WORLD VIEW REPORT December 21, 1999 Monsanto Plans One Merger, Ends Another By Cheryl Rainford, News Editor, @griculture Online Fresh on the heels of news that several growers are suing Monsanto over GMO issues related to antitrust matters, Monsanto and Pharmacia & Upjohn have announced plans to merge. The move would create a global leader in pharmaceuticals and one of the world's leading fully integrated agricultural businesses. The companies estimate the new entity, which is yet to be named, will have 1999 sales of $17 billion with a market capitalization of around $50 billion. The deal would be a " merger-of-equals. " It has been unanimously approved by the board of directors of each company, and is expected to close in the second quarter of 2000, subject to approval by both companies' shareholders, governmental reviews and other conditions.
