News From ASO:

ASO forming Ohio Autism Advocacy Network - Join Now!

As you are aware, Autism Insurance Parity, HB170 is currently under consideration by the Ohio House Insurance Committee. The fall elections are coming and immediately following the elections it will be time to address next biennial budget for Ohio. Additionally, issues regularly come before the state legislature that impact individuals with autism, their families and those who work them throughout Ohio. And because of this, the Autism Society of Ohio needs your help.

We are in the process of putting together an autism advocacy network that has constituents in each of the districts of the members of the Ohio General Assembly, both the House and Senate. We are looking for advocates all around the state to help us with this effort.

You can volunteer to participate in two ways:

· Team Leader: Each Ohio district will have an assigned team leader who is responsible for carrying the key ASO/autism messages when meeting with the legislator (Representatives and Senators), coordinating testimony or letter writing for hearings, and for organizing the team members of their district, etc.

· Team Member: Each Ohio district will have several team members that are available to share their own personal ASO/autism story, to write letters when needed, and to ask from help from their neighbors/families/friends. Team members may choose specialize on certain topics – ie. autism insurance parity topic, special education funding, etc.

ASO is also developing a Legislative Advocacy Manual and will provide local training to constituent volunteer advocates.

If you are interested in participating in this effort, please send your Name, address, city,zip+4, phone, email address, House District Number and Senate District number and whether you are interested in being a “Team Leader†or a “Team Member†to askASO@.... Please put AUTISM ADVOCACY NETWORK in the subject line. To find your district numbers, visit www.legislature.state.oh.us and follow the directions under "Locating Legislators".

Federal Update

The Senate Passed the ADA Amendments Act!

ASA supported this legislation!September 11, 2008Thanks to all of your grassroots support, the Senate just passed The ADA Amendments Act (S. 3406) by unanimous consent. The bill included over 77 bipartisan co-sponsors.Because the Senate bill differs slightly from the House version (HR 3195), the House will need to take up the ADA Amendments Act again. Given limited time, it is likely the House will vote on the Senate version as early as next week. Once both houses pass identical bills, we anticipate the President will sign the bill shortly thereafter.

The ADA Amendments Act will correct narrow court interpretations that have restricted ADA coverage in the workplace, and weakened coverage for individuals with developmental disabilities, diabetes, epilepsy, serious heart conditions, and cancer. The act will also clarify responsibilities for employers. It enjoys wide support on both sides of the aisle, as well as among employers, civil rights and disability advocates, who have formed an uncommon alliance to support this legislation.

About the Hidden Curriculum:In this DVD, Myles discusses, using numerous examples - many of them humorous - the major topics of the book of the same title, co-authored by L. Trautman and Ronda L. Schelvan. The DV D offers practical suggestions and advice for how to teach and learn those subtle messages that most people seem to pick up almost automatically but that have to be directly taught to individuals with social-cognitive challenges. Given the serious consequences that can befall a person who violates a social rule, the strategies discussed here make this a much-needed resource.

We are currently looking for members who will engage our participants in a variety of community-based service and recreation programs in the Columbus area. What is Young Adult Transition Corps?

Young Adult Transition Corps (YATC) is a one-of-a-kind AmeriCorps program of the Ohio State University Nisonger Center on Excellence in Developmental Disabilities. YATC is dedicated to serving young adults with disabilities and their families and promoting successful transitions as these young adults enter adult life.

AmeriCorps/YATC members collaborate with high school students with disabilities to develop ongoing service learning projects. Members also engage young adults with disabilities in other educational and community-based programs in the Columbus area that promote community service, community access, and social skill development, three areas critical to successful transition.

Who are YATC members?

YATC members come from a variety of backgrounds and include high school graduates, current college students (undergraduate or graduate), or college graduates. We are looking for people with a strong desire to work with people with disabilities and to give back to their community.

How does YATC benefit youth with disabilities?

The support provided by YATC members helps participants become more engaged in their communities and confident in social situations. Participants learn the importance of giving back to their communities and gain the work and life skills that come with community service. Participants also learn about the resources available in their communities, and how to access those resources. In addition, participants engage in team building activities and social events that encourage friendship and social skill development.

Presidential Candidates Debate on Autism

This week the USAAA Weekly News is including a special article of the presidential candidates' stances on autism.

McCain has worked with issues on Autism Spectrum Disorders during his time in the Senate, such as when he cosponsored the Combating Autism Act of 2006. " McCain is very concerned about the rising incidence of autism among America's children and has continually supported research into its causes and treatment," his campaign said. "He believes that federal research efforts should support broad approaches to understanding the factors that may play a role in the incidence of autism, including factors in our environment, for both prevention and treatment purposes."

As president, McCain would work to advance federal research into autism, promote early screening, and identify better treatment options. Click here to read his plan on combating autism in America.

Barack Obama has set forth a plan specifically on Autism Spectrum Disorders. "Some conditions like autism don't appear until age two, so infant screening is not enough," he said. "And to meet the needs of the growing numbers of Americans with autism, we need a comprehensive approach that includes not just screening, but early intervention, research, and education services."

As president, Obama would appoint a federal ASD Coordinator to oversee all federal ASD efforts, fully fund the Combating Autism Act and other federal autism research initiatives, support special needs education for children with ASD, and support universal screening. Click here to read his full plan, and click here to see his updated plan to empower Americans with disabilities.

Ask Medicare Caregiver Initiative

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is launching an initiative this fall to begin a conversation with people who provide care for a loved one, friend or neighbor. The Ask Medicare initiative will provide information, tools and materials to assist the caregiver and their loved ones in making informed healthcare decisions.

