ABA

takes what we know about behavior and uses it to bring about positive change (Applied).

Behaviors are defined in observable and measurable terms in order to assess

change over time (Behavior). The behavior is analyzed within the

environment to determine what factors are influencing the behavior (Analysis).

Applied behavior is the third of the four domains of behavior analysis, the

other three being, behaviorism, experimental analysis of behavior and professional

practice of behavior analysis.

We

intend for this group site to serve as a means for linking our local autism

community with the endless sea of students here at The Ohio State

University. This site will become a vehicle for which families can

post want ads for therapists as well as a means for which available Ohio State

students can post want ads for employers.

Our goal is simply to open the lines of communication between the

Columbus autism community and the students of Ohio State, with hopes that

families will have greater access to potential service providers.

Autism Speaks Endorses Ohio Autism Insurance Bill

House Bill 8 Would End

Health Care Discrimination Against Children with Autism by Requiring Coverage

of Diagnosis and Treatment

Columbus, OH (February 19, 2009) ¡V

Autism Speaks, the nation's largest autism advocacy organization, today announced

its support for House Bill 8, the autism insurance reform bill. The

legislation would require private health insurance companies to cover the

screening, diagnosis, testing and treatment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Sponsored in the Ohio State House of Representatives by State Representative

Ted Celeste (D-24) and Representative Garland (D-20), HB 8 includes

coverage of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), an evidence-based,

medically-necessary autism therapy.

World

Autism Awareness Day ¡V April

2, 2009

December

18, 2007, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution 62/139, tabled

by the State of Qatar, which declares April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day

(WAAD) in perpetuity. Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Missned,

Consort of His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the Emir of the

State of Qatar, supported the campaign for a World Autism Awareness Day through

the current 62nd UN General Assembly Session, garnering consensus support from

all United Nations Member States.

This UN resolution is one of only three official disease-specific United

Nations Days and will bring the world's attention to autism, a pervasive

disorder that affects tens of millions. The World Autism Awareness Day

resolution encourages all Member States to take measures to raise awareness

about autism throughout society and to encourage early diagnosis and early

intervention. It further expresses deep concern at the prevalence and high rate

of autism in children in all regions of the world and the consequent

developmental challenges.

World Autism Awareness Day will shine a bright light on autism as a growing

global health crisis. WAAD activities will help to increase and develop world

knowledge of the autism epidemic and will impart information regarding the

importance of early diagnosis and early intervention. Additionally, WAAD will

celebrate the unique talents and skills of persons with autism and will be a

day when individuals with autism are warmly welcomed and embraced in community

events around the globe.

By bringing together autism organizations all around the world, we will give a

voice to the millions of individuals worldwide who are undiagnosed,

misunderstood and looking for help. Please join us in our effort to make this

possible. http://www.worldautismawarenessday.org/site/c.egLMI2ODKpF/b.3917065/k.BE58/Home.htm?sid=213681827
