When parents learn that their child has a chronic illness or disability, they experience more losses than even they are aware. Most people cannot see the losses that families in these situations endure because our culture insists that the only real loss is the death of a loved one. This short sighted, yet consistent view of loss and grief leaves many families alone, and sometimes even unaware of the powerful and complicated losses they are experiencing that make a challenging situation even more hurtful and overwhelming than simply dealing with their child's illness or disability.

Shelden, MDiv will lead workshop participants through the journey of experiencing various types of loss at this interactive workshop. Ms. Shelden is the founder and director of Miriam's Way: Education and Support for All Loss and Grief. Miriam's Way recognizes and includes the many sources of loss and grief, and provides education and support with respect and compassion. Prior to Miriam's Way Ms. Shelden served for seven years as the Chaplain Coordinator for the Department of Pastoral Care in a children's hospital and Level I trauma center. During that time, and for an additional two years, she served as Chaplain to the PICU and Trauma Team. She has spoken at a variety of hospital functions, public school staff workshops/inservices, seminaries and in many churches in Ohio and Pennsylvania.
