Kirkman's New Product List is GrowingA Review of Kirkman's New Products By Larry NewmanChief Operating OfficerTechnical and Regulatory Affairs Kirkman Group, Inc. Kirkman® has made a number of formulation changes during the last month. Here is a brief discussion of these changes. In Kirkman’s Detox-Aid Advanced Formula, the N-acetyl cysteine has been removed and replaced with alpha-Ketoglutaric acid. The change was based on new scientific information which indicates that for certain individuals undergoing detoxification, N-acetyl cysteine can cause undesirable side effects. The alpha-Ketoglutaric acid gets the same job done without the side effects. Many Kirkman® customers ask that we use the most natural ingredients possible and eliminate chemical-type ingredients when formulating our products. Kirkman® listens to our customers and, when possible, makes ingredient changes to satisfy these requests. Stevia is a natural noncaloric herb. It is native to Paraguay, but now is also grown in Japan and China. It has been used worldwide for centuries as a flavor enhancer and an ingredient in drinks and teas. Kirkman® has changed some of our formulations to include stevia in the spirit of using more natural ingredients. Here is a list of those products: Buffered Vitamin C Powder - Flavored - Bio-Max Series Vitamin C 250 mg Chewable Tablets Coenzyme Q10 100 mg Chewable Tablets Calcium with Vitamin D-3 Powder - Flavored Super Nu-Thera® Powder w/o Vitamins A & D - Flavored Kirkman will be changing the following products to contain stevia in the near future: Grape Extract Chewable Tablets DMAE 50 mg Chewable Wafers Super Cranberry Extract 100 mg Tablets Spectrum Complete Powder - Flavored B-Complex with CoEnzymes Pro-Support Powder CoEnzyme Q10 25 mg Chewable Tablets TMG with Folic Acid and B-12 Powder Buffered Magnesium Glycinate® Powder - Bio-Max Series Super Nu-Thera® Powder - Flavored Super Nu-Thera with 25 mg P-5-P Powder - Flavored When making these changes, we have tried to keep taste, texture, color and other characteristics exactly the same as in the old formulations. In most cases no differences will be noticeable. Trial sizes will be available for the new formulations if customers wish to try them before ordering larger sizes. Exciting new products are coming soon. An advanced adult multiple vitamin/mineral product is on the way which includes resveratrol and coenzyme Q10. Also, an advanced Bifido complex probiotic will be replacing our current Bifido complex in the near future. The new product will contain five strains of Bifidobacterium, 15 billion colony forming units in total, and will be legal on the SCD diet. Sun, Sun, Sun - Here it Comes! Why Kirkman's Sunscreen is Better Than MostKirkman® markets a revolutionary sunscreen product, Kirkman Kleen™ SPF 25 Sunscreen (Unscented) - Hypoallergenic, which is hypoallergenic, clinically tested, SPF verified (at 25) and can be used repeatedly during the course of a day without the typical potential irritation many sunscreens cause. Kirkman® has chosen the safest and most effective sun blocking agents available and a group of added ingredients which enhance the gentleness and skin conditioning qualities of the product. Kirkman’s sunscreen is unscented, containing no perfume ingredients which often lead to sensitivity reactions. The majority of sunscreen products on the market contain titanium dioxide, an ingredient which special needs individuals with compromised immune systems need to avoid. Check your current sunscreen product label to see if this chemical is in your product. Skin contact with this ingredient should be avoided, but it is used in many sunscreen products by the cosmetic industry because it is very inexpensive compared to safer screening agents. The ingredients in Kirkman Kleen SPF 25 Suncreen (Unscented) - Hypoallergenic include: Purified water USP Zinc Oxide USP, a safe and effective sunscreening agent with skin restorative properties. You may recognize it from other skin healing products it is contained in, such as calamine lotion or Desitin ointment. Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, another sunscreening agent which is known for its low potential to sensitize skin or act as a photoallergen. In combination with the zinc oxide above, Kirkman® has the ultimate safe and effective sunscreen combination. Meadowfoam seed oil, which is an oil with unique chemical properties that make it one of the most stable vegetable oils known. It resists oxidation from the sun and also provides ultra-violet protection. Its stability ensures that Kirkman’s sunscreen product will remain on the skin for long periods of time. Jojoba oil, which is cold pressed from the nuts of the jojoba tree. This ingredient is actually a waxy oil which contains protein and minerals. It resembles human sebum, the natural coating our body produces to protect the skin. Jojoba helps dissolve clogged pores and restores skin to its natural pH. It is not greasy and absorbs quickly. Organic coconut oil, which is known for its cleansing, nourishing and soothing properties on the skin. It also contributes antioxidants to keep cells healthy. Kosher vegetable glycerine, which has soothing and moisturizing properties. Emulsifying wax, which is a plant-based wax necessary for the emulsion formation which gives the lotion its smooth texture. Stearic acid is a wax with emollient properties which gives the lotion texture and body. Vitamin E, a vitamin with known skin conditioning properties as well as antioxidant properties. It aids in keeping skin cells healthy. Xanthan gum, a natural viscosity building vegetable gum. Citric acid adjusts pH while also brightening the skin. The preservative system of EDTA and phenoxyethanol, which has the least sensitivity of the preservative systems available for such formulations.Kirkman® encourages you to evaluate the ingredients