Congress Speaks Out on ThimerosalLandmark Leiberman Letter A letter made public this week from eight members of the House and Senate to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) is making headlines, and with good reason. After years of hard work from parents across the country to focus Congressional attention on the thimerosal/autism link, this may finally become a reality. The offices of Senator ph Lieberman and several other lawmakers managed to pass important language as part of a Labor/HHS appropriations bill recommending a committee be formed to evaluate the need for independent research of the Vaccine Safety Datalink, which has never been fully accessed by anyone outside the CDC. A growing number of parents are convinced that the CDC will never be able to appropriately research the VSD because of the agency’s conflicts of interest and possible culpability in allowing an entire generation of children to be overexposed to mercury through vaccines. The letter, addressed to NIEHS director, Dr. Schwartz, is forceful in urging that the NIEHS direct its efforts towards finding answers for the one in 166 children now diagnosed with autism. This is encouraging news for us all, and a testament to the fact that Congress is listening to us. We will all need to be keeping watch on this situation to see that it receives and maintains the attention it deserves. The full letter is available here: http://www.a-champ.org/Congressionalletter2-22-06.html We offer our sincere thanks to the Congressional and Senate leaders who worked on the legislation and endorsed the letter to the NIEHS, and congratulate Bobbie Manning for a great job in communicating with the relevant offices. To everyone who has spent countless hours over the years in faxing, writing, calling, and meeting with your legislators, please accept our heartfelt thanks. Your efforts are making a difference! NAA Board Elects New Chairperson We are pleased to announce the election of Bothwell as Chairman of the Board of Directors of NAA. 's 2-year-term as chair began on March 15th. She takes over the chairmanship from NAA founding board member Bono. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to for her exceptional guidance and leadership during the last 3 years. Bothwell has been a board member of NAA for 2 years. She works full-time as a paralegal and office manager of the California office of the law firm of Waters & Kraus. has worked in the legal field since coming to the United States at age 19 in 1982. She is originally from Coventry, England, but now resides in Long Beach, California. She is married to Bruce, an attorney, and has three children: Will (aged 12 and autistic), Katrina (age 10 diagnosed with autism, but now recovered) and Jillian (age 8 and seemingly typical, whatever that is). When Will was diagnosed with autism in 1995, quit her job and dedicated her time to running Will’s 40+ hours a week Lovaas program and advocating on Will’s behalf. She and Bruce sued their local school district and regional center for funding for Will’s program and prevailed. Soon, she and Bruce were successfully advocating for services for other autistic children in the area. In 1997, ’s second child, Katrina, was diagnosed with autism and co-founded the first support group in the area specifically targeted at newly-diagnosed parents. She serves on the Board of the Autism Society of America-Greater Long Beach South Bay Chapter and has previously edited their newsletter and served as the Corresponding Secretary. She was one of the founding parents of L.A.-F.EA.T. and was a frequent contributor to the old FEATLIST. In 2000, she returned to work full-time and opened the California office of Waters & Kraus. One of her first assignments was to research the issue of thimerosal in vaccines and its link to mercury poisoning and autism. Waters & Kraus filed the first civil suit in the United States alleging that thimerosal had caused neurological damage to children later diagnosed with autism. In the meantime, Bruce Bothwell left his partners in a general civil practice and opened his own office. He now practices exclusively in special education law. and Bruce have made it their mission to do as much as they personally can to address the needs of individuals with autism in their community and beyond. IN THE NEWS Vaccines the subject of new Congressional investigationBy Jon Brodkin/ Daily News StaffFriday, March 17, 2006 Congress has asked for a new investigation into a potential link between mercury-containing vaccines and autism, as some lawmakers claim the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has inadequately researched the topic."If the federal government is going to have a study whose results will be broadly accepted, such a study cannot be led by the CDC," Sen. ph Lieberman, D-Conn., and seven other members of Congress wrote in a letter to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS).A budget appropriation approved by Congress urges the NIEHS to examine the Vaccine Safety Datalink, a CDC database that follows 7 million immunized children from 1990 to the present. Some lawmakers believe a new review of this database may show a link between autism and thimerosal -- a vaccine preservative containing mercury.A local parent who said he believes his two autistic children were harmed by vaccines applauded Congress for requesting a new investigation. The parent, Hansen of Framingham, said he thinks the CDC is reluctant to expose dangers of thimerosal because the agency is responsible for ensuring public acceptance of its vaccination program."They've proven far more willing to overstate the risks of disease and understate the danger of vaccination," Hansen said. "No one in their right mind can say that giving mercury intravenously is a smart thing to do."Autism rates soared during the 1990s when thimerosal was most heavily used in childhood vaccines. Levels of mercury injected into infants were 120 times greater than federal safety limits for oral ingestion of mercury, congressmen wrote to the NIEHS.Government officials asked manufacturers in 1999 to remove the mercury-based preservative from vaccines, but it is still used in flu and tetanus shots.CDC's research on the Vaccine Safety Datalink