Whoa guys!

The school secretaries are not the ones you need to be

focusing on! For the most part, they have no idea what

they are even talking about. They are just spouting the

rehearsed lines that have been given to them by the

health services staff. They do not write policy.

They are just " good little soldiers " and jump through the

hoops that have been given to them. Educating them

will really not have much impact.

The school nurses are the ones we must reach.

If we don't reach them, we will run into a wall every time.

Remember, the school nurse is the one who sets the

tone for the entire school's attitude toward vaccination.

That's where we need to focus our attention.

There are now SEVEN school nurses in our area who

are " enlightened " and supporting the parents in

filing exemptions. Guess what? The policies have

changed, the newspaper notices have changed and

the " friendly acceptance of exemption " is present

(even from the school secretaries).

Keep trying. Use a professional approach with the

focus on helping kids and a school nurse can't resist

listening. Provide solid resources that have good

documentation and make her your friend. Avoid the

sensational when first approaching. Talk about the

impact on kids. They all want to help kids. Most of

all, remember----she (or he) truly believes vaccination

is saving the kid from disease. Your job is to plant

enough doubt or curiosity to get her to read the

truth.