present in sunscreen products. Sunscreens are very important in protecting the skin from harmful ultraviolet rays, and you should be using one that consists of safe, nontoxic ingredients. We feel that ours is unsurpassed in these areas. Kirkman’s sunscreen has been clinically tested for hypoallergenicity by an independent dermatological laboratory. Results of these tests are available on request. To Purchase Kirkman Kleen™ Sunscreen SPF 25 (Unscented) - Hypoallergenic CLICK HERE Can You Get the Vitamin D You Need From the Sun? The skin is the largest organ in the human body. Vitamin D-3 − cholecalciferol − is produced in skin exposed to ultraviolet-B rays from sunlight. Midday sun is best. If you are fair skinned, then ten minutes of midday sun with much skin exposed and no sunblock is said to be sufficient. In the winter, it is hard to produce enough vitamin D from the sun in many latitudes. If you cannot get a sufficient amount and quality of sun exposure per day due to factors such as season, location, or weather, you could consider supplementing with vitamin D-3 because D-3 is the naturally occurring form of vitamin D such as that which the body produces in response to sunlight. Kirkman offers hypoallergenic Vitamin D-3 (cholecalciferol) capsules in 400 International Units (IU) or 1000 IU potencies. The 100% recommended daily value for this nutrient is 400 IU, though scientific evidence is mounting that many individuals need more than that. Good dietary sources also include a high-quality cod liver oil and salmon. Vitamin D's metabolic product is called calcitriol, which is a secosteroid hormone (not a vitamin). Vitamin D's functions include: targets over 2000 genes in the body, including those regulating cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis promotes calcium absorption in the gut maintains serum calcium and phosphate concentrations enables mineralization of bone affects bone growth and remodeling modulation of neuromuscular and immune function reduction of inflammation. Vitamin D deficiency has been implicated in at least 30 health conditions, including impaired bone mineralization, rickets, and osteomalacia. Those who may be at a high risk for deficiency include the elderly, individuals with darker skin, and individuals with inflammatory bowel disease. With particular regard to youths, a study in the American Academy of Pediatrics' journal Pediatrics reported: "It is now recommended that all infants and children, including adolescents, have a minimum daily intake of 400 IU of vitamin D beginning soon after birth. The current recommendation replaces the previous recommendation of a minimum daily intake of 200 IU/day of vitamin D supplementation beginning in the first 2 months after birth and continuing through adolescence. These revised guidelines for vitamin D intake for healthy infants, children, and adolescents are based on evidence from new clinical trials and the historical precedence of safely giving 400 IU of vitamin D per day in the pediatric and adolescent population. New evidence supports a potential role for vitamin D in maintaining innate immunity and preventing diseases such as diabetes and cancer. (Wagner CL, Greer FR, and the Section on Breastfeeding and Committee on Nutrition. Prevention of rickets and vitamin D deficiency in infants, children, and adolescents. Pediatrics 2008;122:1142-1152. http://www.aap.org/new/VitaminDreport.pdf). A test called a blood calcidiol level is available to determine vitamin D nutritional status. Cool Down With ThisThe Versatile "Frozen Banana" Treat By Mika Bradford Certified NutritionistKirkman Group, Inc. If you're looking for fresh, naturally sweet treats that will take the edge off of summer's heat, we have a few ideas for you. You don’t have to sacrifice something sweet and cold if you are avoiding dairy and grain products. Here’s one chilled treat that will make any health conscious individual happy!Frozen Bananas on a StickYes, that’s right; I said frozen bananas on a stick. This treat is great alone or dipped in chocolate and rolled in nuts. Here’s what you’ll need: 1 bunch of ripe bananas 5-10 Popsicle sticks Plastic cling wrap Foil 1 bag of Paskesz Real Chocolate Chips (non-dairy) 1 bag of chopped nuts of your choice 1 roll of wax paperPeel bananas, then place a Popsicle stick in the banana like you would when making corny dogs. Wrap each individual banana in the clear cling wrap and then wrap in foil. Place the bananas in the freezer until frozen solid. The frozen bananas can be eaten just as you would a regular Popsicle, or you can give them a little kick! Frozen Bananas on a Stick with a Kick: Chocolate-dipped BananasFor chocolate-dipped bananas, you will need a double boiler, or simply place one smaller boiling pan over a larger pan that has 3-4 inches of water in it. Place ½ of the bag of Paskesz chocolate chips in the top pan and heat the water below to a rolling boil. Be sure to stir the chocolate frequently until it reaches a smooth consistency. Place a 12-inch section of wax paper on the counter, and then sprinkle chopped nuts across the wax paper. The more nuts you cover the wax paper with, the more you will have on the banana. If you want fewer nuts, you can sprinkle them directly on the chocolate dipped banana. Now pull 2-3 frozen bananas from the freezer, unwrap them and begin covering each banana with the melted chocolate using a tablespoon. Once covered, let each banana set for 1-2 minutes and then begin rolling in the nuts. Once this is done, you can begin to enjoy your cool treat, or wrap it once again to enjoy at a later time. You can find Paskesz chocolate chips in the gluten- and casein-free foods section of our website at www.kirkmangroup.com Reminder to Our Customers Probiotics Have A Special Shipping Schedule in SummerHot and humid weather can diminish the potencies of probiotics.
