Guest guest
I've had my son in 2 social skills groups. I did not find them particularly helpful, but I realize others may. My son falls anywhere from moderate to high functioning depending on the day/group. I felt he needed more interaction with typical peers. A smaller group size is ideal, with enough teachers. I felt the more moderate-severe kids benefitted more than mine. Again, just my experience. If they had a social skills group with 2 ASD kids (at roughly the same level) with 2 typical peers, then I would try that. I also felt there weren't enough actual social skills TEACHING going on. We started having a typical peer in one of our 1:1 sessions and that has helped him. We also signed him up for a "typical" preschool for 2 mornings a week next year. He will attend with his tutor. I'd also love to hear of others' experiences with social skills groups.AmyFrom: <lamoo@...>Subject: [ ] Social Skills Group Input Date: Tuesday, July 1, 2008, 10:39 AM Hi, I am looking for some input from those who have experience with having their ASD child in a social skills/therapy group. I am looking for both positive and negative experiences. There are many practices that offer these kinds of groups: Autism treatment centers with SLP's/OT's, individual SLP's as well as psychologists. I had always thought this fell more under the domain of an autism center, but now I'm seeing psychologists like Jay Berk and Hal Wildman offer these groups. The things I'm looking for would be self-regulation/ emotional regulation, appropriate behavior, etc. I am confused as to which direction to pursue. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks much
Guest guest
My problem is trying to find a social skills group in my sons age range (10). Every group I have looked into is for younger kids. Can anyone suggest a group for ages 10 and older? Thanks! -----Original Message----- From: Amy <basketdeals4u@...> Sent: Tue, 1 Jul 2008 12:46 pm Subject: Re: [ ] Social Skills Group Input I've had my son in 2 social skills groups. Guest guest
Check out www.MTECincorporated.com – they have some summer music therapy social skills groups. “Music & Sound”, all age ranges. Although the 10-week groups have already started, children can join at a prorated amount. From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of kellie0406@...