is flawed, Lieberman and his colleagues wrote, because it "was based on data collected prior to the removal of thimerosal and failed to explicitly compare the outcome of children who received thimerosal-containing vaccines with those who did not."The CDC refused to comment on the criticism of its research. But Dr. Marie McCormick, a Harvard professor who chaired an Institute of Medicine committee in 2004, said the group ran several analyses of the CDC data and found no link between thimerosal and autism."Nothing you could do changed the results," McCormick said. "The results of the...study have been replicated in England. They found no association between thimerosal and other neurodevelopmental disorders."In the letter to NIEHS, members of Congress criticized the IOM for relying heavily on European data, even though American children were exposed to mercury at levels 75 percent greater than in Europe. The letter was not signed by any Massachusetts congressmen. But U.S. Rep. Meehan, D-5th, said he agrees with its content and would have signed on had he been aware it was being written."Mercury is known as a brain poison and in the 1990s a greater number of children were being exposed to mercury (in vaccines)," Meehan said. "I think this is a serious public health concern and we need more research."A spokeswoman for the NIEHS could not be reached for comment.(Jon Brodkin can be reached at 508-626-4424 or jbrodkin@....) IN THE NEWS Vaccines the subject of new Congressional investigationBy Jon Brodkin/ Daily News StaffFriday, March 17, 2006 Congress has asked for a new investigation into a potential link between mercury-containing vaccines and autism, as some lawmakers claim the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has inadequately researched the topic."If the federal government is going to have a study whose results will be broadly accepted, such a study cannot be led by the CDC," Sen. ph Lieberman, D-Conn., and seven other members of Congress wrote in a letter to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS).A budget appropriation approved by Congress urges the NIEHS to examine the Vaccine Safety Datalink, a CDC database that follows 7 million immunized children from 1990 to the present. "I think this is a serious public health concern and we need more research."A spokeswoman for the NIEHS could not be reached for comment.(Jon Brodkin can be reached at 508-626-4424 or jbrodkin@....) Congress Speaks Out on ThimerosalLandmark Leiberman Letter A letter made public this week from eight members of the House and Senate to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) is making headlines, and with good reason. The new findings replicate the initial findings of Dr. Wakefield. Dr. , of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, studied children with regressive autism and bowel disease. "Of the handful of results we have in so far, all are vaccine strain," he said of the type of measles present in the intestines of 87% of the autistic children studied. The study’s conclusions are welcomed by many parents. “Gut anomalies are very real in our children,” says Ann Brasher of the National Autism Association. “We’re thankful that Dr. has replicated Dr. Wakefield’s research and are hopeful these new findings will lead to more effective treatments, and broadened awareness.”Families and friends across the globe helped The National Autism Association and other organizations fund portions of the study. “Research like this is so desperately needed,” says Bothwell of the National Autism Association. “The more we know about what’s happened to our children, the better equipped we are to help them.” FEATURED PRODUCT FDA T-ShirtMercury PoisoningKid TestedFDA Approved Get Yours Today!Only $15.00 in NAA's Little Shop of Hope! http://www.nationalautismassociation.org/proddetail.php?prod=FDAApproved Visit our website for product details or to place your order. Guest guest
Dear " thefitzenreiterfamily, " The FDA's definition of " trace amounts " as it applies to Thimerosal-containing biological products, including vaccines, is contained in the following quote taken from the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) webpage: http://www.fda.gov/cber/vaccine/thimerosal.htm After converting the mathematical symbol used and striking the superfluous " than " between " 1 " and " micrograms " and inserting the word " of " between the words " micrograms " and " mercury, " the corrected text reads, with my changes indicated by bracketed [ ] text: >... >At present, all routinely recommended >vaccines for U.S. infants are available >only as thimerosal-free formulations or >contain only trace amounts of thimerosal >( " not more than " [NMT]) 1 micrograms [of] >mercury per dose), with the exception of >inactivated influenza vaccine. > Based on this definition and the level (weight %) of mercury in Thimerosal, the following apply: For a Maximum % [ppm] Nominal Vaccine Dose Thimerosal allowed Mercury level Of " n " in the vaccine is in micrograms mL Not More Than (NMT) per mL (NMT) _____ _________________ _____________ 0.25 0.0008% [8 ppm] 4 micrograms 0.5 0.0004% [4 ppm] 2 micrograms 1.0 0.0002% [2 ppm] 1 microgram The preceding is the case because Thimerosal is 49.55% (about 50%) mercury by weight. Leeann Whiffen was just 23 years old when her son Clay was born. She and her husband, , were like most Americans, struggling with a modest budget to provide for their kids and build a healthy middle-class family life. It all changed when Clay began to slip away. After several months and several misdiagnoses, Clay grew more withdrawn and unresponsive. Then at two years old, he was diagnosed with Autism, and the Whiffen family’s world was turned upside down.In a frantic struggle, the Whiffens tried every treatment they could afford, and many that they couldn’t, trying to find a cure for the condition that reportedly has no cure. They’d mortgaged their lives and savings on treatments they weren’t even sure could help. But today, Clay Whiffen is eight years old and medically certified as completely off the Autism spectrum. He’s doing well in school and his teachers are unaware he ever had the condition. His story is a source of inspiration and hope for everyone.
