Guest guest
Our local Y MCA (Medford NJ) has a summer camp program which also runs during holidays. They have a few high functioning special needs kids there. My son (AS) went for a day and loved it (BTW he liked the food too). They said they had no problems with him. He'll go two more days next week along with my DD. I was also told to look into some of the " religious " camps. Many cost more but can handle HFA ect. I hope this helps. Guest guest
I missed to original question for this, but wanted to let you know that Jim attended a week long sleepover camp especially for autistic children last summer near Indianapolis, IN. It was started by a mom of a boy(16) with Asperger's so she knows what she's doing. The web addy is: http://www.campawareness.com/. Typical Jim: I took him to visit and look around the week before. Sue showed us around herself and everywhere we went, Jim said, " Looks like fun. It's ok and I'M NOT COMING " ! About the 4th time this happened, she turned to me and said, " See, he'll do fine. " At the end, he said, " Yep. It was fun. I'm glad I came and I NOT coming back " . We'll see. I think that if you have waiver services, camp can be covered under respite care. Parents are also welcome to come along, visit, and/or volunteer to help. I stayed during the day to help fix food for the ones on special diets as Jim is on Feingold and there were a couple GF/CF. I had fun too! Feel free to post or e-mail me if anyone wants more info. We had a great time. Guest guest
, I guess this is not an answer. I intended to send Conner to overnight camp this summer as well. His little sister has been twice already and he feels left out. I found a camp I liked 20 miles from home, we even went there to " check it out " . However, his behavior was so anti-social, becoming more agressive, and lots of meltdowns since the Spring. We both decided overnight camp would be there next summer too. It's kind of funny ,last week he was on an inpatient psych unit, I considered that his overnight camp for Summer 2006. He got to do " cool " stuff, and did not meltdown up there for the staff. However yesterday and today I've got some " incrimating videos " of his less than desirable behaviors. I plan on sending a copy to the inpatient pdoc for her review. Sorry , I got off topic. I hope Corey does well. I know I had the " anti-social,group activities, not fitting in " concerns too. I do not suppose a call to the camp director would hurt to check on his progress. Some camp directors might consider that " wimpy and over- protective mom stuff " , but with our kids and their special needs WHO CARES what other people think anyway. We've learned that with public meltdowns- when the rest of the world knows and then proceeds to sometimes verbalize their opinions and answers. Let us know how he's doing, I'll keep you and him in my thoughts. Kim
