Guest guest
My son was on risperdal for about 2 yrs, and one drawback we saw was the weight gain. He gained around 50 lbs. A place to find out other parents experience with meds is here: http://login.prospero.com/dir-login/index.asp?webtag=AspergerOasis & lgnDST=http%3A%2F%2Fforums.delphiforums.com%2FAspergerOasis%2Fstart paula -------Original Message------- From: Saksa Date: 1/20/2009 11:23:40 AM Autism-Biomed-Ohio Cc: Subject: [ ] Any experiences with Risperdol? My 7 yr. old son (ASD), has had biomedical intervention since his diagnosis at 20 mos. I am not going to list all of the diets, treatments, therapies he has used. In a nutshell he is pretty much on an organic diet with no casein and limited gluten. He gets a viamin compound, OLE, Probiotic, and digestive enzymes (as needed). We have gone the bio medical route a long time. We recently got to the breaking point and went to medications ( Oppositional and Obsessive behaviors were out of control). Going the ADD/ADHD avenue first, we tried 2 medications from those familiy of drugs with no luck. I researched Risperdol, and asked our doctor about it. He agreed to a prescription. Almost immediately we saw a difference. We have witnessed amazing changes in our son with no side effects. We have not witnessed such an impact on his behavior and development since his MORE THAN WORDS class when he was 2 1/2. It was like a switch was flipped. His Oppositional behaviors have almost been eliminated. When they do appear, there is not the usual hostility and edge that normally accompanies them. He has fostered an improved relationship with his sister, teachers, and tutors. I am a glass half empty guy, so I am waiting and planning for the bottom to fall out. So I am looking for information. I am still leary about meds. It took a lot for us to even discuss medications, let alone try them. I would like to know of anyone who has had any experience with Risperdol. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Guest guest
We statrted our son on respridol as well we have treated our son with all viatamins supplements. But his aggression was getting terrible the dr explained it to us as because she knew how much we did not want medication so she put him on the lowest dose and she told us and several parents that this is temorary fix most parents that I talked to while I was researching before we started him on it was ithat it lasts about two yrs but what our Dr had said while he is doing well get him to learn how to act when he gets upset. To me and my sons teachers his mind seems a little clearer when he goes to hit you can easily redirect him he is learning better at school. His teacher says its like a cloud has been lifted. I am hoping when he comes off of it that we have done a good enough job for him. We also have had no side effects at all so it has deffinently made this experience a lot easier hope this helps you in some way. Guest guest
My son was on Risperdol for about 2 years... when we first got the diagnosis the prescription for the Risperdol came with the information packet his pediatric neurologist gave us... at the time we were looking for something to help keep him calm and to let him and us get more than 45 minutes of sleep at a time.. we were brand new to everything and had never even heard the words biomedical or supplements... It was amazing what a difference.. after a few days he slept 6 hours straight through.. and he was able to focus to listen better in school and at home so he got more out of the work we were doing with him... The biggest side effect was he doubled his body weight in 9 months.. he went from a 32lb almost 3 year old.. to a 65 pound 3 year old.. as a result he now has asthma because his lungs didn't grow as fast as his body did.. we also took him every 6 months for blood work/ liver function testing because they say that Risperdol can cause liver damage.. that was never the case with us.. We weaned him off of the Risperdol about 2 years ago.. he went an entire year without meds (and lost 20lbs!!) before the sleeplessness started all over again but he retained all cognitive progress that was made.. he has now been on Abilify for a little over a year which has helped improve his cognitive function even more and we are able to get more sleep.. without as much weight gain... So good luck to you... and just keep an eye on him.. you may not notice behavior side effects.. but it's the physical ones that you have to look out for! Guest guest
A poster gave a web address or group(?) that discusses meds? the link did not work for me, can someone lead me to the right link? We have been working with a naturepath, and have seen quite an improvement (was getting scary for awhile there) but still want to do research into meds, as we think that we might need those in addition to the therapy we are now doing. Our son is 13 and has never been on meds, but have seen a increase in behaviors (with puberty maybe?)over the last year. Sometimes it is hard to distinguish between what is rigidity and him being obsessive and/or anxiety... <sigh> Best to you! Guest guest
Thanks to all that replied, We have not noticed any cognitive differences with our son. On the riperdal, we have just seen the behavior and temperment improvements. It's not so much a change, as it is allowing his true nature to come through. It has been so peaceful and fun...(wow did I say fun?), this past month. I told my wife it was the first Holiday season, since his very first one, that hasn't been miserable. It was nice to look forward to Christmas morning for a change. I hope he is making some new brain connections that will stick with him while he is in this better place. It is too early to tell about the weight gain. I haven't noticed anything yet, but he is also on a pretty low dose. I am keeping a close watch for ticks and spasms. Besides the first day, I haven't noticed any drowsiness. Day one he was out at 7:30 (usually an 8:30 bedtime... sleeping by 9:00). Since then I have not seen any fatigue or sleepiness He has been healthier this season as well. I believe the Olive leaf extract, the antioxidants ( a lot of berries) , increased water, less juice, vitamin compounds and sambucal have kept him a lot healthier this winter. Thanks again to everyone who gave me some insight through their experiences. From: a <pcmiller25@...>Subject: Re: [ ] Any experiences with Risperdol?
