Guest guest
Thanks Sierra - when my son was first dx'd and before, I was on the computer researching what seemed like 24/7 trying to figure it all out. Then you seem to get so busy with working, other kids, etc. that I slowed down a lot. Especially since we moved and found a great school with wonderful resources. It took a broken wrist and some time off work to get me to start reading again. :-) I think I'm going to pursue finding a DAN! doctor here in NE Ohio. Has anyone had insurance help pay? We have so many medical bill that we're still trying to pay off and we maxed out our home eq loan. I would like to get insurance to help. God forbid insurance actually helps pay medical bills - lol! I have heard of quite a few kids like this who improve to varying degrees- there are so many possible factors that can be underlying, and for some the neurological signs are the only visible ones. OCD is something that often responds well to biomed. Not all DAN!s are equally knowledgeable, so if you feel that your child is not the "typical biomed kid", I would shop around and ask lots of questions before settling on one. A DAN! does not need to be local. As for not seeing results taking out dairy- it's possible that dairy isn't the culprit (for some kids it's other foods, such as corn or soy, or maybe not a food), it's likely that if he is sensitive to dairy he is also sensitive to other things as well (such as gluten), and for some kids you see no benefit until you remove all the offending food. Dairy is very hard to remove as it is in many things that you wouldn't expect, for example nearly all soy cheese has dairy in it. For OCD, a low histamine diet can sometimes help (if high histamine is the cause of the OCD).So, in short, there are quite a few kids whose behaviors and neurological functioning improve on biomed when there aren't lots of outwardly visible signs of health issues.HTH,-Sierra>> Has anyone seen any positive results using a DAN! doctor, B12 shots, etc. if their child never had any real physical ailments (e.g., bloating, diarrhea, etc.)? My son (who is now 9, HFA/hyperlexia) is rarely sick (even when his sister gets sick, he doesn't), never had ear infections, never had bloating, etc. I'm wondering if these treatments would help his reading comprehension, his OCD, etc. He's high-functioning and has always been in a typical classroom. He has a resource teacher who helps him with math and comprehension. > > He always was "on track" when he was small and we'd go to the well-baby checkups. He didn't have reactions from any vaccines; however, in hindsight, I would definietly have done it all differently. I was the one who had to push my pediatrician because his odd behavior (stimming), early spelling and reading (not the typical words like mom, dad, etc. but logos - e.g., the Corporation of Public Broadcasting, Toyota, MGM, Columbia Pictures, etc.), not interacting appropriately within his playgroup (at 3 he should have been grabbing toys, etc. not being such a "good boy" sitting on the couch reading - you know what I mean). Finally, he thought we should get him assessed (duh!). Anyway ...> > We didn't have to deal with the more severe autistic behaviors that sometimes occur (loss of speech, head banging, etc.). He has never needed as much sleep as a NT child and he still wakes up every night and comes into our bed (yes, this is very old - lol).> > We are vegetarians (octo/lacto) but I did try eliminating dairy when he was a toddler to help w/sleep (before I realized he had hyperlexia/autism) and it didn't seem to do anything. I was wondering if anyone had a high-functioning kid who didn't have any severe physical ailments as I mentioned above and STILL saw positive results from B12 shots, supplements, etc.? Results such as less stimming, better sleep, less odd behaviors, etc.?> > Thanks in advance for any input you have!> > Becky> >