There are over 44.4 million Americans, more than one in five adults, who provide unpaid care to a loved one valued at a staggering $350 billion (in 2006) each year. It is important to raise national awareness of the critical service provided by caregivers in communities across the country. We hope to help these caregivers navigate through the tools that can significantly improve their life and that of their loved one.

Most people don't think of themselves as caregivers; all they know is that someone that they care about needs help. The caregiver's work is exhausting, stressful, but essential - and far too often, unrecognized. CMS knows that caregiving takes a substantial amount of advocacy, energy and knowledge.

Information to Help You Care for Others

On September 18th, CMS will launch a caregiver initiative through a live webcast with Acting Administrator Kerry Weems, and a number of key partner organizations at the Newseum in Washington DC. During the webcast, Mr. Weems will provide an overview of the initiative and take questions from caregivers, partners, the media, and other stakeholders through electronically submitted questions. After the webcast, Medicare's newly designed webpage will go live at www.medicare.gov/caregiver. Through the webpage, CMS will provide accurate and unbiased information to caregivers about Medicare. The new tools will provide information about what the Medicare program covers and how to access other important resources to help in their care. Through the website, CMS will feature key partner organizations that help caregivers and beneficiaries through links directly to the organizations. The site will also include personal stories of caregivers in the community.

In November CMS will launch an e-newsletter for caregivers. E-mailed bi-monthly to individuals who sign up, the newsletter will provide information on important dates (i.e. open enrollment), changes in the programs (i.e. changes in coverage of certain services), and general basic information to caregivers about the Medicare program.

Through our website and electronic newsletter CMS would like to build a relationship with caregivers to help streamline caring for Medicare beneficiaries and hopefully, lighten the load of caregiving.

Ninth Annual Multiple Perspectives on Access, Inclusion & Disability: Change, Challenge, & Collaboration April 28 and 29, 2009The Ohio State University's Columbus Campus

Session Proposals Are Due November 1, 2008 - Student Posters Due March 30, 2008

The Ninth Annual Multiple Perspectives conference continues the university's efforts to bring together a diverse audience to explore disability as both an individual experience and social reality that cuts across typical divisions of education & employment; scholarship & service; business & government; race, gender & ethnicity. This year’s theme “Change, Challenge & Collaboration†reflects the critical place in history we occupy.

Between the last conference and this call for papers the United Nations has adopted the Convention on Disability, Congress passed a new GI bill benefiting veterans with disabilities and the Higher Education Opportunity Act which includes a significant focus on disability; the Access Board is proposing changes in Section 508, the Department of Justice is in the final stages of a comprehensive review and update of the regulations for the ADA; and the ADA Amendments of 2008 are working their way through Congress.

The importance of leading for change will be highlighted and critical questions will be addressed such as: What does it take to plan, implement, and evaluate RtI systems for all students? How we get school personnel on board? What’s the difference between buy-in versus ownership? Where do we start and how do we prioritize the work? How do we know we are really implementing RtI? New tool for autism education

This is Karl , creator of the DT Trainer, and this is one of my few blasts per year informing the autism community on our continued progress.

Thanks for your support of the DT Trainer as we are now in over 800 school districts, 220 private schools and service providers, and thousands of homes. I will continue to expand the DT Trainer to cover more topics and a wider developmental range (currently the developmental range is 2-9 years old).

However, there is another area of learning that is critical for our kids. There is 15 to 20 years of research showing how video modeling increases acquisition rates across a wide range of topics. Video modeling materials have been available for 10 - 15 years, and yet I was amazed that this powerful teaching method is impacting few of our kids.

Looking into this disconnect, I discovered that video modeling media has been released to be played in standard media players starting with video types, and now computer based media players. The problem is that video modeling is not just about playing videos, but is about the management of the process. Regular media players lack the capabilities to organize the materials to facilitate quick access to a student's specific tasks in a teaching situation. Trying to find and use up a piece of video is clumsy, cumbersome and impractical in a fluid teaching situation. Standard media players also lack the support for task analysis (breaking down tasks), sequences, transitions from video to images, transitions from images to text, data collection, visual schedules, and many other useful features to fully exploit the power of video modeling across a wide range of students and skills.

I set out to fix this situation and created the first designed player for video modeling the Activity Trainer. There is a short 2 minute video that introduces the Activity Trainer at www.dttrainer.com/atpromovideo. This tool is feature rich being driven by both research and feedback from experts in video modeling. The Activity Trainer allows users to create their own activities, and we are developing a Skills Library that includes skills in the categories of academic, daily living, communicating non-verbal initiation, recreation, social and speech. We are reaching out to video modeling creators for third party libraries which customers could add to the Activity Trainer. We will also reach out to Universities and others for a community library.

Our goal has been to offer a robust, easy to use tool that makes video modeling practical for school and home and that is affordable for schools and parents. We had to go way out on the limb financially to create this tool, but I felt that it is important for our kids to get access to the power of video modeling. I hope the community will download our free trial and either provide feedback or purchase to benefit your child or students and to help support this work. The work has been endorsed by Dr. Gerhardt of the Organization for Autism Research. (See our web site) We have thus far released about 167 activities in the developmental range of 2 to 9 years old. We are currently working on over 60 more and will continue to expand our skills library.

There is a short 2 minute video that introduces the Activity Trainer at www.dttrainer.com/atpromovideo. Visit our web site (www.dttrainer.com) for more information on the Activity Trainer and to download a free 30 day trial.
