Guest guest
Hi Becky, That's a good question you asked and just to let you know, the Autism biomedical group is currently discussing B-12 shots and most likely can answer all your questions. Actually, you can check the archieves on their site as well and you might be able to find answers without waiting on replies. If you like, I could forward your email to them and they could just send replies to you personally or here is a link to join the Biomedical Online group and check their archieves and resend your email to the group. (They should have a wealth of email archieves on all you asked about: Autism-Biomed-Ohio Yours Truly, n In a message dated 5/4/09 9:52:08 AM, rwulfe@... writes: Has anyone seen any positive results using a DAN! doctor, B12 shots, etc. if their child never had any real physical ailments (e.g., bloating, diarrhea, etc.)? My son (who is now 9, HFA/hyperlexia) is rarely sick (even when his sister gets sick, he doesn't), never had ear infections, never had bloating, etc. I'm wondering if these treatments would help his reading comprehension, his OCD, etc. He's high-functioning and has always been in a typical classroom. He has a resource teacher who helps him with math and comprehension. He always was "on track" when he was small and we'd go to the well-baby checkups. He didn't have reactions from any vaccines; however, in hindsight, I would definietly have done it all differently. I was the one who had to push my pediatrician because his odd behavior (stimming), early spelling and reading (not the typical words like mom, dad, etc. but logos - e.g., the Corporation of Public Broadcasting, Toyota, MGM, Columbia Pictures, etc.), not interacting appropriately within his playgroup (at 3 he should have been grabbing toys, etc. not being such a "good boy" sitting on the couch reading - you know what I mean). Finally, he thought we should get him assessed (duh!). Anyway ... We didn't have to deal with the more severe autistic behaviors that sometimes occur (loss of speech, head banging, etc.). He has never needed as much sleep as a NT child and he still wakes up every night and comes into our bed (yes, this is very old - lol). We are vegetarians (octo/lacto) but I did try eliminating dairy when he was a toddler to help w/sleep (before I realized he had hyperlexia/autism) and it didn't seem to do anything. I was wondering if anyone had a high-functioning kid who didn't have any severe physical ailments as I mentioned above and STILL saw positive results from B12 shots, supplements, etc.? Results such as less stimming, better sleep, less odd behaviors, etc.? Thanks in advance for any input you have! Guest guest
Just wanted to add my two cents. While others have had great results with biomed, it hasn't been the case for our guy. Provided, we haven't done consistent YEARS of biomed, either. GFCF worked for him (he was later dx'd with celiac) from a nutritional and medical standpoint; it did nothing to reduce or eliminate any autistic behaviors or tendencies. We've tried various supplements, B12 shots & cream (on no less than 4 separate occasions), the GFCF diet, nystatin, diflucan, glutathione, vitamins. We have not chelated, yet. We are in the midst of a biomed break b/c we are exploring various medications with him. Once he stabilizes on a med (we are hopefully there), we will go back to biomed. We have considered & will continue to consider chelation. I have met many wonderful people whose children have benefitted from biomed and others whose children did not. Some parents recognized this and others did not. I have one friend who was very thorough & consistent in her biomed treatments (she even chelated), yet her son really made no significant progress or seemed to become " healthier " . She stopped the biomed and it appears to have made no difference with her son. Our son is like yours--except he sleeps great. No outward medical symptoms, even with celiac he showed no medical signs (he severely self-limited to gluten & casein foods, but didn't have diarrhea or constipation or bloating). So I guess the answer is....it depends. Feel free to contact me offline if you'd like to chat more about it. Guest guest
Thanks Ellen, , Amy, and n (hope I didn't forget anyone). I think I'm going to try to investigate this further. I remember when I first got the dx of autism (over six years ago) for my son I looked into this and what little I tried didn't seem to do anything and, since we didn't have any real physical issues, I thought we were one of the ones where it wouldn't work. But, I never went to a specialist and maybe I should. Thanks again for all the input!! Becky Hi Becky, It's best to find a specialist who is either DAN doctor or one who knows all about biomedical issues in autism. Alot of specialists out there don't know about the effects of autism onset by the order of disorders, whichever they may be as it seems alot of children have variable reasons for the symptoms. Let me know if you need help locating a good specialist.
