In our Speaker Spotlight today, we want to recognize four of our upcoming conference speakers who are fathers of children affected by autism.

Speaker SpotlightAn in Depth Look Into Dietary Interventions and Digestive/Gastrointestinal Problems

Phil DeMio, MD is board-certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. He received his M.D. from the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine with honors in Neurosurgery, Endocrinology/Metabolism, Advanced OB/GYN, and Advanced Internal Medicine. Dr. DeMio has been a faculty member at several teaching hospitals including Case Western University School of Medicine and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He is accredited by the Teaching System of U.S. Armed Forces Medical Core and his career includes an emphasis on toxicology. Dr. DeMio is currently the Medical Director for the Whole Health and

Wellness Centers located in Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio. His practice focuses on the diagnosis and treatment for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Dr. DeMio's practice includes primary care and integrative medicine/toxicology for children and adults. The Centers are the largest participant in a research program regarding the use of multiple enzyme preparations. He has also emphasized other broad issues. "We must address the immune system in every child so that this major piece of the biological aspects of Autism Spectrum Disorders can be treated," said Dr. DeMio.

Ongoing research also emphasizes early diagnosis including methods to identify at-risk children before symptoms develop, along with helping families prepare for subsequent pregnancies. Dr. DeMio is Chief Medical Officer for US Autism and Asperger Association.

Dr. DeMio will be presenting "An in Depth Look Into Dietary Interventions and Digestive / Gastrointestinal Problems," on Saturday, July 11 at the USAAA 2009 International Conference in Los Angeles, California. Dr. DeMio, Chairman & Executive Director of the American Medical Autism Board® (AMAB) will also present a thorough overview of the principles and practice of Biomedical Treatment of ASD's and other developmental disorders at the AMAB Practitioner Overview Course, for MD's, DO's, and other healthcare practitioners, Sunday, July 12. Speaker SpotlightStan Kurtz, President of Generation Rescue, to present at USAAA

Stan Kurtz, is President of McCarthy and Jim Carrey's Autism Organization - Generation Rescue and is on the Board of Directors. Stan Kurtz is dad to Ethan, who recovered from an autism diagnosis. Stan recovered himself from symptoms of ADHD and IBS while he was working on therapies for his son. Stan has presented at the USAAA 2006 and 2007 International Conferences and other regional USAAA conferences. Stan innovated the MB12 Nasal Spray therapy and recently created the new revitaPOP, a lingual lollipop administration of MB12 that works without a prescription. Stan is the former owner of Children's Corner School in Van Nuys, California, a unique school that includes special needs children in the classroom and focuses on research and health as a foundation for child development. Stan is on the USAAA Advisory Board. He is is a parent, teacher and independent researcher.

Speaker SpotlightMitochondrial Structure, Oxidative Stress and Autism

Van Dyke, MD is a board certified family physician who became involved in autism when his son was diagnosed in 2004. He graduated from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and did his residency at the University of Virginia. He worked with Dr Mumper (Medical Director of Defeat Autism Now!) at the Advocates for Children Clinic (now the Rimland Center) for three years before moving to the Wisconsin Integrative Hyperbaric Center last year. He has special interest in GI issues, diet, HBOT, mitochondrial dysfunction and treating medical problems of family members of affected children. He has also completed

The Institute for Functional Medicine's clinician training course, applying similar principles used in treating autism to complex chronic conditions in adults.

Lawrence P. Kaplan, PhD is a parent of child affected by autism spectrum disorders. Dr. Kaplan 's work in autism evolved in 1994 when his son was diagnosed with PDD-NOS. He founded a non-profit charitable organization that was one of the first organizations to offer assistance to special education programs in the public school system and provide educational programs for parents who have children with ASD. Drawing on his decade long tenure in professional and collegiate sports, he created a "team approach" to develop a parent-physician partnership that has been presented at national and international autism conferences. This innovative

concept led to authoring the book, "Diagnosis Autism: Now What? 10 Steps to Improve Treatment Outcomes; A Parent-Physician Team Approach."

Dr. Kaplan 's work in autism evolved in 1994 when his son was diagnosed with PDD-NOS.

The 1994 non-profit organization evolved into the US Autism & Asperger Association, Inc. (USAAA) in 2005 with a mission to enhance the quality of life of individuals and their families/caregivers touched by autism spectrum disorders. Dr. Kaplan was chief investigator for the first study on early diagnosis of ASD.
