess and fear etc. We didn't know at the time why she reacted so strangely to Ritalin. She was so overfocused that she would spend hours picking fuzzys off her shirt and everyone elses. The seizures started while on her second trial of it and after stopping the drug they never went away. We know now that my daughter's BETA waves are elevated anyway and Ritalin put her over the edge. I would absolutely insist on an EEG to check the childs BETA waves. My understanding is that in true ADD, BETA waves are low, thus poor attention.. This is all just from my experience, but something to think about. Lynn
